Without Fear - Chapter 74

Episode 74. Lacrahan's Body Temperature

Following her gaze, lightning struck from the sky.

The men looked around in bewilderment as lightning suddenly descended from the clear sky.

"What? Why are you doing this?"

Bercheria glared at the men with cold eyes.

"Put her down."

The men murmured in confusion.

"What is she saying? That woman."

"Ha."

She had merely created a single bolt of lightning, but she felt a sudden surge of power within her.

It felt like a different current than before.

The difference in power was incomparable.

Now that she had regained all her strength, she was convinced that if she used it without a trace, she could die.

But when she asked herself again, the answer remained the same.

Without saving Groovy, she wouldn't be able to move forward, even as Bercheria.

Lightning struck again from the sky.

"Damn it."

As the men looked confused, Groovy shouted, his face pale.

“No! Don’t do that! You can’t do that!”

As Groovy struggled to escape, a large man struck his temple with his fist, knocking him unconscious.

The leader of the group, carrying Groovy on his shoulder, shouted at his men.

“If that damn lightning strikes, we can just go inside the cave, right? Puhahahaha.”

At his words, the worried faces of his colleagues instantly brightened.

“Hey. As expected of the leader.”

“Why didn’t I think of that! Why would lightning come inside!”

“Good! No laundry today! Yay!”

Just as they were about to walk towards the cave, Krrrrung!

Mu blocked their path, barking fiercely.

“Hey, you! Aren’t you going away?”

One of the men was about to kick Mu.

“Stop it.”

At Bercheria’s words, the men shouted fiercely this time.

“Aren’t you going away quickly?”

“Don’t you know how scary people are!”

Bercheria’s eyes closed.

Kkua-kwa-kwa-kwa!

A tremendous sound, like the sky was falling, erupted, and lightning struck all the men's heads at the same time.

"Ugh!"

"Keuk!"

"Ah!"

Compared to the loud noises up until then, the ending was short and concise.

All the men fainted on the floor at the same time.

"Cough."

Bercheria approached them and shook Groovy, who was also unconscious.

She dragged Groovy, who was shaking with Bercheria's movements, and slung Groovy, who was about the same size, over her shoulder and walked forward, whimpering.

A few steps like that.

Bercheria, who had been walking forward, suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed.

Kukwagwagwang!

Lacrahan, who was preying on prey, jumped to his feet at the sudden sound of thunder.

He looked up at the sky, but where he was, it was clear and bright without a single cloud.

As he looked around, Lacrahan noticed dark clouds gathering in the distance and gritted his teeth.

He threw down the prey he was holding and ran towards the gathering dark clouds.

"Bercheria!"

When he arrived, all he saw were men, blackened and unconscious.

Lacrahan's heart pounded.

"Bercheria! Groovy!"

Bang bang!

The barking of a wild dog was heard ahead.

As Lacrahan ran, Mu, who had been waiting in the middle, turned around and started running at full speed.

Lakrahan followed Mu.

When they reached the cave he had mentioned, Bercheria lay unconscious on the ground.

Meanwhile, Groovy, who had briefly regained consciousness, was massaging her limbs.

Tears welled up in Groovy's eyes at the thought that this was his fault.

"What should I do, Grand Duke? Sob."

Lacrahan's face darkened with despair.

"Sister, sister won't come to her senses. Sob."

Her body, out of control, arrived in someone's warm, spacious embrace.

'... Who is it?'

In this situation, she should have felt fear or dread, but strangely, no such emotions arose.

Just...

'It's warm.'

It was so warm.

The warmth was so warm. A mixture of relief and anxiety, as if she'd longed for this her entire life.

Only the pounding of his heart remained in Bercheria's ears.

A beating so loud and intense it couldn't even compare to her own.

"I need to wake up, but..."

Contrary to her thoughts, her mind drifted further and further into a distant place.

Her mother came to mind. Was this person, like her mother, trying to trap her, beat her, or torment her?

Perhaps so. Because her very existence would make her feel terrible.

No one could love her, her mother had always told her, so deeply ingrained in her bones.

But this feeling was familiar. She really needed to remember this warmth.

Because he was the first person to love her after escaping the darkness.

Because he was the first person to cherish her.

Yes, she had to go to that man, Lacrahan.

From deep within, she beckoned.

For so long, what sustained Bercheria was her tenacity, her unwavering hope.

"Brother. Please. Sob. Please save my sister."

She could hear sounds, but she couldn't move.

The divine power to protect humans was actually closer to a curse than a blessing.

The Awakened lived human lives, but they couldn't live like humans.

Being possessed by the divine power and losing consciousness was commonplace, and in severe cases, they would never awaken.

Furthermore, because they naturally learned from the lives of past Awakened, they had no expectations for human relationships.

Having a protective ability, whatever it was, wasn't much of a blessing.

Even if those without it envied it, they only saw its advantages.

As time passed, the human population grew, and the protective power grew, leading to repeated deaths of the Awakened.

So, the Supreme Being created and gifted a divine object to protect the spirits of the poor Awakened so they wouldn't lose their lives in vain.

Unlike other divine objects, it was designed to transform into whatever shape the Awakened wanted, and its affinity was enhanced to ensure it would adapt easily to any Awakened.

In fact, the object the Supreme Being paid the most attention to was none other than Bercheria's divine object.

Among the guardian gods, she possessed unparalleled power, earning her the Supreme Being's favor.

Weather, by its very nature, is extremely changeable and demanding, requiring the most energy.

For this very reason, it was also the cause of the deaths of the most Awakened.

At some point, Bercheria began selecting only the purest and strongest genes to protect her Awakened.

Fortunately, this wasn't difficult.

The most powerful and beautiful beings on Earth were already chosen.

Beautiful blonde hair, golden eyes, and a fragrant scent that could be smelled from afar.

Bercheria always chose her Awakened from among those with blonde hair and golden eyes, and as a supplement, she stayed close to the Adkins family, possessing the properties of ice, to protect herself.

Finally, the Supreme Being gifted them with a divine object that controlled their power, ensuring that no Awakened would die before their time.

During this era of peace, Bercheria's staff became so famous that it became synonymous with her.

No matter how powerful Bercheria became over the centuries, it remained uncontrollable without the divine object.

In fact, the more powerful they became, the more likely they were to go mad or die.

He had to remember that even a moment of carelessness could cost him her life.

“Bercheria!”

Lacrahan cradled her limp body in his arms.

“Damn it!”

Holding Bercheria, he mentally calculated the remaining distance to the border.

Even if he ran with all his might and shaved off half a day, it would only take a day.

Even if he got there, he couldn’t guarantee how long it would take to figure out how to merge the divine beings as described in the book.

“She's not dead, is she?”

Groovy ran behind Lacrahan, wiping away tears.

He slowly stopped running, looking at Groovy.

“Sigh. Why, why? Why are you stopping?”

“Haa.”

Lacrahan placed Bercheria on the ground, as if he had given up everything.

But his eyes sparkled, as if he had given up on nothing.
