THST - Chapter 34

Episode 34. Just Got Divorced

Pregnancy? Rose expected it, but she didn't know it would happen this quickly.

'You seem strangely confident today.'

Doana, who usually played the fox, always keeping an eye on Rose, now seemed to think she had the upper hand. Holding her child, she was already intoxicated with victory, like someone wielding the flag of victory. Her face, still covered in makeup, was still hideous. She had gauze covering one cheek, but it was clear at first glance that it wasn't a blemish that would easily heal.

"Did Eric say he'd heal you completely? You're so calm, unlike back then when you were causing a scene."

Indeed, Doana hadn't taken her wounds too seriously. Perhaps it was because she hadn't yet grasped the differences between modern medicine and modern medicine. And what mattered to her now was not her skin, but her child. Worrying about her skin was something she could have done after she'd kicked out Rose.

"You were bragging about your boyfriend like that. Congratulations. Does he know you're pregnant?"

At Rose's words, a smile twitched across Doana's face, ready to burst out at any moment. "Yeah, it would be funny. Congratulating your husband and the pregnant woman." Doana forced herself to hide her smirk and raised her head.

"Yeah. I told him, and he really liked it. He said he'd marry me. He said he'd make sure to tell his wife."

"I see he already has a wife. Well, the 'concubine' system is common in this world. People usually refer to them as 'government.' Good. Don't be so embarrassed by your actions. I don't know about Korea, but here, having an affair isn't really a bad thing."

Rose spoke to Doana with a strangely sarcastic tone. There was no way Doana wouldn't notice. She quirked her eyebrows haughtily and leaned back.

“The government...”

At Rose's words, Doana trailed off slightly, her eyes half-closed as she spoke. "Can you really be so complacent after knowing the whole truth?"

'Ugh, you'll probably cry while squeezing out all the tears and snot.'

Doana wanted Rose, who had been feigning arrogance, to crumble before her. It was such a pleasure to take something from someone who seemed happy. Doana couldn't hide her excitement at something that hadn't even happened yet, and she swayed her hips.

“Well... he said he would give me the position of ‘Countess’, not government.”

She raised the corners of her mouth and looked at Rose with a provocative gaze. "Well, I've given you a hint. What will your expression be when you hear 'Countess'?" Doana, who was staring at Rose with a maddening gaze, continued speaking.

"Actually, I was skeptical. I'm just a 'maid'. A Countess is more than enough for me."

Doana rose from her seat and slowly approached Rose. She walked behind Rose, grabbed her shoulder, and stared into the mirror in front of her. Rose, in her gorgeous dress, and Doana, in her rough uniform, were reflected. Doana stroked Rose's dress and spoke softly.

“Will you congratulate me on my wedding?”

Her face almost hardened at the word 'congratulations'. You say it exactly the same way, without a single word being off. Just like that day...

Rose gritted her teeth as she recalled the past. In her previous life, the woman who had betrayed her and smiled brightly while saying that she was pregnant with her husband's child was still as disgusting as ever. Eric and the like. She didn't care whether he was with Doana or not. But the anger at experiencing the same thing again didn't easily subside.

A surge of emotion washed over her. Memories of the past swept back like waves. Rose glared at Doana with cold eyes. She shouldn't be swept away. She shouldn't be...

“My husband, is he the child of Count Wence?”

Anger wasn't easily controlled. Doana felt a thrill as she watched Rose get excited, just as she had imagined. Yes, this was exactly the feeling she had been wanting to experience for a long time. She desperately wanted to destroy Rose.

Doana nodded, neither surprised nor apologetic, with a look of happiness greater than anyone else's, asking how she knew. Rose's expression as she looked at Doana was terrifyingly hardened. She wanted to smile and leave cleanly, but it just wouldn't work. Seeing that expression twice and just letting it go...

'Fool.'

Rose vowed to no longer live the life of a swindler. She slowly lifted her now-cold teacup. She stood up and poured the remaining tea over Doana's head without hesitation.

“Gyaaak!”

As the damp tea soaked her body, she screamed for the mansion to leave. It was something she'd never done in her previous life. Back then, she'd been speechless, just crying like a fool and running away.

'I should have done this back then.'

For three years, she regretted it again and again in that cramped studio apartment. She should have grabbed her by the hair instead of running away, or at least slapped her in the face. It was incredibly comforting to be able to repay that debt, even if it was just this way. Rose looked coldly at Doana, who trembled like a drowning rat.

"Don't you feel sorry for me? That man is my husband. You're flirting with Eric without me knowing. A person should at least say sorry."

Doana jumped up from her seat. Wearing high heels, she was at least ten centimeters taller than Rose and looked down at her as she shouted.

"Huh? What are you doing? You're not even in love with him anyway. You just got lucky and ended up as a Countess!"

Crack! As soon as Doana finished speaking, her face turned to the right. Doana caressed her cold cheek. Judging by her expression, she hadn't expected to be hit by Rose. Her eyes widened as she raised her hand toward Rose.

"This!"

Rose lightly subdued Doana's arm as it tried to strike her face. Then, she struck Doana's face once more, still flustered.

"Ah!"

I got hit not once, but twice!

Doana lost her balance and stumbled under Rose's touch, which was sharper than the first time. Wearing high heels over ten centimeters high, she let out a single scream and fell to the floor. She couldn't just take this. She glared at Rose with venom. Doana looked around, trying to counterattack. She thought that since she had been slapped, she would do worse to Rose. Doana's vision turned to a kettle of water, still boiling hot. If she were to pour that scalding water on Rose's face...!

As Doana, filled with vicious thoughts, tried to move, Rose's door burst open.

“What’s all the fuss about?”

It was Eric. Doana, whose face had been blazing with anger, changed the moment Eric entered. Her eyes were filled with clear tears. Now that Eric was here, she had to change her strategy. Doana clutched her stomach as if to show off and pitifully called his name.

“Eric...”

“Doana!”

Eric lifted Doana up, her face weeping pitifully. Seeing her swollen cheeks and wet hair, he felt a surge of anger. Blinded by jealousy, she had gone to such lengths! Doana was carrying his own child, a precious life he had not been able to obtain during his marriage to Rose. Eric glared at Rose with a fierce gaze.

“What are you doing?”

Perhaps it was because she was so feverish that she was out of her mind. It was the first time in her life that she hit someone. But she doesn't particularly regret it.

“My hand slipped.”

Rose shrugged at Eric. Doana glared at her and said,

“I told her I was pregnant with the Count’s child. I guess she was very angry...”

Unlike the poisonous gaze, the voice was faint.

“How shameless. To tell such an obvious lie.”

Hearing Doana's words, Eric glared at Rose. Why are cheaters so alike? Who's so shameless? He held Doana, who was carrying his child, tightly in his arms and glared at Rose.

“Congratulations. You’re about to become the father you’ve always wanted to be.”

“Yeah. You haven’t done that in years.”

He looked at Rose with a pitiful look. Then he continued with barbed words.

“You can’t even take care of yourself properly, so you end up having a miscarriage. And even after all that...!”

Crack! Before Eric could finish his sentence, Rose hit him hard in the face.

'You bastard, how can you say something like that to a woman you've been with for three years!'

Even though she hadn't miscarried, she was overcome with anger. Even so, Eric, who was his husband, had said such cruel things, and it was horrifying.

‘It’s all because of someone that I miscarried my child...!’

The original Rose had done nothing wrong. She had a miscarriage because she witnessed Eric cheating with her own eyes. Her only fault was that she loved that damned Eric so madly. Eric clutched his cheek, which had turned to his right, and let out a laugh, as if he'd been dumbfounded.

“Let’s get a divorce. I don’t want to spend even a moment with a woman like you.”

A faint smile appeared on Doana's face at the word 'divorce'.

'I was going to threaten you and kick you out if you kept getting sloppy, but our Count took care of it for me.'

Rose met Doana's eyes as she was held in Eric's arms. Instead of avoiding Rose's gaze, she smiled.

“Yes. I’m getting a divorce.”

Eric's eyes fluttered at Rose's immediate nod.

'I thought you were going to get on your knees and beg...?'

She should have been sobbing, begging him to please just look at her once, saying she was wrong, that she couldn't live without him... Rose's reaction was somehow strange. Eric glanced at her with a look of disbelief.

“What did you eat wrong? Why are you so confident?”

“You don’t love me anyway. Do you know that I’ve been seeing this woman and that woman every day?”

Doana's face hardened slightly at Rose's words. She seemed quite repulsed by the idea of her man, who had committed adultery, seeing another woman.

“Don’t you know that even in the womb, a baby can hear? There’s nothing you can’t say in front of a baby.”

"I didn't say anything wrong, did I? I was just stating the truth."

Rose slowly approached Eric, then looked him in the eye and spoke.

“I can’t say congratulations, but thank you. I really wanted to divorce you.”

"What?"

At Rose's words, Eric looked as if he had been hit in the head with a hammer.

'... Is this woman crazy? You want to live without me?'

When you were so desperately clinging to me that you'd marry me, don't you even remember that time you threatened suicide, saying you couldn't live without me? Eric wondered if Rose's words were simply a fit of jealousy. She must have said that in a fit of anger because Doana had his child.

“I’ll have the maid bring my luggage.”

"For a moment."

Eric grabbed Rose as she was about to leave. Doana, who was in his arms, flinched nervously.

"What, why are you calling Rose? You're not saying... you're going to push back on the divorce, are you?"

Doana, who was already feeling incredibly relieved that everything was going as planned, felt a pang of nervousness at Eric's voice. However, her worries proved completely unfounded.

"I need to get the divorce papers stamped before I go. Did you think I didn't know you were planning to leave me like this and then come back to haunt me?"

Rose slowly turned around at Eric's words. She looked straight into his eyes and answered gently.

"That's good to hear. I really don't want anything to do with 'that guy' anymore."

Eric's face twisted in bewilderment at the word 'that guy'.

“I’ll watch how long your pride lasts.”

"Oh my, why are you still watching me now that we're divorced? I wish you wouldn't pay attention to me."

He chuckled at Rose's brash attitude.

"Yeah, keep nagging me like that. It won't do you any good. If you want to get even a penny more in compensation, you'd better be on my good side until the very end."

"Now that you have nothing left to threaten, are you threatening with money?" Rose sighed at his sullen attitude.

'I'm truly glad I joined hands with Grand Duke Artaeum. Otherwise, I might have had to say things I didn't mean to get compensation from that rotten bastard.'

"Yes. I don't need alimony. I have plenty of money, too."

Of course, she hadn't received it yet, but she was due to receive it soon. Rose spoke confidently, her back straight. And with those words, she left her room. Her face was filled with a smile as she left. She felt relieved. The woman who had cried over being taken away by her husband was no longer there. Rose stamped the documents Eric had prepared.

The servants stared at Rose as she said her final goodbyes, at a loss. Many of them held her hand with tears in their eyes. To them, it must have seemed as if Rose was being kicked out without a doubt. Rose greeted them with the brightest expression she could muster, then looked around.

‘Where did Sir Serun and Jane go...’

She wanted to say her final goodbyes, but she couldn't find them. Rose, eager to leave the mansion as soon as possible, left each of them a short note. On the other hand, she felt it would be better to leave without seeing each other. It would be heartbreaking to see Jane run away in tears. Requesting that they deliver the notes to them, she left the mansion.

“It’s the perfect weather for a divorce.”

Leaving the mansion, Rose basked in the warm sunlight and muttered to herself. Eric hadn't given Rose a penny as she left, let alone a carriage. Rose was being rude or something. As a noble, she would have felt shamed if something like this had happened, but Rose, from Korea, wasn't. She enjoyed jogging, especially on a nice day like today. The downtown area was very close to the Count's residence. If she could just walk a little, she could probably sell the jewels on her dress to make enough for the train fare.

“Um, I feel a little dizzy...”

Since yesterday, her body had been feeling a bit chilly, making her steps quite heavy. Rose took each step carefully. She felt a fever rising from her head, but it was manageable. Raised by parents who insisted she go to school even when she was sick, she had always received perfect attendance awards throughout her school years. So she knew she could handle this one just as well. "Yeah, just a little more effort. First, sell the jewelry and use the money to buy medicine."

“...The ground here is really bumpy.”

Rose muttered in vain, clutching her staggering body. She hadn't walked very far, yet beads of sweat were forming on her forehead. She looked around with a pale expression. Before she knew it, she was in a busy downtown area.

“Here... where is the jewelry store?”

A familiar face appeared in front of Rose, who was wandering around.

“Huh...?”

Even though he was wearing a robe, he was clearly visible. Luminous platinum hair and sapphire-blue eyes. It was undoubtedly the Grand Duke of Artaeum. Rose rubbed her bleary eyes and waved to him. Why did the usually intimidating Grand Duke of Artaeum feel so welcoming today? The Grand Duke saw Rose waving to him, then approached her.

'Countess Wence? Traveling alone, without an escort.'

Rose muttered to herself as she saw the person approaching her.

“As expected, it was the Grand Duke of Arteum.”

The Grand Duke, who had come closer, stared blankly at Rose.

“You look happy.”

He asked Rose, probing her every detail, why she was alone. Rose, as if she had been waiting, answered his question.

“I just got divorced.”

Rose smiled, her white teeth revealing a remarkably carefree expression. However, with those words, she lost consciousness. Her limp body slumped forward. The Grand Duke caught Rose's limp body.

“...Madam Wence?”

He looked at Rose, who was lying in his arms, with wavering eyes.
