Queen of Villains - Chapter 43

In fact, Pete Donahue and Mayo Donahue are brothers.

Born into a wealthy merchant family, Pete dreamed of becoming a lawyer and Mayo a doctor, but their family was torn apart when their parents fell victim to a business scam.

To escape poverty, the brothers took any lucrative job they could find. Starting out as gangsters, their cleverness quickly led them to become regular members of the mafia.

However, since the two people had such different personalities that they fought over every little thing, it had been two years since they last saw each other.

Pete is now the consigliere, and Mayo is the chef at Starr.

Mayo admitted that Pete was a smart guy, but the more he thought about how he had already become the number three in the organization, the more disgusted he became.

“You don’t have any accidents these days, do you?”

Mayo's face turned red at Pete's words.

“What did I do to deserve this?”

Mayo, who had been shouting until then, had no choice but to keep his mouth shut because of Killian, who was watching the two with a fire in his eyes.

'You must be absolutely quiet in front of Madam!'

That was the newly emerged Starr's law.

Living, living, and having to prepare dinner for that damn thing... Mayo swallowed a sigh and went back into the kitchen.

“That’s interesting. I didn’t know you two were brothers.”

Pete's reaction was that it was natural for Emily to think that way.

"I've heard stories like this a lot since I was little. I hate to say it myself, but I'm on the thin side, and my younger brother is a bit rounder."

Emily, who was at a loss for words as to how to respond, simply smiled quietly.

Killian spoke about Pete's background from the side.

"Pete is a friend who helped me with many businesses, not just Delina. Later, when we went to Sinope together... Was his name Tom?"

“It’s Toto.”

“Yes, he will help him too.”

Killian said, nodding towards Pete.

“That guy isn’t a lawyer, but he’s prepared for the exam and has a lot of knowledge about the law.”

Pete opened his mouth in a regretful tone.

“If I had the time, I would have gotten my lawyer’s license by now, but I’m so busy.”

Emily thanked Pete, listening to his words, which she couldn't tell if they were true or not.

“I know you’re busy, but thank you for coming with me.”

“It’s nothing special.”

The more Pete talked to Emily, the more he liked her. Unlike other high-minded nobles, she wasn't arrogant at all, nor was she stingy with greetings.

He was envious of the fortune the boss had to have such a beautiful and kind wife.

Perhaps, if his family hadn't fallen into ruin, he would have met a good wife and been living happily ever after. A thought crossed his mind.

'Sigh, let's stop with this pointless thinking.'

Pete shook his head and ate the food Mayo had halfheartedly served him. Compared to what Killian and Emily had eaten, his was definitely a mess.

"Well, as long as it tastes good, that's all that matters." Pete shrugged and stuffed the food into his mouth. In truth, Pete was a simple man.

“I heard that you, Madam, have also studied business a bit.”

“Huh? Who said that...?”

Emily, who was flustered, soon realized who the culprit was and glanced at Killian.

Killian was also taken aback by Pete's unexpected remark.

He just wanted to brag about his wife studying.

At Killian's cold gaze, Pete gave an innocent expression as if to say, "Why are you like that?"

Emily sighed softly and had no choice but to open her mouth.

“Ahem, I just read a few related books at the library.”

“After reading it, did it give you a feel for business?”

Emily blushed in embarrassment at Pete's question.

“I haven’t read it deeply yet.”

“Haha, it’s not that difficult.”

Pete continued, moistening his throat with wine.

"The most important thing in business is 'connections.' But you don't have to worry, Madam. You know me."

Mayo, who was just bringing the main dish, frowned at Pete's self-praise.

The reason the two of them kept fighting over every little thing was because of that braggart. It was truly disgusting to see him being so brazen in a place like this.

“Do you know many people in the bakery industry?”

Emily asked with sparkling eyes.

"I have a wide network of contacts, so I know all the famous pastry chefs in Bansent. I'm also the one who introduced Master to the famous pastry chef at Financier."

Emily tilted her head at those words.

“Is there a particular reason why you introduced me to a patissier famous for his financiers in Starr?”

“Doesn’t Madam like the financier the best?”

Emily's eyes widened in surprise.

“How did you know I liked that?”

Killian, who had been fidgeting and listening to the two people's conversation, interrupted.

“When the proposals were exchanged, I received a document containing my wife’s tastes.”

"Oh my goodness, my nanny must have written that. I'm so embarrassed to send something like that."

Killian stared at Pete with a menacing gaze. Judging by Pete's relaxed expression, it was clear he'd brought up the subject on purpose.

Anyway, Emily, who believed his excuse, understood why Starr's interior and food suited her taste.

“Thank you for looking at the content and preparing various things to my taste.”

"No."

Killian smiled inwardly in relief. He'd almost been mistaken for a stalker, but Emily was satisfied, so the effort he'd put into preparing hadn't been in vain.

After they'd finished most of the main course, dessert arrived. Pete asked, poking the pudding around with his spoon.

“You said that what Mr. Toto was making was carrot cake?”

“Yes, that’s right. Do you like carrot cake?”

"I know this might be rude, but I'm not really a big fan of desserts. Sometimes, when I need a sweet boost, I just add sugar to my black tea."

"Yes."

It was a bit disappointing that they couldn't have a lively conversation while eating Toto's cake.

After the meal and tea time, time passed by well past 9 o'clock.

“I think I should go now.”

As Pete stood up, Cezanne glanced at her watch with a wistful expression. She stopped pouring tea and quickly brought Pete's coat.

“Because I stayed up late, you couldn’t get out of work either.”

Cezanne shook his head sharply at Pete's affectionate words.

“It wasn’t that difficult.”

"Yes?"

Pete patted her shoulder as if he was grateful, and then he gathered his coat and got up from his seat as Killian and Emily did the same.

“Please be careful on your way back.”

“Yes, then I will go. I hope you and Killian have a good night.”

“I have more to say to this friend, so I’ll see him off.”

At Killian's words, Pete's shoulders stiffened as if he were nervous.

It seemed like he was going to take revenge for what happened during dinner.

Time passed, and before they knew it, it was time to head to Sinope.

The morning wasn't too hectic because the carriage was already loaded.

“Cezanne, you look so pretty today.”

Cezanne was wearing a romantic pink evening dress with a rose print and a wide-brimmed hat.

She kept pulling her hat up towards her face, as if she felt awkward about being complimented on her beauty.

“Hello, Ma’am.”

Pete had also arrived, as they had all decided to depart together from Starr.

"Hello."

“You look in good condition today.”

“Is that so?”

Emily smiled and looked back. Cezanne seemed to be waiting for the right moment to greet Pete.

“I’ll go see my husband. You two say hello.”

First, Emily gave up her seat for Cezanne, but when she actually tried to go to Killian, she couldn't move her feet properly.

Killian gave instructions to Giovanni and Alvin and then stood far away alone.

Emily's gaze was fixed on Killian for a while, her eyes glued to his, as if she were entranced.

He was running one hand over his black hair, which was blowing in and out of the wind, as if it were bothersome.

His slim and well-toned body, devoid of any fat, looked incredibly good in a suit made of the finest materials.

No matter how long they spent together, Killian's appearance never seemed to become familiar.

At that moment, Killian turned his head, and their gazes met. Emily, who missed the timing to turn her head, stared at Killian for a moment.

Soon, Killian walked towards Emily.

“Are you ready?”

"Yes."

Emily tried not to show her embarrassment and answered calmly.

“We’ll be riding in a carriage for quite some time. Won’t the clothes be uncomfortable?”

At Killian's words, Emily checked her outfit. It was a comfortable, daytime dress, the only decoration being a yellow ribbon on the chest.

But in Killian's eyes, the design that tightened around the waist seemed quite uncomfortable.

“It’s only a two or three-hour ride.”

"But..."

Killian arched an eyebrow, still dissatisfied.

“Killian! We’re about to depart. Is that alright?”

Ivan came between them and asked.

“Yes, everything is ready, so let’s go.”

Emily also urged Killian. He wanted her to wear more comfortable clothes and ride in the carriage, but Ivan, oblivious to Killian's intentions, was completely oblivious.

Killian had no choice but to escort Emily and get into the carriage.

As soon as Emily got into the carriage, she looked out the window to see where Cezanne and Pete were.

The two had been chatting for a while, but were now parting ways to board their own carriages. Emily looked at them, and a hint of satisfaction crossed her face.

But Killian, who had been following Emily's gaze, hardened his face when he saw Emily looking at Pete.

Pete had a gentle and affectionate demeanor, and compared to most of the Starr family members, who were old-fashioned, he had been in many relationships.

'Is my wife's taste in Pete?'

Killian felt depressed as he looked at his perfect face reflected in the window.

This is because he sometimes remembers what Knox said about how women don't like it when a man is too handsome to be burdensome.
