Queen of Villains - Chapter 42

The Starr family also has a consigliere.

A consigliere is a family member who serves as an advisor to the organization on matters of concern. This means that anyone in this position must be intelligent and respectable.

“But why is someone like you our consigliere?”

Knox, who was drinking with Pete at the Delina House, asked him with a questioning look in his eyes.

“I’m really speechless.”

He leaned back against the back of the chair, arrogantly crossing his legs.

“You think I’m funny because I hang out with you and Chambers, but you’re making a big mistake.”

His name is Pete Donahue.

Compared to the typical consigliere, who was well into middle age, he was relatively young at only 32. This was partly due to the Starr family's short history.

Pete was average in appearance, but he was tall and had charming dimples when he smiled. He was also very polite to women, making him very popular compared to the blunt members of the organization.

Although Knox seemed like a slacker who did nothing but do nothing, it was impossible to ignore the fact that he had a good business sense and a brilliant mind, which contributed greatly to the growth of Delina House.

“By the way, have you met the madam?”

"I only saw her briefly at the wedding. Even then, the boss must have been really tight-lipped."

Pete, who had been clicking his tongue, sat up again and asked.

“Do you see Madam often?”

“Of course. Do you know how close we are?”

Pete frowned at Knox's answer, which was a bit sullen.

“I’ve said it many times, but just because you exchange a few words doesn’t mean you become friends.”

"Ignoring people is a waste of time. Ask Madam! How close are we?"

"Well, that's fine. Where's Giovanni? I have something to tell him while Boss and I go to the Sinope estate."

Killian wasn't unfamiliar with business, but he decided to take Pete with him to get the job done more quickly. And Pete, curious about the kind of person Madame was, readily accepted the offer.

“Giovanni isn’t in Delina, so tell me. I’ll relay the message.”

“To you?”

Pete patted his shoulder and laughed as if he had heard a funny story.

“What is it? It’s annoying.”

Knox shook his hand and shook his shoulder.

“Arthur. You can’t even remember properly after just two sentences. What are you talking about?”

“Huh! Let me test it out! See if I can memorize it or not.”

“I said I don’t have time to play with you like this.”

“What’s wrong?”

Pete quickly headed to the Starr Family headquarters, leaving behind the furious Knox. It seemed faster to find Giovanni himself than to ask him.

Meanwhile, Emily was excited about going to the Sinope estate for the first time in a long time.

She missed the nanny and the butler who diligently managed the mansion on her behalf, and she also missed Grandma Juliet, Toto, and the other people of the estate.

And that wasn't all. The valley overflowing with wild strawberries, the fountain where children played until sunset, the view of Sinope from the hill—there was not a single place she didn't miss.

After she finished packing all the gifts to give to her hometown people, her luggage was already full.

“Madam, is this the end of your burden?”

Ivan, who had already climbed up and down the stairs several times, asked while catching his breath.

“Yeah, was it hard with all that luggage?”

“Haha, no. How could a man of my caliber have such a hard time with something like this?”

Ivan pretended not to notice and wiped the sweat from his chin as he spoke.

“Ivan.”

Roxy tapped his shoulder with an indifferent expression.

"Why?"

“I have to go down now anyway, so I’ll take it with me.”

"Yes. It's so heavy. You can't lift it."

"Well?"

Roxy nonchalantly snatched the bag Ivan was carrying with one hand and slung it over her shoulder.

“Is the carriage in front?”

“Uh, huh? Yeah....”

Ivan watched blankly as Roxy walked away nonchalantly.

“Madam... If there’s anything else I need you to do, please call me.”

“Yes.”

As soon as Ivan left the room, saying a weak greeting, someone knocked on the door again and came in.

"Madam!"

Alvin, who came inside with a bright smile, was a stark contrast to Ivan's appearance just before.

“You look happy.”

“Isn’t this the first trip you two have taken together?”

“It seems more like business than travel.”

Alvin continued his thoughts, ignoring Emily's words.

“Of course, it’s a bit hot for a trip, but isn’t that what makes a vacation special?”

“A vacation is going from a hot place to a cool place, but isn’t Sinope hotter than here?”

"Ah!"

Alvin quickly cut Emily off and said.

"Because we're going to the place where Madam grew up. This trip will likely hold great significance for Master, too."

For some reason, Emily felt like she had to agree with him.

“My heart is full just imagining the two of you walking along the path of your hometown.”

“Aren’t you going with me this time?”

Alvin said with a sullen face, as if he was sorry that he couldn't see that scene.

“I can’t go because I have to guard this place, but instead, the next smartest person after me will assist you and Master.”

“Who is it? Is it someone I know?”

When Emily asked thoughtfully, Alvin immediately shook his head.

“Probably not yet met.”

“I think it would be less awkward if we said hello before we go. Should I invite him to dinner?”

“That's a good idea! I'll tell Master about it soon.”

“I would appreciate it if you could do that.”

“Don’t worry.”

Alvin hummed a tune and left the room with light steps. Only after confirming he was completely gone did Cezanne sneak up to Emily.

“Madam, are you taking a maid with you on this trip to assist you?”

For some reason, Cezanne's cheeks were flushed red as she asked that question.

“I haven’t thought about it yet....”

Emily asked, as if she were floating.

“Cezanne, would you like to come with me?”

“Yes? Really?”

Cezanne's voice even trembled slightly. Emily was amazed by her reaction, seeing it for the first time.

“You wanted to go to Sinope that much?”

"Yes?"

Cezanne, who had been asking what that meant, quickly nodded again.

“Yes, yes! That’s right.”

"This is a big deal. This is the first time anyone around me has said they want to go to Sinope."

Emily, who had unknowingly made a remark dismissive of Sinope, added an explanation.

“Of course, Sinope is a very, very beautiful place, but not many people know about its charm.”

“I see... No, that’s not it! Of course, I’m one of those who recognize its charm.”

"Really? Then, Cezanne, pack your bags slowly too. I'll definitely take you with me."

Cezanne's face brightened at Emily's words.

"Ah..."

Cezanne, who had been hesitating and watching Emily's expression, opened his mouth with difficulty.

“I heard you were talking to Alvin earlier. It seems like you have guests coming over tonight. Can I bring the tea then?”

“Yes? Okay, then.”

“Thank you! I’ll make sure to make it delicious.”

'Today is really not like Cezanne.'

Emily looked at the active Cezanne with a strange look, her face shy.

And that evening, Killian, who had received a call from Alvin, was on his way to the mansion with Pete.

“Don’t say anything about being a consigliere or anything like that in front of your Ma’am.”

“Why don’t you just hide the fact that I’m a mafia member?”

“That’s what I meant.”

“Oh my god.”

Pete glanced at Killian incredulously.

"Why on earth are you so embarrassed in front of Madam? Is she ignoring us, the great noble Lady, because we're part of the mafia?"

“That’s not it.”

“If not that, then what?”

Killian hesitated for a moment, then opened his mouth.

“Madam might be scared.”

“I’m such an eyesore.”

Pete ran his arm down his arm as if he was creeped out.

“What kind of person is she who makes the boss so cringe-worthy?”

“Be quiet. If you open your mouth carelessly there, I won’t let you off easy, so just know that.”

“Yes, yes, I’m going to go after eating.”

As Pete listened to Killian's threats, the carriage had already arrived at the Starr mansion.

When he actually stood in front of the mansion, he felt nervous for no reason.

“Welcome.”

Emily, who came out to greet them, was wearing an elegant beige-gold dress. With her neatly styled hair and dignified figure, she was the epitome of a noblewoman.

“Thank you for inviting me to dinner. My name is Pete Donahue.”

Pete greeted Emily with the politeness and deference expected of a gentleman. Soon, Cezanne appeared behind Emily.

“Hello, Mr. Donahue. I’ll take care of your coat.”

“Cezanne, it’s been a while. How have you been?”

Cezanne answered shyly, avoiding eye contact.

“Yes. How have you been, Mr. Donahue?”

“I’ve been doing well.”

Emily observed the two with interest. She felt she understood why Cezanne had wanted to join her on this trip.

“But is Mr. Donahue a mafia member too?”

At Emily's question, Killian and Pete's footsteps stopped at the same time as they headed to the restaurant.

“Um-what does that mean, Ma’am?”

First of all, since there was a conversation he had with Killian, Pete tried to pretend not to know.

“It seems like you’ve known Cezanne for a long time, and the cufflinks with the wolf seal on them are also there.”

'I didn't think of that.'

Pete fiddled with his cufflinks. He felt Killian's warm gaze from beside him.

“Oh! And at the wedding, I think I saw you among the Black Legion.”

Since it was no longer meaningful to pretend, Pete decided to just admit it.

“You have a keen eye for observation, Madam.”

“I was just saying what I saw.”

Anyway, Emily didn't seem to care much about Pete being a mafia member.

Pete and Killian, both feeling relieved, walked back into the restaurant.

As everyone took their seats, Mayo came out to explain the course menu, and Pete raised his hand to greet Mayo.

"Hi!"

Pete seemed delighted to see him smiling, his cheeks slightly dimpling. On the other hand, Mayo's expression upon discovering Pete was rotten.

“Why is that human here...”
