HFMD - Chapter 10 < This Keep Going Wrong >

The date for the vassals to arrive at the castle was quickly approaching. Until then, the only thing Sylvia had to worry about was rearranging the banquet hall. From small scales such as the alcohol and food that guests eat and drink at a banquet to large-scale equipment repairs in the lounge and guest rooms.

Thelma and thr servants were all excited, saying, ‘Madam’s first banquet!’, and Sylvia, who was next to them, was riding along without realizing it.

Oh, it's hot.

Preparations for the banquet also included the outfits of the head of the family and his wife. It was said that you should not only take care of your castle.

“Duchess, how about wearing this dress for this banquet? The Duke's banquet attire was also said to be silver-grey...”

The dress designer carefully recommended it. Sylvia turned her body towards the mirror with an unimpressed look on her face.

'It would be pretty anyway.'

It may have sounded unlucky, but it was also something that could not be refuted since the person involved was Sylvia. As she expected, Thelma and the maids quietly applauded with thrilled faces. Their lady's face is the welfare of the Duke of Belfort.

'It's okay.'

What was reflected in the mirror was a silver-grey dress with small sparkles. Overall, it flowed smoothly along the lines of the body, giving it an elegant look without being stuffy. Most of all, she liked that it was the same color as Randall's robes. No matter what's going on inside, it will look like they're getting along on the outside.

“If you feel a little cold, you can wear this shawl.”

The designer added. After nodding her head, Sylvia changed back into her everyday clothes with the help of the employees and left the room.

“Is there anything more to do?”

“There are no further instructions for you. The guest room is being reorganized, so you only need to look around the entire room once.”

'hurray.'

Sylvia clenched her fists inwardly. It seemed like the end of this arduous schedule was finally in sight. In fact, there was still more to do than welcome guests and the main banquet, but it meant that a big mountain had been overcome. Once this is over, she will definitely go outside and die screamingly.

Sylvia had an eerie thought and walked away to take a look around the castle. It was then that she went outside to look around the hall and guest rooms, and to inspect the garden and patronage. As she turned the corner of the castle, Sylvia froze in shock at the sight that caught her eye.

'...Dead body?'

The place where the sun shines warmly. A person was lying face down on the lawn that the gardeners had skillfully trimmed. Papers with something densely written on them were scattered haphazardly around it. Sylvia asked Thelma with a serious look on her face.

“Thelma.”

“Yes, Ma’am.”

“No way, that... Is it a person?”

“A person?”

Thelma looked away in confusion. She was startled when she found the seal lying on the grass and went over to it.

This kid! What is that!”

“Wait a minute, Thelma...”

Sylvia was embarrassed and called Thelma. At her age, it may not be good for her health if she checks her body in person. However, the scene that followed was far from Sylvia's expectations.

“You damn human! You do that anywhere! I told you not to lie down! Madam was surprised!”

“Aaaah!”

Thelma slapped the corpse's back with the force of her words. Then the body of the person who appeared to be dead began to flutter and come to life. Only then did Sylvia realize that it was Auston.

“Ah, bitter! Anyway, as long as the old lady is strong! What will happen if you wake me up a little more gently?”

“What can I say to a person who falls down anywhere on a random day and surprises people?”

“‘Anywhere’? Do you think someone as sensitive and picky as I would sleep anywhere? Everything was thoroughly calculated..."

“You must be young.”

Thelma snorted familiarly as if this wasn't the first time something like this had happened. Auston stood up, muttering with his arrogant face crumpled. He must have been lying down on his paper when she heard a rustling sound. Unlike when she treated Auston, Thelma smiled kindly at Sylvia in a polite manner.

“Go, Ma’am. I will put this away.”

“W-what is this? You look at people like this?”

“... For a moment."

Auston was furious. Meanwhile, Sylvia raised her hand with narrow eyes as if assessing something. This lighting, temperature, humidity...

'Perfect.'

Sylvia was silently amazed. The spot where Auston had fallen was truly a perfect place to sleep. Sunlight without stinging. Cool wind. Even suitable shade from trees. She understood why Auston had fallen asleep like his dead body.

'But if I suggested putting a bed over there, everyone would be shocked.'

Sylvia, who was struggling, gave up on moving the bed there. Instead, she grinned, intending to rest there for a while.

“It’s been a while. It's fate that we met like this, but can I sit next to you for a while? If you have something to do, I won’t disturb you.”

“... Well, whatever you say. This place doesn’t belong to me anyway.”

Auston spoke with a bit of sarcasm and nodded roughly. It didn't bother him that Sylvia suddenly pretended to be happy, but now was the time to focus on work.

Auston gathered up the papers scattered on the ground and sat down with his back under the tree next to him. Sylvia shook her head at Thelma, who said she would bring a parasol and a mat, and sat down on the grass. Auston paused from scribbling down the formula on a piece of paper and glanced back at the scene.

'...Surprisingly. I thought you would hate it.'

Brown eyes narrowed with wariness. The Count Florette was a prestigious family that was well known. For an aristocratic daughter who grew up surrounded only by luxurious items from the time she was born, she had a fairly simple attitude.

Auston glanced at Sylvia with wary eyes.

‘Take a look...'

Sylvia felt those gazes but thought nothing of it as she fell into a world of deep sleep.

Well, it's true that Silvia Florette's appearance is nice to admire. In a broad sense, she was a face that helped humanity achieve peace of mind and body. Meanwhile, Auston's hand, which was watching Sylvia with one eye and writing down a formula on the paper with the other, slipped. He screamed when he realized too late that a line had been drawn across the neatly arranged letters.

“Aaaah!”

“...?”

“If this happens, I have to write a new one... It can't be like this... My time and money...”

Auston, who had stayed up all night for several nights improving the formula, muttered in a half-fazed manner. He was preoccupied with something else, and the numbers were written so tightly that he couldn't even see where the lines were drawn. Of course, if he did the calculation again, he would be able to see where the mistake was, but he was repeating the same thing for the 27th time in a few days.

The piece of paper he had just written on there corresponded to the thirty-third page of the total formula. This means that in order to find the mistake, he has to solve the fifteen formulas again from the beginning. It is the repetition of minor misfortunes that destroys humans over time. What brings down Auston Dossler is the approaching deadline and the subsequent evaporation of additional allowances...

“You’re all wrong, all that’s left for humanity is destruction...”

When Auston finally predicted the destruction of the world, Sylvia wondered something and shifted her gaze to the paper he was holding in his hand. Her eyes widened when she saw the formulas that filled the back of her paper.

'... Is it a barrier magic formula?'

The shape seemed somewhat familiar, and it seemed to be a formula based on the barrier magic she had developed.

'It seems like they are trying to strengthen the barrier.'

Sylvia was deep in thought. A few days ago, when Chick Hetla came to visit her, she was so upset that she secretly thought about strengthening the barrier and securing top-level escorts. But several days have already passed. At that time, her mind was gone, and Sylvia had regained her cool mind - her will to rest. If Auston succeeds in strengthening the barrier, the knights' response to the twist will become faster. And when that happens... He also lowers her chances of dying accidentally!

'Let's stop it.'

After coming to a simple and clear conclusion, Sylvia smiled brightly and took the wad of paper from Auston's dazed hand. Auston, who had been pessimistic about the world through his unfocused eyes, looked back at her in surprise.

Sylvia spoke naturally.

“Let’s take a look.”

“...Ma’am?”

“Why are you so unreliable? Even if it looks like this, my father is the vice president of Elvares Academy.”

“I understand that you have never attended the academy.”

“The Academy books were all over the Florette mansion. Even if I didn't take the class, it doesn't mean I didn't see or hear anything. Because I’m a bit of a genius.”

Sylvia made an excuse that was close to the truth, but seemed very unlucky to others, then picked up the pen that had been rolling on the grass and scanned the paper with her eyes. Immediately after, her expression became serious.

'Isn't it already bad?'

She was planning to secretly complicate the calculations when Auston wasn't looking. The formulas written on the paper were somehow subtly missing the point. Moreover, he is making things complicated by adding useless calculations from time to time.

'Thelma said that Auston is evaluated to be the only wizard after me who can bear the title of Archmage.'

It's been a while, a long way. Sylvia clicked her tongue and unconsciously crossed out useless calculations.

'...Oh, it's not here.'

When she was Alyssa, it became a habit to overturn her colleagues' research materials. While Sylvia was a little late and startled, Auston screamed at her and snatched the paper out of her hand.

“What are you doing now! I need to save at least half of my life!”

In his eyes, it just looked like someone who didn't know anything was drawing lines at random. Auston hurriedly checked the paper. He may have lost sight of some of the numbers, but he still had to save the rest. But he, who had been quickly calculating from the previous page, blinked.

'What?'

Obviously, the calculations above and below the part where Sylvia drew the line should not be correct. Her calculations continued smoothly, even except for the part she erased. Confused, he flipped through the paper and checked other parts, but the same thing happened.

'This...!'

Auston was not a genius like Alyssa, but he was definitely in the ranks of geniuses. When Sylvia excluded all the parts where she had crossed the line, the length of the formula was reduced by half. Moreover, after she cut out the useless parts, it became clear what he was doing wrong and which direction he should take.

Auston fell to his knees on the grass, holding the wad of paper in his arms. His eyes were filled with gratitude and respect for Sylvia.

"Lady...”

“I don’t think people who don’t know anything should touch it hastily. Let’s just go.”

Sylvia, feeling ominous, quickly got up. In Auston's eyes, it seemed like humility.

“...And if possible, don't say that I had a hand in it. Did you understand?”

She glanced anxiously at Auston, who was still kneeling and had no intention of getting up and then hurried away. In Auston's eyes, it seemed like an incredible act of humility.

Succeeding in improving barrier magic was an incredible feat, enough to leave a mark in the history of magic. It would be understandable that she was boasting that she had helped him to do such a thing, but she remained as if she had no idea what she had done.

Even though he was busy being wary and suspicious of her...!

"Lady-!"

Auston fell to the ground and wailed with emotion.

Sylvia ran into her room, trying to ignore the loud voice ringing behind her.

***

That evening.

“...Auston.”

"Yes?"

“...What’s wrong with your face?”

Randall asked Auston with a strange look on his face. When Auston came to submit his report, both cheeks were swollen as if he had been hit by someone. But Auston answered calmly.

“Oh, it’s no big deal. Please review."

“No, I think it’s a big deal...”

"No."

When Auston denied it again, Randall reluctantly agreed and lowered his gaze to the report. Auston muttered to himself while Randel looked at the contents of the report.

‘You crazy guy. No matter how blind you are to money, that woman is Florette. It is said to be the family that the current King trusts the most. But how can you not brag about this everywhere? Is she an angel?'

Slap.

As his thoughts began to take another strange turn, Auston lifted his hand and slapped himself on the cheek. Surprised, Randall got up from his seat and shouted, ‘Doctor!' Although there was a bit of a commotion as he shouted, 'Auston is crazy!'

Auston had to walk around the castle for days afterward with his cheeks swollen. Randall could not hide his sigh, saying that the number of strange people in the castle had increased again.
