Episode 66. Can You Do It?
Lacrahan raised his eyebrows and then laughed.
“Yes. You’re a smart child.”
He reached out and brushed back the stray hairs from Bercheria’s forehead.
“You’ve grown up well, too. Even after all this time, you still retain the characteristics of a noble lineage. Everyone desires you.”
“...What do you mean?”
Lacrahan closed his eyes for a moment, then looked at her and said.
“Bercheria. Take this child to the border village. You’ll learn everything there. Can you do it?”
Bercheria blinked, unable to answer.
“You’ll find your staff there, and everything for Lacrahan.”
“Just a moment. Will you find my staff there? And will Lacrahan be unharmed?”
“You’ll find out soon enough,”
He said, lightly brushing Bercheria’s hair.
“I’m sorry I shared the staff. I’ll make it up to you later, Berche.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Lacrahan’s eyes fluttered shut.
Then, with a weak thud, he landed on top of her.
“Lacrahan?”
Bercheria shook his shoulder with her hand.
“Lacrahan, wake up. Lacrahan!”
His forehead was still blazing hot, and no matter how hard she shook, he wouldn’t come to his senses.
“Lacrahan!”
Bercheria suddenly felt afraid.
What if this man never came to his senses?
She didn’t know what those strange words meant, but her heart was pounding anxiously.
“Lacrahan!”
Bark, bark!
That was it. Bercheria’s eyes widened at the sudden sound of a stray dog at the door.
Knock, knock!
The sound of the dog scratching and barking at the door.
The image of the stray dog panting and drooling seemed imaginable.
As the door shook with a jolt, Bercheria supported Lacrahan, who was lying on top of her.
“Lacrahan, please!”
But she couldn't move his body even a little.
Rattle.
The door shook as if it were about to open, and then...
BUZZ!
With a blast of cold air, wild dogs rushed into the cabin, gaping open and tearing at the two of them.
"Huh!"
Bercheria's eyes widened in surprise.
Lacrahan, who had been sleeping above her, was breathing heavily, his brow furrowed.
The two looked at each other, sharing the same feeling.
BUZZ!
When a faint barking sound was heard from afar, the two looked at each other without a word.
The snow that had fallen overnight had transformed the north into a white snowfield.
A pack of wild dogs and Groovy led the way. As the dirty dogs sniffed around and barked, the boy followed briskly.
As Groovy moved, the carriage carrying the Emperor and his mistress, Lyone, moved with him.
Lyone, swaying from side to side, was swayed by the rattling carriage.
Gerard stared at Lyone for a moment, then asked with narrowed eyes,
“Back then, when we first met.”
Lyone’s shoulders trembled at the Emperor’s words.
“Do you remember?”
Lyone smiled brightly and turned to Gerard, revealing her ample chest.
“When are you talking about that enemy? I don’t even remember anymore.”
Gerard lightly stroked his chin.
“I sometimes wonder. Where is the child you said you had back then?”
Gerard spoke tentatively, studying Lyone’s face.
She maintained the same expression, not showing any sign of shock.
“Your Majesty. From then on, I only have you, Your Majesty. I would do anything to be by your side like this.”
Gerard’s lips twitched at the desperate confession.
“Because to me, you are the most wonderful person in the world.”
When she lowered her head and leaned against his lap, Gerard stroked Lyone’s soft brown hair.
When he murdered his brothers and parents and ascended to the throne, not only the imperial family but everyone in the country reviled him. Even though he sat on the throne he so desperately desired, he was filled with frustration and was unhappy.
But Lyone had healed all of that.
Wouldn't the best woman for a man be one who respects him?
Whether he's an Emperor or a commoner. The kind of woman men desire is always the same.
Bark, bark!
Suddenly, wild dogs began barking noisily.
And Dylan, riding right next to the carriage, approached and said,
"A small cabin. I think Bercheria and Lacrahan are here."
Gerard's lips stretched out.
"Ha. Finally."
The Bercheria he'd always dreamed of was now before his eyes.
Gerard opened the carriage door and got out.
"Ha."
Amidst the forest, a picturesque white snowfield stood a large tree.
Gray smoke billowed from the chimney in the middle of the tree, as if it had been dug into the cabin.
"How cute."
Gerard smiled and walked toward it.
When Groovy cleared the dogs away, Gerard hummed and opened the door.
"Bercheria?"
A warm warmth permeated the cabin.
And a sweet scent.
"Tsk."
Gerard filled his lungs with the smell.
No matter how much he thought about it, he couldn't give up Bercheria.
After all this, what would be left if I gave up?
What had I lived for?
Gerard would either bring Bercheria and imprison her, or seat her and treat her like a goddess, or give her a place where the people would respect her.
Either way, he was determined to bring her to his side.
There was no harm in making up that excuse later.
"Bercheria!"
Gerard stood in the middle of the hut, furrowing his brow and glancing around.
"Where is she?"
There was clear evidence of the two of them having been here just moments ago.
"Where is Bercheria?"
The narrow hut, where everyone could see at a glance, was empty.
And he'd been chasing after them, never even getting a proper look at their faces.
Why on earth?!
"Why can't you find one woman?"
The Emperor grabbed everything he could and started throwing it at Groovy and Dylan, who were standing at the entrance.
As if that wasn't enough, he walked up close and kicked them carelessly.
"Eeeeeeeee!"
Gerard felt like he was going crazy with anger.
“You’re throwing a tantrum.”
Lacrahan ran his hand through his hair, which was throbbing with a headache.
The two people who had climbed atop the tree where the cabin was located were peeking out, watching Gerard’s outburst.
It was a close call.
Hearing the barking of a wild dog, the two climbed up the tree instead of running outside.
“Hey, Lacrahan.”
“Yes.”
“You said you were going to a village in the border region?”
Ah, the border region.
He thinks he definitely organized his to-do list this morning.
He thought about the village in the border region he saw in the library, and he thought about making Bercheria breakfast.
Then, startled by his pain, he's rushed over.
Lacrahan grabbed Bercheria’s chin, a forgotten memory flashing back to him.
“Blood... I saw you vomit blood this morning. Are you okay?”
His dark eyes were fixed on her as usual.
Deep and dark, so black that not a single light could penetrate.
They were eyes that brought comfort to those who saw them.
“It’s okay. I didn’t vomit blood. I just bit the flesh inside my mouth.”
She tried to smile, but Lacrahan didn’t seem to understand.
He was still looking at Bercheria, his face full of worry.
Embarrassed, she turned her head away from Lacrahan’s hand.
Beneath the tree, Gerard and his party were just leaving.
“Lacrahan. That border village.”
Bercheria resumed the conversation she had left unfinished.
“Yeah.”
“Let’s go from there.”
As Bercheria turned to climb down, Lacrahan pulled forward, blocking her path.
“Why are you avoiding my eyes?”
Bercheria looked down and shook her head.
The voice from her conversation, still stroking her belly, lingered.
She couldn’t make out the details, but she had said the child inside her was the first Adkins, born with the blood of both gods and humans.
Bercheria searched through the memories of the Awakened, but found nothing special other than the mutual support they had shared with the ice-attributed Edkins family.
They were always sincere, and the Bercherias trusted the Edkins family.
That was all.
Nothing like this had ever happened while the Edkins family and the Bercherias had coexisted.
“Bercheria.”
“Ah.”
Bercheria, lost in thought, strained her eyes and looked at Lacrahan.
She didn’t know what he was thinking, suggesting they go to the border village.
Nor did she know why the ancient ancestor who had appeared in his body had urged her there.
But the important thing was that her heart was telling her to go there.
Something unknown was drawing Bercheria to that village.
“I’m sorry. I was just thinking. It’s an unfamiliar village, so should I go or should I avoid it?”
If you think about why the border region still has such a poor and desolate life, the reason lies in public safety.
In most places where borders were adjacent or overlapping, they either postponed and neglected the matter or fought over who would take it.
It was understandable why Bercheria hesitated to go.
“Don’t worry. I’ll protect you.”
Bercheria nodded with an awkward smile.
Lacrahan grabbed her chin and gently pulled her toward him. He tried to lock lips with her, but this time Bercheria didn’t dodge.
Lacrahan gently pressed their lips together.
The sweet scent and the smoothness of her hidden flesh were transmitted to him through his sensitive senses.
As he gently stroked the inside of her small mouth, he felt her hand tense.
Was it tension, or dislike?
“...Bercheria.”
Lacrahan briefly parted his lips and looked into her eyes.
“Do you dislike it?”
He asked gently, and she raised her head, her eyes wide.
“No!”
Lacrahan narrowed his eyes, as if it were a strong denial.
"If you don't like it, tell me. I really hate forced kisses and such."
"Lacrahan. I told you, that's not it."
"Yes, I understand."
As Lacrahan turned and tried to stand, Bercheria grabbed him by the collar.
She pressed her lips against Lacrahan's surprised lips and pulled him closer to her.
Their warm breaths tangled together, and Lacrahan gently explored Bercheria's insides.
Lacrahan raised his eyebrows and then laughed.
“Yes. You’re a smart child.”
He reached out and brushed back the stray hairs from Bercheria’s forehead.
