Episode 37-Everyone Has Rights
2026.04.02
It was a few days later when the samples arrived from the Viscount Müller estate. It was a small wooden box. When the lid was opened, four items were neatly arranged inside. These were the very things Martha had discussed with Viscount Müller in the herb garden. Herb salt, room spray, scented candles, and a small glass jar. Each item had a label carefully attached. It was the first sample made directly by the upper echelons of the Viscount Müller estate. It was crafted exclusively from herbs grown on the estate of the Duke of Valois. Martha opened the box and took them out one by one. Lavender, rosemary, thyme, and mint. These were the things she had told the villagers to plant during her visit to the estate. They looked utterly useless now, but the things she had instructed them to grow had now been arranged and presented like this. As she closed the box, Martha looked at Maxim. "Let's have lamb for lunch today." Maxim nodded. "And contact Viscount Müller. Ask if he can come today." Afternoon. People gathered in the drawing room. Claude, Isabella, Edward, and Martha. And then there were Viscount Müller and Lily. A wooden box lay on the table.
Viscount Müller looked at the box and said, "These are the first samples.
They are made exclusively from herbs from the Valois estate, so the quality is guaranteed. However, you will have to try each product yourself to know for sure." Martha said, "You have to try it to know. In that sense." Viscount Müller looked at Martha. Martha said, "Let's start with the meal." Lily beside then lit up. Viscount Müller looked at Martha for a moment, then nodded. He already knew. The Duchess of Valois was someone who always made sure everyone ate before doing anything. The lamb prepared for lunch was placed in the center of the table. Among the samples, the herb salt was the first. Martha picked up a small bottle. She looked at the label. She opened the lid. She brought it to her nose. It smelled of rosemary and thyme. The scent of salt was mixed in with it. It was not pungent. It was a fragrance that spread subtly. As she inhaled the scent, Martha thought. Before the regression, I had seen the cooks use herbs in the Imperial Palace kitchen dozens of times. Back then, they were just herbs, but mixing them with salt to make this mixture was a completely different experience. Martha sprinkled it lightly over the lamb. Then she picked up a piece and took a bite. She chewed for a moment and then stopped. Oh. There was no gamey smell. The distinctive gamey odor of lamb was gone. Instead, the scent of the herbs mingled with the aroma of the meat and rose up. The flavor had changed. It was the same meat, yet it felt like eating something completely different. She could feel the scent permeating the meat. Martha looked at Viscount Müller. "Please try some." Viscount Müller picked up a piece and ate it. As he chewed, his expression changed. At first, he looked like he was just eating, but as he chewed, his expression turned into one of discovery. Lily couldn't hold back and spoke. "Me too." Lily took a bite. "Oh my. There is no gamey smell. It is lamb, but it feels completely different." Isabella carefully picked up a piece, took a bite, and spoke. "You're right. I didn't know herbal scents paired so well with meat. It's even tastier than the meat served at the Imperial Palace banquets." Claude took a silent bite. He nodded slowly as he chewed. Once. Twice. Edward said, "If we supplied this to the Imperial Palace, the reaction would be great. I think the palace chefs would love it. Getting rid of the gamey smell is the most important part of meat dishes." Martha said. "Exactly." Viscount Muller said, looking into the herb salt. "The key is getting the ratio of herbs right, and this sample seems well-balanced. The ratio of rosemary to thyme is just right" Martha nodded and ate more lamb. The first one passed. The meal ended, and they returned to the drawing room. This time, it was room spray Martha picked up a glass bottle. It was a small bottle with a pump. She opened the lid and pressed it once. Hiss. The scent of lavender filled the drawing room. Everyone paused for a moment. It was a brief moment to stop what they were doing and take in the fragrance. The scent was not strong. It wasn't harsh. The subtle, soft scent characteristic of lavender slowly spread through the air, enveloping the entire drawing room. Isabella closed her eyes and then opened them. "It's nice," said Lily. "If I spray it in the room, does this scent last all day? I think I'd sleep better if this scent filled the bedroom." Viscount Muller said, "The duration might vary slightly, but based on the sample, it lasts about two to three hours. It lasts longer if you spray it directly on the bedding. Since there are claims that lavender helps with sleep, we could market it in that direction." Isabella took the bottle and pressed it once more. Hiss. The lavender scent intensified. "I'd like to put this in the bedroom," Claude said, looking at the room spray. "It would be nice to have one in the study." Martha looked at Claude. Claude looked away and said, "I just like the scent. When I work in the study for a long time, it feels stuffy, so I thought having something like this wouldn't be bad." Edward spoke, trying to suppress a laugh. "It would be fascinating if Father's study smelled of lavender." Claude looked at Edward. Edward quickly turned his gaze to the window. Watching this scene, Martha thought to herself. The second product passed. The third was a scented candle. Martha picked up the candle and stood up from her seat. "Let's go to the bathroom." Everyone followed Martha to the bathroom. It was July, so it was humid. There was the distinctive humid air of a bathroom. There was that unique damp smell that comes from a bathroom in the summer Martha placed the candle on a shelf on one side of the bathroom and lit it A small flame rose. They waited for a moment. The scent began to rise It was a mixture of lavender and rosemary However, the way the scent rose in the humid air was different. The scent seemed to grow deeper and richer as it mixed with the humidity It was much more intense and softer than the scent one smells in a dry place. As Marta smelled it, she thought to herself If this scent wafted through the air on a rainy day. it felt like it would soothe her mind. If this fragrance filled the space on a damp and stuffy day, the humidity would likely transform from an unpleasantness into a sense of warmth. Isabella entered and said, "Oh my." That was all. That single word encapsulated everything. Lily entered and said, "It's nice. This is really good. If this scent filled the bathroom on a rainy day, I think taking a bath would become enjoyable." Edward entered, smelled the scent, and remarked, "It would be a disaster if the bathroom smelled like this." Marta looked at Edward. "Why?" "Because I wouldn't want to come out. Because I want to keep staying." Marta thought for a moment and nodded. "That's right," Lily said. "That's true. If bathing becomes enjoyable, you want to wash more often, don't you?" Edward said. "Is that really such a good thing?" Viscount Muller spoke quietly. "I think it would be well-received by noble ladies. It would be good to position it as a bathroom product." The third one passed, too. The fourth was Herb North Solution. It was a small glass bottle It contained a highly concentrated blend of mint-based herbs. The scent rose immediately when the lid was opened. Marta opened the lid and held it to her nose. In an instant, it felt as if her nose had completely cleared. A strong mint scent surged up. It was stimulating, but not unpleasant. It felt as if the inside of her nose was cooling down and her head was clearing up as well. Marta put it down and looked around. She looked at the people sitting at the table. Claude, Isabella, Edward, Lily, and Viscount Muller They were all healthy people No one had a stuffy nose at this time of year Marta said, "To verify this properly, someone with a stuffy nose would have to try it, but everyone here has perfectly clear noses." Viscount Muller replied, "That is true. It is the middle of summer" Marta thought for a moment, then stood up. "Bruno." Edward looked at Martha. "Mr. Bruno the Gardener?" "You told me your nose gets really stuffy every change of season. And working in the garden right now might make your nose itchy from the pollen." Edward said. "It's not even the change of season, so why bother asking him?" "I can just go and ask him. Let's check how his nose is right now." Edward looked at Martha with a bewildered expression, but she was already leaving the drawing room. As Martha and her party reached the garden, Bruno stopped while tidying the flowerbeds upon seeing her. Martha said, "Mr. Bruno, do you have a moment?" Bruno nodded, took off his gloves, and walked over to Martha. Martha held out the Herb North Solution. "Can you try this? You just hold it to your nose and smell it. Does your nose feel itchy from the pollen?" Bruno sniffed once, thought for a moment, and said, "Actually, my nose has been a bit itchy lately while working in the garden. Whether it's because of the pollen or something else." Marta said, "That makes perfect sense. Open the lid and hold it to your nose." Bruno took the bottle, opened the lid, and held it to his nose. Instantly, Bruno's eyes widened. "This..." "How is it?" "It feels like my nose is completely cleared. The tickling sensation has subsided instantly. It feels refreshing." Marta looked at Viscount Müller. Viscount Müller nodded as he jotted something down in his notebook. Bruno sniffed it once more. "It really is refreshing. This would be great to have during the change of seasons. I suffer from a runny nose every year during this time. Princess, can I buy this later, too?" Marta asked. "That is exactly what we make it for" Bruno smiled brightly, nodded, and returned to the flowerbed. Edward spoke beside Marta "The fact that even a gardener tried it will be good publicity" Marta replied, "Nobles aren't the only ones who will use this product Bruno's reaction might be more important." Edward glanced at Martha for a moment as he heard those words. Passed the fourth time, too.
Martha stopped as she returned to the drawing room. A thought crossed her mind. She looked at the samples remaining in the box. Then she looked at the people sitting at the table: Claude, Isabella, Edward, Viscount Muller, and Lily. Martha said, "Just a moment." Everyone looked at Martha. Martha looked at Viscount Muller. "Do you have plenty more samples?"
"Yes, we do. I made extra stock just in case." "In that case, I would like to postpone the final confirmation for today a little." Viscount Muller looked at Martha. "Is there a reason?" Martha asked. "It doesn't seem like we are the ones who actually need to verify this. There is somewhere we need to go briefly before the final confirmation." As Martha gathered the sample box, she looked at Edward. "Brother, can you come with me?" Edward said.
"Now?" "Yes. Right now." Edward thought for a moment, then stood up. "I don't know what it is, but fine. Let's go." Martha and Edward were sitting side by side in the carriage. Edward said, "We could have finished checking the samples here. Viscount Müller is here, and my father is here too." Martha looked out the window and said, "No.""Why?" Martha said after a moment of thought. "There are people who need to try this first."
The carriage traveled for quite a while and arrived at the estate village.
Martha and Edward stepped out of the carriage. The villagers recognized Martha and greeted her warmly. The news that the Duchess had returned spread deep into the village. Children ran out. The women came out wiping their hands. The adults stopped what they were doing and came out.
Martha took out a sample box. "These are made from the herbs you grew. Please try them first." The villagers looked at the box. They looked at the contents. Pretty bottles, carefully crafted labels. One woman spoke cautiously "Is it alright for us to try such high-quality products? You are going to sell them at a noble family." Martha said. "People came first, then grass, did grass come first, then people?" "You are qualified." "Serena, wouldn't grass grow first and people grow?" Martha looked at Edward. Then she lightly tapped his mouth. "You snout." Edward covered his mouth and said, "You hit me." "You were talking nonsense." The villagers burst into laughter Some wore worried expressions. However, Martha beckoned everyone over, and as they touched the products one by one, their stiff expressions began to soften. The initial cautious atmosphere dissipated all at once. Martha took out some herb salt and said, "Try this first. You sprinkle it when grilling meat." There was a brazier on one side of the village. She placed the meat on it. Martha sprinkled the herb salt herself. An aroma rose. The smell of grilling meat mingled with the scent of herbs, spreading through the village alley. The villagers sniffed. A man asked, "What kind of scent is this?" "Can grilled meat really smell this good?" Marta asked. "It's rosemary and thyme that you grew." The man paused. "...Grown by us?" "Yes. We processed what we grew in the field." The man picked up a piece of meat and ate it. His eyes widened. "This is really delicious. There's no gamey smell." The woman standing nearby ate some too. "Oh my, is this made from herbs we grew? To think something this good comes out?" The villagers started eating one by one. Their reactions were all similar. That it was delicious. That there was no gamey smell. That the herbal scent was good. They were amazed that they had grown it themselves. Watching them, Marta thought, "That's enough." She sprayed the room spray in the village hall. As the lavender scent spread, the women gasped in delight. She lit the scented candle in a damp corner of the warehouse As the musty smell subsided and the fragrance rose, the villagers marveled. She gave the Herb North Solution to an old man who suffers every change of season. The old man opened the lid, took a sniff, and his eyes widened. "What is this?" It feels like my nose is completely cleared out. "It feels refreshing " The villagers laughed. Martha laughed too. Watching them, Edward thought, "So this is Serena's way" It wasn't a method dictated from above. It was a method where she came down herself and tried writing together. Edward could see with his own eyes how this was being received by these people. The people, who had been cautious at first, changed little by little as they laughed and ate with Martha.
Edward took notes as he watched this. Martha watched them and thought, "Edward is learning, too." As she walked toward the carriage to return, she heard footsteps behind her. Martha turned around. It was a girl. She must have been about twelve. She looked as though she had run, panting. There was dirt on her clothes. It looked like she had rushed over after doing something. Her cheeks were red. Martha looked at the girl. She was Johan's daughter. She was the child she had rescued from the warehouse in the hills long ago. Back then, she had been crying out of fear, but now she looked different. Her gaze was different. The girl caught her breath and stood before Martha. "My Lady." "Yes." The girl looked at Martha. Her eyes were serious. The pretense There was nothing. She could feel that he had rushed over to say what he wanted to say. "Thank you. For giving us this opportunity." Martha looked at the girl. She looked into her eyes for a moment. Martha said, "Opportunities are available to everyone. You raised them, didn't you? That's how it turned out. I didn't give you an opportunity; you created it." The girl looked at Martha for a moment, then bowed her head deeply. Martha stroked the girl's head once. Lightly. Naturally. And she got into the carriage. Inside the carriage. Edward sat next to Martha. The carriage began to move. There was silence for a moment. Then Martha looked at Edward. "I was pretty cool at the end, wasn't I?" Edward looked at Martha. Martha said with a serious face, "No, really. When I said, 'Opportunities are available to everyone." "Wasn't it kind of cool?" Edward said after looking at Martha for a while "You really do all sorts of things" Martha said, looking out the window. "I'm saying it was cool." Edward remained silent. Martha thought while looking out the window. Opportunities come to everyone. That's true. You'll find out as you live.
[Lucy's Secret Shock Journal - Episode 37] | later asked the Princess why she took the samples to the people of the estate first today. Because they were things imbued with their blood and sweat. That was all. She had kept her promise. The Princess is always like that. She keeps her word.
