RAMBYM - Chapter 38

38. The worst bastard

Skinnell's nitpicking didn't end there.

Everything that had been building up exploded all at once, as if it had been waiting for an opportunity.

"But as we talked, I realized I wasn't the only one who'd been affected. The masseuse had a stiff shoulder and was banging his back against a tree while walking. He saw it and glared at me as if he was going to kill me. "No, the human body comes first. Is a tree that important? Are you saying I'm less important than a tree?" What are you talking about?"

You held back a lot... It must have been really noisy...

Diarin was struck by the many absurd things that had happened without her knowledge.

It was also surprising that Ceres didn't explode, but just gave a warning and moved on.

But as expected, it was a very sensitive issue for people to understand.

'If you can just glare at them and pass them by, aren't you almost perfectly normal?'

That was Diarin's assessment.

"At first, I was a little excited because he was so handsome and young, it was almost thrilling, but then, oh, shit. Everyone said the same thing. What good is a guy who looks so good when he's actually the worst kind of guy inside?"

The worst kind of bastard.

Diarin received Ceres's evaluation from a third party for the first time...

She was very satisfied.

'He's not a mad dog! He was treated like a human!'

It was touching.

That's beyond the level of madness that can only be described as crazy.

Diarin's heart swelled with emotion.

"Anyway, it was a bit strange to see the Priestess hanging around like a child. You must be such a good person, so I figured even that rascal would be hanging around, so I vented a bit. Did I talk too much?"

“No. We can easily share this level of hardship with colleagues.”

Diarin was so excited by the compliment that our puppy had become human that she was able to respond more compassionately.

"Ah, my goodness. As expected of you, my lady. Perhaps it's because you're kind-hearted. Your skin is truly beautiful. You truly are a beauty. It's such a shame that your beauty is obscured by your priestly attire."

“...You are too kind.”

If you look like a good person, your face will look pretty too.

Perhaps thanks to Skinell's generous praise, when she looked in the mirror after finishing her treatment, a girl was sitting there, so pale she seemed unfamiliar.

***

Ceres's sensitivity was a problem that would naturally resolve itself over time.

Diarin wasn't impatient about that part.

The speed so far was faster than Diarin expected.

However, apart from healing, the part that Diarin needed to educate became urgent.

“Mr. Ceres, people are people because they speak human language.”

"Yes."

“So you have to speak like a human being.”

"Yes."

Ceres answered without understanding at all.

“What Mr. Ceres is saying now is closer to barking.”

“...?”

As expected, he didn't understand.

Diarin read everything in Ceres's expression.

But everything has a beginning.

He quickly learned the concepts of "like" and "dislike." Now, he can even express "delicious" quite easily.

Now that you have a solid foundation, you will be able to quickly expand on the areas to which you apply it.

“So, we learned our letters.”

"Yes."

“Now let’s learn ‘writing.’”

Ceres has made excellent progress in the 'letter' itself.

He was better than Diarin at copying the book and writing it down.

The handwriting was so neat and smooth that anyone who saw it would think it was a manuscript by a calligrapher.

But the problem was that he just drew the letters without knowing what they meant.

“I’ve been putting it off until now because I’m just trying to calm down and see what’s urgent right now, but I think it’s time to start now.”

If it's data, it's overflowing.

There are mountains of books that Robben brought.

From textbooks, basic knowledge, to fairy tales.

No matter how much background you have in the military, you won't be able to participate in a conversation without at least some knowledge.

“Actually, I don’t think this is urgent right now, but....”

The reason Diarin had put off studying liberal arts until now was that she thought it wasn't her role.

As a priest, she learned the manners of dealing with nobles, but as a noble, she did not learn the manners of being active in high society.

Because she was busy assigning her brother a liberal arts teacher, Diarin didn't get a chance to learn.

Anyway, she was sent straight to the temple without any time to be active in social circles, so she didn't have any need to learn.

'I don't even know how to teach.'

That was the original reason.

But words are precious.

She thought that even if you don't go as far as advanced speaking, you can say that you've made a person by teaching them a variety of expressions.

'I've already been recognized as a human being.'

Diarin shrugged her shoulders for no reason and nodded her head firmly.

Now that he's become a human, let's make him speak like a human!

“Let’s start by studying vocabulary.”

There is a big difference between knowing something and not using it and not being able to use it because you don't know.

Diarin opened the book.

There is a limit to the number of words they use in everyday life.

Rather than trying to come up with words that you don't normally use but should know, Diarin decided that it would be more effective to just read books and memorize every word in the world.

“This is a book called ‘The Red House in the Mountains.’”

Diarin picked out a random book from the “100 Best Children’s Books” that Robben had brought her.

Ceres sat close to Diarin and looked at the book together.

“This is a red house in the mountains.”

Diarin pointed to each letter with her finger.

“In the mountains. Red. House.”

Ceres repeated what Diarin said.

Her face was right next to his as he looked at the book, so his breath touched her cheek every time he spoke.

Diarin turned around briefly at the ticklish feeling.

The side profile of Ceres' face was visible, concentrating on the letters.

“...”

Diarin felt like she was ticklish for no reason, so she rubbed her cheek with her sleeve and turned her eyes back to the book.

“...was dazzling in the blue sky.”

“In the blue sky, dazzling?”

“Yeah, dazzling.”

“Dazzling?”

Some words are difficult to understand just by reading them literally.

Ceres tilted his head and repeated, as if he had never heard the word before.

“Uh, so, it’s not like my eyes get sore from looking at something too bright or anything, um. What is it?”

Diarin, who was trying to explain somehow, was driven into a dead end.

Although she had the linguistic ability to read and interpret scriptures, it was a different skill to be able to accurately explain the meaning of every word as if in a dictionary.

The priests in charge of the doctrine classes at the shrine explain things so well that people can understand them...

It wasn't easy for Diarin, who had never been in charge of that kind of work before.

“Let’s just experience it.”

Experience speaks louder than words.

Diarin stood up, holding the book in one hand and Ceres's hand in the other.

Now, a gardener comes in and does some garden tidying up from time to time.

The garden, which was gradually becoming a natural forest without human intervention, was neatly organized.

“They even made something like this here?”

When did you make this?

Diarin was amazed as she passed through the tunnel made of rose vines.

“This is a rose vine.”

“Rose vine.”

Ceres looked closely at the rose.

You won't see flowers on the battlefield.

Even the wild flowers that bloom by chance are trampled by the feet of horses and soldiers.

There is no opportunity to grow such large and beautiful flowers.

“Isn’t it pretty?”

When Ceres couldn't take his eyes off her for a long time, Diarin smiled and asked.

“Pretty...”

“Yeah, the flowers are pretty. That’s what I mean by pretty.”

"Pretty."

Ceres followed suit.

But she doesn't think he fully understood what 'pretty' meant.

“Hmm...”

Diarin looked around the garden.

There were colorful flowers and trees of all shapes everywhere.

“This flower is a Rowan flower. The color is so pretty.”

“Rowan flower.”

Ceres repeated the words as if he was hearing them for the first time.

“But, don’t you know much about poisonous plants?”

"Yes."

Suddenly, she was struck by the thought that she didn't really know where Ceres' knowledge began and ended.

Rather than teaching from beginning to end without any preparation, a level test was needed.

“Do you know the name of anything in this garden?”

Ceres took a close look at what was visible.

“Red deer tree.”

“Oh, right.”

The red deer tree was often used as a garden tree because its leaves were large and did not fall easily.

You can easily see this tree wherever you go, so even children know its name.

“If you burn the root bark, it becomes poisonous.”

"...Yes?"

This kind of detailed knowledge is not known.

Even Diarin was hearing this information for the first time.

“Look... at that.”

Diarin hurriedly opened the book she had brought and turned the pages.

The red deer tree also appears in the book.

"Here, here. 'Sunlight sparkling through the broad leaves of the red deer tree. It was a symbol of summer.' When you think of the red deer tree, you usually think of summer sunshine."

"Yes."

Ceres simply accepted Diarin's words without comment.

No, this isn't it...

Diarin took Ceres' hand and walked directly under the red deer tree.

It's still a long way from summer, but today was a beautiful day.

“Look up.”

The sunlight streaming through the leaves sparkled like tiny sparks.

Every time a gentle breeze blew, the direction of the light changed, sparkling brightly here and there.

It was a sight that could be seen all the time, but at some point, Diarin's gaze was stolen.
