SOIC - Chapter 34

Episode 34. Noah Crosses the Sea

A few weeks later, late at night.

Olivia was constantly fanning herself and reviewing the lecture material she had already reviewed dozens of times.

If this is the heat of a late spring evening, how hot will this summer be! It would be nice if they could at least leave the door open, but Olivia's little house was meticulously locked, down to every single window.

Rumors seem to have spread that the house was inhabited by a woman alone, as she already seen a black silhouette peeking out the window several times. She reported it to the police, but how could they possibly catch someone they haven't even seen?

Olivia was anxious, so she stayed at a cheap hotel instead of home for a few days, but that only lasted a day or two.

She thought about asking Professor Marguerite for help, but she was already receiving so much help for free that she didn't dare to ask.

She eventually put the house on the market, but no one had yet come forward to buy it. With her current budget, even finding a cheap room was difficult, so Olivia had no choice but to stay.

Olivia, who had become sensitive to even the smallest noises and had looked out the window several times, was exhausted from the heat and her sensitive nerves, so she closed her book and collapsed on the bed.

“Ugh...”

The family photos on the wall shimmered in the flickering candlelight. Olivia gazed at her grandmother's face and muttered.

“Grandma, if I don’t have any students this time, I’ll be fired.”

There was no answer back.

The silence, filled only with the sound of her breathing, covered her entire body like a blanket. Olivia let out a small laugh and then curled up.

Whether she closed her eyes or opened them, it was pitch black. Olivia, curled up in the darkness, habitually thought of Herod.

“If I get cut off again this time, I think I’ll go to Herod.”

Yesterday, a document arrived stating that her dual citizenship had expired. Olivia now faced the real challenge of having to renounce either Herod's or Pulder's citizenship. The deadline was September of this year.

“Or... should I just go and live in Herod?”

Is that really true?

I went to the city of Lorewell that I had always wanted to visit, and I went to the Golden Lion statue again...

Then suddenly he came to mind.

It was only a short period of about a week, but perhaps because the memories were so vivid, she couldn't quite forget those days at Herod's Palace.

It's funny, but looking back, maybe it was because she briefly felt the protection she had been longing for there.

“Noah Astrid...”

Olivia whispered his name.

Then she just started laughing.

Perhaps the Prince had even forgotten her existence.

“Even if I go to Herod, I must not go near Herod’s palace.”

The majestic golden bars didn't suit her old clothes.

Just as her bare hands felt ashamed in front of his hands, which were clad in nice black gloves.

Olivia blew out the candles and, as was her custom, listened outside the window for any noise. Seeing no response, she took out two sleeping pills, popped them in her mouth, and lay down on the bed.

She used to fall asleep as soon as she lay her head down, but as soon as she lay down, the weight of life that came crashing down on her started to cause insomnia.

“It’ll be okay. It’ll be okay.”

Then, repeating those words as if it were a habit, she slowly sank beneath the surface.

“Tomorrow... I have to buy the professor a crepe cake...”

At that time, the ship Noah was on was sailing diligently toward Pulda.

Noah stepped out of the room, still wearing his robe. As soon as he opened the door, a cool sea breeze swept over him.

After nearly three weeks of sailing, he was actually quite bored. He leaned back against the railing, his cigarette in his mouth, and tilted his head back. A large moon was peering down at him, as if it were about to pour down.

Noah, who had been staring blankly at the moon, turned his head to the side and looked in the direction the boat was sailing.

There's Pulder at the end. And...

For some reason, Noah put the cigarette back in his mouth.

Hair as black as this night and eyes that rippled like black waves.

King Herod was not a man who did things carelessly.

Judging from the dozens of pages of his investigation, the woman he thought was doing quite well did not seem to be living such a peaceful life.

"Pulder is no different. It's just a republic in name only."

Noah's mutterings were carried away by the strong sea breeze.

He burst out laughing when he saw the record of a top Herrington College graduate who hadn't been able to secure a decent job for nearly two years.

Moreover, it seemed certain that she would soon be dismissed from her position as interim professor at Herrington College.

There were records showing that the noble association of the Pulder disliked her tenure and intentionally cancelled her spring semester courses. So, would summer courses be any different?

Then, he remembered the woman who had wandered alone and crying in a maze without a light on that autumn night.

Yeah, is Herod any different?

It's not where you exist that matters; it's who you exist as.

And Ansen Wilhelm...

His gaze, which lightly scanned his face, sank deeper than the black sea that broke into foam.

There was no record of Olivia ever visiting him. There was only a record of Ansen Wilhelm visiting her.

“I guess that kid likes being alone.”

He likes her on his own, but like Lawrence said, he seems hesitant to take her as his wife because it would be too low a standard.

But Noah Astrid is on his way to propose to her.

Would Ansen Wilhelm laugh or be offended?

Noah entered the room with a smile on his lips that was either a mockery or something else.

He will arrive at Pulder in about two days.

The more anxious she became, the more focused she became on the class. She was so enthusiastic that other professors passing by were amazed.

After reviewing the class material she already reviewed dozens of times throughout the morning, she went to the cafe on campus to buy her favorite crepe cake and a cold coffee. Then, she headed straight to Margot's office.

“Oh my, come in.”

Margot smiled brightly and greeted Olivia.

Olivia greeted them politely and placed the coffee and cake she had bought for Margot on the table.

“What’s yours?”

“I’m going to my office to eat.”

Margot smiled and nodded, knowing that Olivia was preparing for class with such perfection that it bordered on obsession.

“What else is there to prepare?”

“Professor, where is the end to learning?”

“Huh, that’s right. It leaves me speechless.”

“The weather is getting hotter and hotter. It feels like summer came early.”

“That’s right. I’m worried about how I’ll get through this summer.”

“Then I’ll be going now.”

Olivia nodded with a smile and turned around.

“Olivia!”

"Yes?"

Margot called her over and remained silent for a moment. As she opened her eyes even wider and tilted her head, Margot finally let out a laugh.

“Eat well.”

“Yes. I am always grateful.”

As Olivia disappeared out the door, Margot rubbed her forehead and let out a long sigh.

Tomorrow is the day to register for the lecture.

So tomorrow will determine whether Olivia will be able to stay in college or not.

She pretends to be cheerful and cheerful, but what is she really like inside?

“I made a pointless suggestion... I wonder if I’m just adding salt to her wounded heart.”

Margot stared at the cake and the coffee Olivia had given her for a long time.

And early the next morning.

Olivia got dressed and left the house at dawn.

She checked and rechecked the lock several times. A month ago, Mrs. McPhee, who lived nearby, moved away, and the place felt noticeably deserted.

“If I can continue my teaching career because classes aren’t canceled today, I’ll have to stay in cheap accommodations for the time being.”

As people left town one by one, the carriage stopped coming to her house. Olivia had to walk a long way to Fourth Street before finally boarding a multi-person carriage.

Even leaning her head back for a moment on the rattling carriage made her feel sick. Her heart kept pounding coldly.

Olivia kept playing with her hair and licking her lips with her tongue.

Even though she took sleeping pills, she couldn't fall asleep easily last night.

Surely, there will be students who sign up for her classes? Please, there should be.

Her white face was filled with worry.

As Olivia shivered and headed to school, the ship carrying Noah arrived at Pulder Harbor.

It was a journey that took exactly three weeks because it was a season when sea monsters appeared, so they took a detour instead of a straight route.

“Oh, it’s dazzling. The sunlight is different, different!”

Meson was sulking, his hands shading his eyes from the scorching summer sun of the Pulder.

“If it’s this hot at this time of year, what on earth will midsummer be like?”

Meson was very excited, either because he was excited to witness the Prince's proposal or because he was excited to get away from his work for a while.

Noah was not at all disturbed by Meson's fuss.

He frowned under the blazing sunlight and walked slowly in the direction his bodyguards led him.

The place they were headed to was the VIP immigration office, located a few minutes' walk from the dock.

The immigration office was in an uproar when news broke that Herod's Prince had visited.

The Vice President, under the President's direction, appeared in person at the office to welcome the Prince.

The dignified middle-aged gentleman stroked his beard as he gazed blankly at the unusual young man walking towards him, pushing his way through the crowd.

“As expected, Astrid is Astrid. Even from afar, he’s different.”

He whispered to his secretary, who was standing next to him, with a kind smile on his face.

"He's also the head of a Norfolk investment firm, right? What brings him to Pulder?"

"I'm guessing it's something to do with the company. I heard he invested a considerable amount of money in Wilhelm."

“I see.”

Even while talking to his secretary, the Vice President's gaze was fixed on Herod's young lion, who was approaching him.

A perfectly tailored suit, even in this heat, golden hair brushed back without a single strand out of place, and a demeanor worthy of a textbook example of etiquette.

He was the one who reduced everything around him to the background. As Vice President of the Pulder, he had seen countless royals, but Noah Astrid, who was walking toward him now, was different.

It seemed clear to everyone why Astrid's symbol was a lion.
