“Noah Rotsilt! Diana, my daughter!”
A muffled scream was heard from afar. The Queen, pale, almost blue, stood there, watching Noah. She staggered toward Diana, who lay covered in blood and covered in Noah's military overcoat. Behind her stood fully armed soldiers and guards.
Baroness Mason, who was standing there, opened her eyes wide, unable to hide her bewildered expression.
“What happened?”
“She's not dead.”
Noah slowly rose and looked down at Diana. A military doctor rushed over and wrapped Diana's body in a blanket. Queen Grace, in her uniform, was unlike her usual neat and elegant appearance, her long hair disheveled and disheveled. Her anger was unmistakable, and she glared at Noah with bloodshot eyes as she rebuked him.
“If you were going to make it like this, and if you weren’t going to protect her, why did you try to take her away?”
Noah glanced at the Queen's feet, then back down at Diana. She looked like a white sheet splattered with blood. He let out a low sigh and slowly raised his head. The man who had been so generous and affectionate to his woman had vanished, leaving only a man with dry eyes. His sharp, clear eyes stared directly at the Queen.
“You couldn’t protect her either. If it weren’t for me, she would have died a long time ago.”
The Queen simply stared at Noah, her lips twisted into a grimace. She gestured to the people around her.
The scattered soldiers and Baroness Mason began searching the surrounding forest. A medical officer examined Diana's condition and applied pressure to her bleeding arm. Medics busily brought in a stretcher and moved Diana away. Noah turned to the Queen, who was standing opposite him, and asked.
“Queen Grace. You dared to kill me?”
"Do you think there's any reason to kill you? I loved you like a younger brother. I indeed wanted to separate her from you for the sake of Diana's right to inherit the throne. But it was also a way to save you."
The Queen took a step toward Noah. Her eyes scanned him with a piercing gaze, as if she were about to cut him down.
"You were the one who deceived me first and married my daughter. You hid Diana's identity because you didn't trust me."
"You're an emotional being who pretends to be rational. Accepting my proposal to place an incompetent, fake leader on the throne is a pointless decision. A truly rational person wouldn't make such a decision."
“Haha. You’re finally showing your true colors.”
The Queen burst into laughter. It was a full morning, the bright sunlight illuminating them, but the surroundings were filled with a dreary, dark night. He brushed his bangs back with a weary expression. Beneath the tangled hair, the face revealed was devoid of even the human emotions he had attempted to mimic. Seeing him return to his true form as the mad Duke, the Queen spoke.
"It's truly a shame that Diana was fooled by your masked appearance. How long did you think this tearful show of devotion would last? You're no different from Admiral Claire."
Noah shrugged and let out a faint laugh.
"Some aspects are similar. The admiral killed the Crown Prince because he believed you, a disgrace to the royal family, would be assassinated. Whether the premise was ambition or a lust for power, the ultimate goal was to save you."
“No, he was already married and had a pregnant wife, yet he deceived me by hoping for my power.”
Noah, who had been observing the Queen's expression as she recalled the unpleasant past, slowly tilted his head.
"I wish you had a good excuse. Even after realizing you been tricked, you couldn't let go of your foolishness, did you?"
"...What?"
"So, why didn't you kill the admiral a long time ago? Even though you would lose your royal title if your affair with a married man was discovered, you kept him alive under the pretext of taking over Belford, which had been conquered by the Frogen?"
The Queen's face turned pale. Noah paused, a corner of his mouth raised in a sneer.
“So, to silence Agnes Harrison, who was his maid, you killed her lover by having him go to war in place of the admiral?”
"That was before I knew the truth. I didn't know that the naval officer was her lover. If I had known sooner, I wouldn't have done it."
"The decisive reason you refused the admiral's proposal was surely the fear that you might be suspected of conspiring in the Crown Prince's assassination and ascending the throne through treason. This means you, too, are someone who prioritizes personal desires and power."
"You're crossing the line. How dare you spit out such insulting words to me?"
"Whether it's true or not, I'm talking about something that could very well be true. That you seized the throne by joining hands with the admiral you had an affair with."
Even if it was a lie, it could be made into a fact and drive her over the edge. The veins on the back of the Queen's tightly clenched white hand stood out.
"Noah Rotsilt. There are limits to how much I can forgive."
Despite stern warnings, he remained cynical and arrogant.
"If you don't forgive me, what can you do? I can uncover the past that my father and the capitalist families covered up, bring down the unfit King, recoup the capital invested in Medea, and even force the company to withdraw completely, and then I'm done. Or, do you still intend to use Diana's life as a weakness? Trying to subjugate me like an ordinary person?"
By then, the Conquering Alliance would have conquered and trampled the world. It was obvious what would happen next.
The Queen squeezed her eyelids shut. Her teeth were grinding with anger, but she couldn't let her emotions get the better of her. The Rotsilt family had been her benefactors and contributors to the selection of Grace II as Queen, but they held a weakness, too. Queen Grace II was merely a King on a chessboard.
She knew that if she were to oppose him now, in the midst of a war, the alliance built on mutual gain and the long-held plans would collapse, and an unmanageable situation would unfold.
“Pretending to obey my orders, turning your back on the capitalist powers and pretending to fight in the war for Diana, and following me obediently... it was all a lie.”
“Well, I tried to give her the world she liked and live the way she liked.”
"You know full well the truth that human nature never changes, Noah. In the end, Diana would have acted as you pleased, regardless of your wishes. She would have been manipulated and led around by you, deceived by the blinding emotion of love."
"Not really. She often ignores what I say. She's independent and stubborn. No matter how much I advise or persuade her, she ultimately makes her own choices."
That's why he liked her for creating new variables. Because she was the only one who could control him. Noah sighed deeply and picked up his uniform coat. He looked down at the Queen and smirked.
“If I were like Admiral Claire, you would have died a long time ago.”
"The same goes for you. I decided to join the war instead of banishing or killing you. Thanks to that, several capitalists turned their backs on Medea. So, you're saying you're going to turn against me? You're trying to make your parents' sacrifices and efforts go down the drain."
"I don't need to go along with your words like before. The results aren't good. The reason I've been so patient and courteous up until now is that you were my wife's mother. The Admiral's example was a good lesson. You'll never get anything done that way."
“You made such an ordinary judgment?”
The Queen's brow furrowed deeply, as if in disbelief. Noah, still standing with his hands in his pockets, lowered his posture and looked down at the Queen.
"She never once considered killing or dethroning you. Rather, she tried to avoid that choice. Oh, yes, I once asked Diana what to do with the admiral, who was no longer of use."
Noah's lips, which had been relaxed, turned into a growl.
"She told me not to kill him because she didn't want to cause trouble. As a result, everything ended up in chaos."
The Queen narrowed her eyes, mulling over Noah's words. Her jet-black hair, contrasting with her pale face, slowly swayed. She was consumed by unbearable self-reproach, pain, and anxiety.
“What are your plans for the future?”
"Well, I'll think about it. As long as my wife is still alive, Medea's plan for victory will remain unchanged. She loves this place. And I still intend to follow her lead. Even if the outcome isn't good, I'll take responsibility."
He tilted his head, his lips curved loosely as if he were imagining something pleasant. Despite his smiling face, his eyes remained clouded. He whispered softly to the Queen.
"If Diana dies, you and this country will be finished. My plans can change at any time, my mother-in-law."
It was a chilling threat. Queen Grace bit her lip, releasing it as she watched Noah's back as he passed by. Was the sole reason he had cooperated with Medea, obeyed her obediently without question, because of one person? Diana was like a control device, suppressing and controlling that man's true nature.
"I almost lost my country and my daughter because I forgot what was most important to me," the Queen muttered to herself, shaking off the chills that ran down her skin as she gazed at the eerie home.
“I... ended up repeating the same mistake. I was always strict and didn’t pay attention to my feelings.”
Diana was immediately rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery. The Queen, pale and trembling, paced the corridor in front of the operating room. Grieved with guilt and fear, she remained awake for long hours, unable to sleep or drink a single sip of water. Baroness Mason simply stood there, watching her with a worried expression.
The doctor came out of the long surgery, gasping for breath, and called the Queen.
“Your Majesty, I regret to say...”
A ring gleamed on his gloved palm. It was the wedding band Diana always wore on her ring finger. As she accepted the ring, the Queen's face darkened with fear and pain.
“What do you mean, it’s a pity?”
“The bullet was removed, and the surgery was completed, but the Princess has not regained consciousness.”
“Is the condition, is the condition not very good?”
“As of now... there’s a high chance that she won’t wake up.”
Queen Grace took a big step forward and touched the doctor's shoulder. Her face was sallow and cold, and she asked him a question in a hushed tone.
“Are you saying there is no way?”
“I'm sorry. I tried my best, but now we have no choice but to wait.”
“I wanted to be loved. Because I had never been loved before.”
Diana's dry face, occasionally smiling, came to mind. The Queen began to wrack herself with unbearable guilt. The hand she had let fall limply trembled with pain. Beneath her slowly raised eyelashes, her sallow green eyes were fully exposed, like the center of a target. The doctor flinched at the ferocity of her expression, like that of a beast.
"We found the body of the captain of the guard nearby, what appears to be Rosalia Lockwood. We believe she joined forces with the Frogen forces to harm the Princess."
The Queen, recalling the report from Baroness Mason that she had heard earlier, lowered her eyes and bit her lip.
"Zelda. I'm bringing forward the date for the retaliatory bombing of the Frogen Effenberg capital."
"Your Majesty, I understand your desperation, but you shouldn't react emotionally. Besides, bombing the Frogen anti-aircraft defense technology, which you've poured so much investment into, will only result in losses."
The Queen raised her chin with an angry expression.
"Is there any reason to present a coherent argument to the country that attempted to kill my daughter? This, too, is for the future of Medea and the world. I can no longer stand by and watch. Give my orders to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces."
In a state of national emergency, the head of state holds supreme command of the armed forces, and the Commander-in-Chief's absolute orders are executed immediately, without parliamentary or judicial approval. Baroness Mason, fully aware of this, bowed and raised her elbows in a gesture of obedience.
“I will follow, Your Majesty.”
The Queen's face was etched with an unfathomable sadness and rage. She turned away, her heart sinking with regret. She approached Noah, who was sitting in the guardian's waiting room, and handed him a ring. He held the ‘Freya's Blessing’ necklace he had given Diana in his hand.
"Let's end the humanitarian approach. We've realized it's useless. From now on, we will pour all our national power, manpower, and capital into any country that refuses to cooperate with us, annihilating them through murder and violence, and annihilating them completely."
Noah, who had been looking down at the ring with an angry tone, raised his head.
There's nothing more contradictory than a conqueror who talks about peace. This place, too, can't escape the stigma of being a war criminal nation. Noah thought to himself, then stood up. He then answered in a flat voice.
“Yes, please.”
The Queen and the Allied monarchs selected the United States of Eugene as one of the key participants in the war. In other words, they were essentially giving up their leading role in the war, thereby granting them the opportunity to become the world's leading power.
The era of monarchs, in which Kings led the world, was coming to an end.
Diana, as she had previously lost consciousness, remained asleep and wouldn't awaken. Even the most skilled medical team couldn't find a solution. Noah Rotsilt declared that he would stay by Princess Diana's side, and Medea's Queen accepted his wishes without question.
"Your Majesty, do not turn your back on House Rotsilt, the shield of the Knights of the Round Table. Three houses have already turned to Frogen, and three have become neutral. If even that man turns his back, our grand plan, built over generations, will be shattered."
This was the opinion of seven of the thirteen houses of the Knights of the Round Table, the center of the capitalist power that provided astronomical amounts of funding to Medea and the Allied Nations. The Queen no longer clung to long-term plans. She simply decided to do so because she wanted her daughter to have a man she loved by her side.
Diana was secretly transferred to the Castle of Estria and placed under the protection of the Duke of Yorkshire, a relative of the House of Spencer. Daniel's mother, Duchess Elisabeth of Hessen, is from this family. Noah also stayed with her. He was curious about what Diana was dreaming about. He believed there was another world, even though he couldn't see it or enter it. Noah asked Diana, who was asleep with an IV drip.
"Diana. You don't like this place, so you're not coming back?"
She didn't answer.
His gaze turned to the window, watching the small body rising and falling to the sound of her soft breathing.
Outside the window, a cloudy sky was reflected, and powdery snow was falling. The streets, where carriages and cars had trodden, looked as slick as tar. Behind the tightly closed shops, soldiers in navy blue uniforms and military vehicles could be seen, and people lined up in the snow to collect salt and sugar rations. He sat there, notebook and pen in hand, reminiscing about the times he had built a snowman with her.
