IHMEB - Chapter 222 < The Flipped Table >

“They’re going to send Princess Irena to the capital as a potential Queen right away.”

“Isn’t the Duke of Vermont smart?”

Asked Makie, looking surprised.

“I thought he'd somehow break the promise of a national marriage and get out of the war.”

“That old fox’s mind is so clever.”

Originally, the most important destiny given to the head of a family was to give birth to a male child and continue the family line in good health.

The Duke of Vermont had only one child, Irena.

Given the family’s tradition of putting a child who didn’t have a bright future on the market under the name of Vermont and solidifying the marriage line, it was likely the Duchess’ fault.

“I don’t know why she didn’t think about having a child with a government official or a second wife.”

“He might have thought that since her daughter, Princess Irena, has a symbolic color, she would be more advantageous in giving birth to a successor.”

Most nobles were obsessed with passing down their family line.

After marrying Irena as the Queen of the kingdom, Valmonde would have no next heir, so it was naturally planned to be reborn as one with the Kingdom of Oberon.

However, if there was an heir in the bloodline of Vermont?

It would be a different story.

“So that baby is the one who turns the tables like this.”

“That’s right.”

Valquiterre, who had been calm the whole time, glared at Count Makie with coldness.

“When I thought you made a mistake, I thought I wouldn’t forgive you.”

Count Makie quickly lowered his head in the sharp cold.

“I’m sorry, Your Majesty.”

The existence of a child is like a bridge that connects parents.

If it were discovered later that the baby was alive, it would obviously cause enormous trouble.

Lying to Claudel about the baby’s death and plotting with Kaian about the succession to the Duke of Temnes were both problems.

So Valquiterre told Count Makie to handle it properly.

Nevertheless, he didn't take the baby's life with his own hands because he had a slight uneasiness about it being Kaian's child.

That's why Valquiterre forgave the mistake of Count Makie.

The most certain way was to avoid it himself. It was also unexpected that Madame Repel would betray him, which was not enough to blame Count Makie for handling things superficially.

'Even the nanny is on that guy's side.'

When Valquiterre was young, it was Madame Repel who held and protected him in place of the cold-hearted Queen Sylvia in the palace.

No matter what he did, she was the nanny who just comforted him and said he did well.

When Valquiterre heard the report that she had rescued the baby and followed Kaian to Rowen, Valquiterre doubted his own eyes.

After that, anger eventually followed.

'I couldn't even take what that bastard had. That bastard Kaian is taking what's mine too.'

Valquiterre, who was consumed by the feeling that he could never forgive, was steadily preparing to attack Rowen.

“Anyway, if you tell him that the boy in the red-haired man is alive, the Duke of Vermont will want war more than anyone else.”

“That’s right.”

“I bet he can’t even sleep right now because he wants to take that child.”

The boy in the red-haired man that he had always wanted but couldn’t give birth to.

The Duke of Vermont would have to attack Temnes just to take that child. The formidable Kaien wouldn’t just say, “Okay, take it,” and give the child away just because he’s crazy.

“That baby will tie the two of you together as parents.”

So if he dangerously threatens the baby, their relationship will inevitably be shaken.

If the Duke of Vermont takes the baby to Valmonde, Claudel might just run away from Rowen Castle and return to Valmonde.

At least, the obsession he had seen with Claudel’s baby was enough to make him do that.

“If he thought I would back down like this, he was mistaken.”

Valquiterre was planning to reclaim all the glory that should have been his.

Rowen Castle, the territory, and Claudel.

Irena was going to hold the Duke of Vermont hostage so he couldn’t move, and Claudel was going to be Kaian’s shackles.

‘I didn’t know he cared about Claudel that much.’

Kaian had changed.

He wasn’t that kind of person originally.

He was a greedy, cold-blooded person, just like Valquiterre. He had changed after meeting that woman, Claudel.

Valquiterre couldn’t even forgive that and felt betrayed.

“When will the mercenary group come from the Sol Continent?”

He asked, and Makie quickly answered.

“They said it would take at least two or three months, but they contacted me again saying it would take about a month.”

“You’re impatient.”

A sneer spread across Valquiterre's cold face.

“I don’t know. Haven’t you heard it drilled into your ears that if a child isn’t blond and blue-eyed, they should be thrown out?”

“...”

Valquiterre waved his hand when Count Makie couldn’t readily agree and kept his mouth shut.

“Ah. I don’t mean to say anything to you.”

It was none other than Count Makie who abandoned the baby born into the royal family while assisting Sylvia during the previous Queen’s era.

“Isn’t it because of your efforts that I was able to ascend to the throne safely? Isn’t that so?”

“Your Majesty. That’s what I mean.”

Valquiterre smiled brightly when Count Makie seemed uncomfortable and couldn’t answer.

“We’ll have to start the war after the harvest season.”

“We’ll be fully prepared to march by then.”

“Yes.”

Valquiterre said forcefully.

“By late fall.”

He planned to make the warehouse full of grain and Rowen his own.

Ta-aang.

At that moment, the office door opened without warning.

The bewildered royal attendants outside quickly lowered their heads as soon as their eyes met Valquiterre.

“Are you really going to war with Kaian?”

Bianque’s eyes were red, perhaps because she had not been able to control her emotions well and had been crying.

“Why on earth? For what? If you’re going to go to war, there has to be a reason?”

“Princess Bianque.”

“Ah! Stop calling me Princess!”

Bianque’s blue eyes slowly turned dark blue as anger seeped into them.

“Did you think I would be scared and tremble at the mention of Princess? You really make fun of me!”

“I make fun of you?”

“No? You acted like you would listen to me so many times, what? You said you hated me?”

She recalled the conversation from before as if she was shocked, and she snickered.

“So? Rowen is where the Kingdom of Oberon originally began. The Duke of Temnes took what was mine and ran away, so that’s not a reason to go to war?”

“Stop being ridiculous. Do you want to see the entire kingdom pointing fingers at you and calling you a retard?”

“Who would say that in front of me?”

“No. But I’m sure everyone thinks that way inside?”

Valquiterre gave the order to Count Makie as if she was fed up.

“Take her out.”

“Brother! Brother, wait a minute!”

Bianque, who had been acting arrogantly like a lioness with her hair raised in the face of the slaughter, suddenly lost her temper.

“Change your mind now. Ues?”

She walked up to Valquiterre, knelt down, and clung to his arm.

“What am I going to do if we go to war? Marrying Kaian will be completely out of the question.”

“Don’t you have any pride?”

“Pride?”

“Kaian loves Claudel.”

Valquiterre asked seriously.

“Do you really want a man who has another woman in his heart?”

“What is that?”

Bianque frowned.

“I can’t even dream of a loving marriage anyway.”

“Then it doesn’t matter to anyone.”

“Why doesn’t it matter? What do you want me to do with all these old grooms who look like they going to puke just by looking at them!”

Bianque jumped up again and stamped her feet.

“Stop the war! Just let me get married!”

“Makie. Take her out.”

“Ah! Valquiterre!”

Bianque, who had been shouting in protest, stopped as soon as she was thrown out into the hallway.

“Are you okay, Your Highness?”

Bianque glared at Count Makie as he quickly let go of her arm and lowered his head.

“What are you doing to make things like this?”

“It’s His Majesty’s will.”

“War with Rowen. Who among the people of Oberon would take that fact for granted?”

Bianque was getting emotional and was about to cry.

“Anyone would think the King is out of his mind.”

Nevertheless, it was crazy to be forced to marry Rowen because he was doing something reasonable, desirable, and justifiable.

"When His Majesty comes to his senses, tell him clearly.”

Bianque taunted, daring to talk about the King’s mental health.

“Find me a groom as handsome and successful as Kaian. If not, I won’t stay still.”

Looking at Bianque, Count Makie’s face darkened.

The Oberon royal bloodline was greedy, selfish, and sometimes cruel.

It was rare for it to show its negative side while sitting on the throne, but this time it was a total mess.

God.

Count Makie sighed as he watched Bianque disappear with a thud.

***

A place was finally set up in the backyard of Rowen Castle.

For a long time, Hannah, Rohan, Madame Cronach, Madame Repel, and even the nanny enjoyed a picnic by the lakeside, and when the baby fell asleep pleasantly in the gentle breeze, everyone left. A baby basket with curved legs like a rocking chair was placed next to the wide-spread rug.

“You must be tired. Let’s lie down and rest.”

Kaian, who was leaning his back against the tree next to him, pulled Claudel over and laid her down so that she could rest her legs. He stroked the red hair that was tangled over her legs with his fingertips.

“It’s uncomfortable,”

“Uncomfortable?”

“It’s too high, my neck hurts.”

Claudel said in a loud voice,

“And it’s hard.”

When she tried to get up, Kaian pressed his hand against her head as if to interfere.

“Isn’t that the leg you like when you get on?”

“What are you saying?”

Claudel pretended not to hear, so Kaian took his hand away and helped her sit up.

“I spent a long time trying to make my hair look nice. It’s all ruined.”

When she grumbled, Kaian reached out and tugged at the ribbon that held her hair up.

Snap.

The ribbon came loose, causing her red hair to fall apart, and Claudel looked at him with a bewildered expression.

“If it’s going to get ruined anyway, I’ll help you.”
