Queen of Villains - Chapter 3

The carriage glided into the Starr mansion.

The mansion was purchased from a castle once occupied by a Duke. The exterior walls, though old, possessed a solid, antique charm. Even the entrance, with its statues seemingly supporting the roof, exuded a sense of solemnity and grandeur.

"It is an honor to serve you, Madam. I am Alvin, your butler."

Outside the mansion, dozens of servants, including the butler, came out to greet them.

Emily was worried that the workers might be members of a mafia, but fortunately, judging by their appearance and attire, they seemed like ordinary people, and she secretly sighed in relief.

“Please take good care of me, too.”

She got off the carriage escorted by Killian, was greeted by the servants, and then followed the butler into the mansion.

As she enters the central hall through the entrance, which was deliberately darkened to create contrast, she is greeted by a space decorated so extravagantly that she cannot help but marvel.

In particular, the ceiling painting was painted in three-dimensional form, making it seem as if the figures in the painting were alive and moving.

“Huh.”

Emily, who was climbing the stairs while looking around, stopped for a moment because her knee, which had just been bumped in the carriage, felt numb.

'Ugh! Don't fall.'

A repeat of the previous situation was out of the question. Emily forced herself to act calm as she walked.

But Killian, who was watching from behind, frowned and muttered as if something was bothering him.

“I guess it wasn’t okay earlier.”

Emily was nervous that he might tell the butler about her injury.

Just as she turned around and was about to whisper in Killian's ear, asking him to pretend not to know her.

“What, what is this!”

The moment Emily approached, Killian immediately picked her up. Butler Alvin turned his head away, pretending not to notice, and cleared his throat.

Emily glanced at the butler, then lowered her voice again and spoke to Killian.

“Please get off right now. People will see.”

“It’s nothing to worry about.”

“People criticize me for being rude.”

“There’s no need to show off here. And no one has the nerve to insult me.”

Alvin nodded quickly beside her, but Emily didn't have the presence of mind to see it.

“Still, this is...”

“I’m busy and need to go up quickly, so please be patient.”

It was said that it was difficult to wait for Emily's steps.

Unable to find any more rebuttal to his brazen remark, Emily pursed her lips. The chandelier and ceiling painting, visible amidst this, were breathtakingly beautiful.

Killian, who carried Emily up to the door, only let her down after entering the room. Despite his blunt demeanor, his hand was extremely cautious as he lowered her.

Emily, safely down on the floor, looked around the bedroom. One wall was adorned with a massive tapestry, while the other three walls were covered in expensive leather wallpaper.

It was a luxurious but not frivolous room; rather, it was elegant and classy.

“If you come to the market, I will prepare a meal for you right away.”

Killian shook his head at Alvin's words.

“I have to go out now, so bring the food to my room.”

“No, I’m not that hungry either.”

When both refused, Alvin offered to set a tea table for his Madam instead. Feeling sorry for being the only one lounging around, Emily asked what Killian was busy with.

"It's about a new business. You can rest or take a look around the mansion."

Emily was briefly offended by Killian's nonchalant tone, but soon realized that this was exactly what she had been hoping for.

“Yes, have a nice trip.”

Emily's greeting was quite insincere, and Killian could tell that Emily was upset because of him.

But Killian, already quite late, really didn't have time to talk to her. He hesitated for a moment, as if he had something to say to Emily, but eventually he sighed and left the door.

"Even though the master may seem cold, he is a very kind person. Please don't be too upset."

Emily's face flushed slightly at the butler's soothing words, worried that her expression might be visible in front of Killian. She cleared her throat and changed the subject.

“But is this room mine or the master bedroom?”

"This is Madam's room. The master instructed us to change the furniture and curtains to suit your taste, so for now, we've kept the furniture to a bare minimum."

The room was already stylishly furnished, in keeping with the current fashion. It seemed like all that was needed was a few more pieces of furniture.

“And the master’s room is located next to the Madam's bedroom.”

The butler opened the door to the passageway that led to the master bedroom and showed her.

“...I see.”

Even the most loving couples, nobles, kept their rooms on separate floors or far apart. Their rooms being right next to each other likely stemmed from a mistake made by someone unfamiliar with aristocratic culture.

...I guess it was a mistake?

“There’s another interesting device that leads to the next room. Shall I show you?”

“No, it’s okay.”

There was absolutely no way Emily would have gone to the next room first. It's even unclear why there was a second secret passage in the first place.

"Then I'll go out and give instructions to set the table. The maids will come up and finish unpacking, so you can rest comfortably."

“Thank you, Alvin.”

After Alvin bowed and left, Emily walked over to the large bed in front of her and lay down.

A magnificent building, a refined interior, and impeccable service. With all this, wouldn't Killian have been able to marry a decent woman even without her debt?

Emily felt strange at that thought.

After finishing touring the mansion with the help of the servants, Emily sat alone in the garden and had tea.

She looked at the colorful flowers and fruit trees, the names of which she didn't know, growing in a disorderly manner, and even made plans for how to decorate them in the future.

It was a beautiful and magnificent garden with a waterfall, so she thought it would be very beautiful if it were decorated.

“Madam, would you like some more refreshments?”

The quick-witted maid asked, clearing away the empty plates.

“Yeah, would you mind?”

Emily loved baked goods, especially financiers, among many other desserts. Fortunately, the Starr pastry chef was a master at baking financiers.

“If it weren’t for that ending, it would be nice to live here forever.”

Emily, who had taken a liking to Starr for a simple reason, savoured the peace and took the last financier she had in her hand.

“The texture is absolutely perfect.”

Emily's mouth moved incessantly, as if satisfied.

Killian, who had not been seen all day, returned to the mansion the next day.

“The master would like to have a meal with you.”

"Did you feel bad for leaving me alone on my first day?"

Emily finished dressing up with the help of the maids and went down to the dining room. It was the first time since their marriage that she and Killian had a meal together alone.

Killian, who had arrived at the restaurant first, pulled out her chair and sat down again. He may have seemed a bit brusque, but he still had some basic manners.

"Thank you."

Emily also greeted him and sat down. Soon after, the butler brought out a variety of dishes on the table.

A long silence flowed between them as they continued their meal. Killian, a commoner by birth, was surprisingly well-mannered at the table.

No, it's difficult to simply say that his table manners were so perfect that they could be used as a textbook.

While she was wondering if she could ask where he learned that, Killian opened his mouth first.

“An invitation has arrived from the palace.”

“At the palace?”

Emily tilted her head and accepted the invitation Killian handed her.

It was a celebratory banquet held to commemorate the return of the Crown Prince, who had been studying abroad in the Robert Empire for a long time.

Since Emily was abroad when she was most social, she had never seen the Crown Prince either.

“Have you ever been to a palace party?”

Killian shook his head at Emily's question. After all, he hadn't been granted the title of Marquis for long, and there hadn't been any significant parties held at the palace in the interim.

And since no nobles sent him an invitation after purchasing the title, she concluded that, in fact, he had never even attended a noble party.

So, in order for Killian to avoid embarrassment there, it was necessary to teach him not only party culture but also noble culture.

Emily, who had quite a high social standing, did not want to be embarrassed at the first royal party she was attending after the fall.

“Actually, looking at your table manners, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about...”

Killian sensed what she was trying to say.

“You seem worried that I might make a mistake at the palace party.”

“What do you think?”

“It’s true that I don’t know much about the atmosphere there.”

“Then can I teach you a lesson?”

Once married, the husband's honor was also the wife's honor.

Killian agreed to Emily's proposal. He had purchased the title of Marquis for some reason, so he could frequently visit the palace.

There was a need to correct one's behavior for the future.
