TGDHW - Chapter 28

“What is going on!”

Erna ran down the hill screaming. She, too, quickly noticed the anomaly. She couldn't have been unaware. From the hill where she was standing, the monsters crawling up the ground were all too clearly visible.

She looked up at the sky as she ran. The letters in the center of the magic formula were flashing and spinning rapidly. The infusion of magical power into the part she was in charge of was perfectly finished. The problem was the other parts.

She was in charge of the characters that determine the nature and form, which are essentially the heart of the magical formula, but other wizards handled the auxiliary characters, such as setting the range and ensuring no harm is done to humans.

It was such a powerful magic, and since there were not many opportunities to use such powerful magic, Erna deliberately entrusted a large part of it to them in the hope that everyone would gain practical experience.

“If I had known this would happen, I would have done it alone!”

Watching the magic formula gradually lose its light, Erna ran even harder toward the wizards.

Although she taught them diligently, everyone still lacks practical experience. The same was true for her. After all, the moment she saw the monsters crawling up from the ground, she was seized with fear, and her body froze for a moment. The other mages would likely be no different.

How many people are there who can protect themselves?

Most of their magical power must have been poured into the magic formulas floating in the sky. Furthermore, there were not many mages capable of quickly casting offensive or protective spells. If monsters were to strike...

Who would have thought someone would just let that happen!

Every single wizard was someone she had brought in and raised. There were some, like Orpheus, who were older than Erna, but that was not important.

The greatest achievement she had accomplished was in Hessengard. Her pride. Her power. That was her wizards.

Erna wrote in the air as she ran. It soon glowed and spun rapidly, quickly transforming into a massive fireball. Then, it flew straight toward the monster rising from the ground.

Pow pow pow!

With a massive explosion, the screams of monsters and rising smoke billowed into the air. If a mage from the Magic Tower had been here, they would have let out a scream of horror.

Since magic requires concentration in a stable state, moving while casting it was nearly impossible. Doing so would immediately break the concentration, causing the carefully drawn spell formula and the magical power contained within it to vanish.

However, even while running and shouting, Erna effortlessly succeeded in casting a powerful attack spell.

While the monsters were panicking, Erna looked for nearby mages. Fortunately, while she was attacking the approaching monsters, several of them regained their senses and quickly began using protective magic.

"We're fine!"

“Miel! Miel is inside!”

Miel was the name of the youngest wizard in the Order of Wizards. She was only sixteen years old. Miel was a very timid child who had been brought along because she begged and pleaded to go with them, even though they had intended to leave her at the Grand Duke's castle.

"Yes!"

Erna ran in the direction the wizards pointed. Looking up at the sky, she saw that the massive magic she had created was slowing down the rotation of the letters because the infusion of magical power had stopped. If she didn't infuse it again immediately, what she had spent hours creating was about to vanish.

'We have to hurry.'

She had to quickly evacuate the wizards to safety and then complete that magic.

“Aaaah!”

Miel's scream was heard from deep within the forest. Erna quickly ran toward it. As she pushed through the bushes, she saw Miel sitting on the ground and a monster swinging its claws and rapidly approaching right in front of her.

“Miel!”

The moment Erna was about to use her protective magic, another monster nearby leaped toward her. Erna instinctively kicked it away. While she managed to block the attack, the protective magic she had created vanished because her concentration was completely lost.

If things continue like this.

Miel gets scratched right by the monster's claws. The moment she thought that, Erna hugged the curled-up Miel with her whole body.

Kyaaaak!

Hearing the monster's scream, Erna closed her eyes at the thought of the impending pain. I don't want to be in pain!

Puck!

At that moment, with a dull thud, the monster that had been lunging at Erna and Miel flew through the air. Flying at high speed, it struck a nearby tree and fell to the ground with a popping sound. Sticky bodily fluids flowed down from the tree where the monster had struck. It had literally exploded to death.

"What..."

Is this magic, too? Who wrote this? The moment Erna quickly lifted her head and turned around.

"Are you okay?"

As a huge shadow enveloped her, a familiar voice was heard.

Callion was standing there, gasping for breath.

Before Erna could answer, the monster crawling on the ground lunged at Callion. While Miel, who was in Erna's arms, screamed again, Callion mercilessly drew his sword. His hand moved so fast it was invisible, and before Erna could even realize what had happened, the charging monster's body split in half and rolled across the ground.

Watching the blue fluid form a large puddle around the split corpse, Erna lifted Miel up. Then, she cast a protective spell on herself and shouted.

“Go to the entrance of the forest and stay with the other wizards!”

Then Miel rubbed her tear-stained eyes and grabbed Erna.

“Where, Grand Duke?”

“Is this the time for you to be worrying about me? Go on!”

Miel hesitated as Erna pushed her from behind, as if telling her to hurry up.

"Hurry!"

Only when Erna shouted again did the child turn around and run toward the entrance of the forest.

"I've hung it up securely, so there shouldn't be any problems until we arrive."

The protective magic she had cast on Miel was simple, yet sturdy. It was sufficient to keep the child safe until the other mages were there. Seeing Miel disappear into the distance, Erna quickly turned around. Other mages still remained in the forest. It was the moment Erna was about to run toward them.

Yank.

A large hand hurriedly grabbed Erna's arm. As a result, she staggered violently as she was walking and fell backward. Fortunately, however, Callion's other hand caught her before she hit the ground.

"What?"

Erna glared at Callion. Then she saw the monster corpse lying beside him again. She realized that she had been so flustered that she hadn't even thanked Callion for saving her and Miel from the monster.

“Thanks for now, and let go of this.”

“Wait. Where are you going alone?”

“There are still wizards inside!”

"The Knights will save them."

As if to prove Callion's words true, the figures of knights running through the forest came into view. The sound of them ruthlessly slicing through monsters could also be heard. Soon, amidst the sounds of fighting, shouts calling for mages mingled from all directions. Hearing this, Erna spoke in a worried voice.

"Your knights are in danger too."

“They aren’t weak enough to die at the hands of a monster like that. More importantly...”

Callion pointed to the magic formula still floating in the sky.

"What happens to that?"

Erna followed his hand and looked up at the sky. The central part she had infused with magic was still shining, but the parts handled by the other mages were rapidly losing their light. Erna quickly thought about what to do. To infuse the other parts, she had to go to where the mages originally assigned to those areas were. So, if Erna infused the magic herself instead of them, it could move again.

'But...'

Erna gazed at the forest filled with the screams of monsters. She had to concentrate when infusing magic into a spell. She had to be even more careful with something so massive and intricate. That meant she couldn't do anything while working on it. In other words, she wouldn't be able to fend off a monster attack.

While Erna was racking her brain, Callion looked at the forest.

There are more than he thought.

He knew there were many monsters. However, as he watched the number of monsters crawling out of the lake, Callion felt a chill run down his spine. In fact, such a massive number began to emerge that he wondered if the entire surface of the water was actually filled with monsters.

His knight order would not be defeated by such small monsters. However, being human, they would eventually reach their physical limit if they continued to fight, and it was clear that they would collapse if they were scratched or bitten even once.

If you kill them one by one, there's no end to it.

Then there is only one way. To ensure that the magic the wizards originally prepared can be cast safely. Carillon asked Erna.

“How can that be cast?”

Erna quickly answered his question.

"I have to go."

"Where?"

"To where the wizards in charge of the side were."

“Where is that?”

“It’s all over the forest! It’s not just one place!”

Erna knocked away the arm that was being held by Callion.

“So let go! If you don’t fix this quickly, then...”

"I will go with you."

"What?"

Erna couldn't believe her ears for a moment. Did Callion just say he would go with her? As she looked at him as if asking what on earth he was thinking, he gripped his sword tighter and answered.

“There are more monsters than I thought. I hate to admit it, but our knight order cannot handle all of them. In that case, we have no choice but to borrow the power of magic.”

He continued speaking without giving Erna a chance to say anything.

“Our purpose in coming here is to rescue the residents of Haldis and exterminate the monsters. To achieve that goal, we can join hands with anyone. Although...”

Callion's gaze turned toward Erna.

“...Even if it’s someone you aren’t particularly keen on. Isn’t that right?”
