IWAEBS - Chapter 325 < Why are you looking at me like that? >

“Princess, Elsa has sent another carrier pigeon!”

Cried the priest assisting Resilia, hurrying into the inn.

“It seems we’ll be able to see Prince Rams.”

“You found a way?”

“Elsa said Prince Rams is coming out to see the palace with Princess Lily.”

“Is that true?!”

Resilia paced around the inn. She couldn’t hide her excitement at the prospect of seeing Rams.

The worn floorboards creaked with every movement.

“This is my chance...!”

After years of feeling hopeful, she felt a return to her sense of appetite. She hadn’t eaten properly the previous day or two, waiting for news of Rams, so she was incredibly hungry.

Resilia felt elated, pacing the room as if dancing for a while.

After a while, two horns slowly rose through the slightly open window.

Who would've thought they would see Resilia after following a suspicious carrier pigeon?

Moiya and Moni were eavesdropping on Resilia's conversation from outside the window.

"Oh? We should tell Rams, right, Moiya~?"

"Huh? This is a chance to eat a ton of sausages, Moni~?"

After meeting the ladies in the reception room, Martins returned to the villa where the distinguished guests of the Kingdom of Shattonil resided.

He could barely get up when Bellos told him that such events would be held all week.

'I'll have to stay at the Lapion Imperial Palace for a week.'

But there was no need to wait a whole week.

One lady had already caught his eye. She was Catherine's cousin.

Everyone had somehow seen her somewhere.

Among the ladies were Melanie's younger sister and Rosie's cousin.

Catherine's cousin, in particular, had a striking resemblance to Catherine, but a completely opposite personality.

Which meant she had a good personality.

'Will she come tomorrow too?'

If she didn't come, he was willing to go find her himself.

"You said your hobby was swordsmanship, right?"

That fact was a huge draw.

For Martins, who was remarkably untalented in swordsmanship, it was a hobby he deeply admired.

Martins stopped walking when he noticed someone standing in front of his VIP room.

"You have news to tell me."

"Yes, Your Majesty. I have something to tell you."

One of Melody's attendants was waiting for him.

She was Elsa, the one who had sent the carrier pigeon to Resilia.

Elsa wasn't one of Resilia's followers, but someone placed by King Martins.

He couldn't eliminate all of her followers at once. Martins changed his mind, planting his own followers among them and keeping a close eye on the two siblings. It was Martins who had Elsa relay the news of Prince Rams's arrival at the Lapion Imperial Palace to Resilia.

"Let's go."

Martins entered the room with his attendant.

"Lady Resilia wishes to meet Prince Rams."

Elsa handed Martins the letter the carrier had brought.

Martins snorted after reading it.

“She doesn’t know the meaning of self-restraint. Even after all this time, she still harbors vain ambitions… tsk tsk tsk.”

The letter urged Resilia to find a chance to meet Prince Rams while she was staying at the palace.

“Your Majesty, I heard Prince Rams and Princess Lily are going to a famous bookstore in the palace tomorrow. I just sent that news to the carrier pigeon.”

Elsa lowered her voice.

“But Elsa, how did you know that Prince Rams and Princess Lily were going to the palace tomorrow?”

“Actually, Princess Melody... said she wanted to visit the residence of Her Highness Pecilini. So, on my way back from the West Palace a little while ago...”

Elsa began cautiously.

“Oh... wait a minute.”

Martins, who had been listening, raised a hand to interrupt Elsa.

A pang in his chest.

It wasn't long ago that Melody learned of Pecilini's true identity as her biological mother.

Martins had planned to tell her about her birth around the time of her debutante.

However, the royal courtiers proved to be both more reticent and more cruel than he'd anticipated. They kept muttering behind Melody's back, and eventually, young Melody learned that Martins wasn't her biological father.

However, Melody never cared about her biological father's existence.

Martins, always by her side, was her biological father.

But she couldn't remain indifferent to her mother's absence.

After much deliberation, Martins had no choice but to tell Melody about her birth mother.

Melody, who had been saddened by Pecilini's death, hugged him tightly, saying she was happy to have a father.

Instead, she patted Martin's back with her small hand, as if comforting him.

From that day on, Melody never asked him about her birth mother again.

"So I thought she was okay, but I guess not."

Martins felt a pang of sorrow. It was clear that, even though she didn't show it to him, she had always longed for her birth mother deep down.

"Your Majesty, are you alright?"

"I'm fine, so continue."

Martins said, his expression fading.

"Yes. So, after visiting Her Highness Pecilini's quarters and taking a walk around the West Palace, she met Princess Mao of the Kingdom of Aklatto. She seemed to have spoken with Prince Rams."

"Will Princess Mao join you tomorrow?"

"I don't think so."

"Really? "

"Yes."

“Princess Mao, who loves books, wanted to go with them, but she was very upset that she couldn’t.”

“Haha, so that’s why our Melody comforted Princess Mao.”

After all, comforting others was her specialty.

Martins asked with a gentle smile.

“Yes, that’s right.”

Elsa smiled back and continued.

“When Prince Rams goes on an outing to the palace tomorrow, Lady Resilia will be out and about, right?”

“Of course. I should remind her to be mindful of her surroundings so that no flies are attracted.”

They were planning to take a short break for dinner anyway and then head back to the main palace.

“I’ll discuss this matter with you two after the dinner is over.”

Martins planned to relay news of Resilia to Emperor Norton and Empress Rosi.

He also had to tell Emperor Linel to strengthen the guard for Rams and Lily's outing to the palace tomorrow.

***

After dinner, the adults remained in the banquet hall, each sipping a glass of wine.

The children flocked to Mathias's room. It was time to play to their hearts' content until the servants came to find them.

Lily and Prince Rams were the last to reach Mathias's room.

"Rams!"

A voice called out as they walked down the hallway.

Rams turned his head in the direction of Moiya's voice.

Moiya and Moni were waving from the hallway window.

"Finally, did you find out about your mother, Moni~?"

"Really? Really?"

Rams asked, and this time Moiya patted his shoulder and spoke again.

"We worked so hard to find out where your mother was, didn't we, Moiya~?"

"That's right. We barely managed to find out after wandering around all night without sleep."

Moni added.

In fact, Rams had been asking Moiya and Moni months ago to find out about Resilia's whereabouts.

Even though she was his biological mother, whom he had never met, he was deeply curious about how she was doing.

Of course, this was a separate feeling from his love for Rosie, who had raised him like her own child since childhood.

As he grew up, Rams's hair color had turned a light pink.

As a baby, it was said to have been blond, like his father, Emperor Norton, but as he grew older, it began to resemble his mother's.

Like Melody, Rams first heard stories about his biological mother through the palace attendants from an early age. They told him why he had been abandoned by his father, what sin he had committed, and even how his mother had accidentally dropped him down a valley when he was a baby.

Before entering the Academy, Rams visited Emperor Norton and asked him about his biological mother.

Emperor Norton answered Rams' questions candidly.

Listening to his father's words, his mind felt clearer.

He had heard about Resilia from the court attendants. Half of the stories about her were exaggerated or embellished. He also heard then that her biological mother moved between monasteries in the Kingdom of Shattonil and the Lapion Empire once a year.

Rams hoped to see his biological mother, even from afar, while visiting the Lapion Empire for Princess Lily's birthday party. He knew his father wouldn't approve if he told him, and his mother, Rosie, might be upset, so he had no choice but to secretly inquire.

Of course, he didn't have high expectations.

He certainly didn't think of meeting her in person.

But...

"Resilia is in the palace right now. She's very close, right?"

"We worked really hard to find out. We deserve a box of sausages each."

Moiya said with a smug grin.

They had also accidentally discovered this fact while chasing the homing pigeons that had been going back and forth to the palace yesterday and today, but they were blinded by the sausages and ended up lying.

Regardless of the process, since they found his biological mother, they more than deserve the sausages!

Moiya and Moni had agreed on that.

“Where in the palace... is she?”

Rams’s voice trembled slightly.

Moiya and Moni shut their mouths tightly, averting their ruby eyes and pretending not to know.

“Where was that place? I can’t remember all of a sudden?”

“Am I hungry? Oh, maybe I’m hungry for sausages?”

“I’ll give you two boxes of sausages each.”

Moiya blurted out at Rams’s suggestion.

“You’re staying at the inn near the square, right, Moiya?”

“Shall we take you there tomorrow?”

Moni followed suit.

“Not tomorrow. There’ll be a lot of eyes watching. And I don’t want my parents to know.”

“Then it’s difficult, Moni?”

“Isn’t there another way?”

Rams's expression became serious.

Lily stared at his depressed face.

Lily, who usually disliked complicated thoughts, couldn't keep up with the conversation between Rams and the two wyverns.

Furthermore, Lily thought Rams's biological mother was Empress Rosie, which made her even more confused.

"So there are two mothers-in-law? What should I do?"

What should I do? Let's impress them both!

That was Lily's conclusion.

"Your Highness, I'll help you!"

"...Your Highness?"

"There's a place we can sneak out."

Lily whispered secretly to Rams, then glanced at Moiya and Moni.

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

Ominously.

Lily's eyes always lit up whenever she was about to cause a major incident, and that was exactly what happened now.

"Judging by your smiling face, I guess you have some plan?"

Moni whispered to Moiya, looking at Lily with an anxious gaze.

"How can Your Highness help me?"

Rams asked, clutching at straws.

Still, her gaze was unusual, and he felt strangely trusting.

“Heehee, I know a hole you can escape through!”

Lily said with a proud expression.

Then, in a solemn voice, she said, “I’ll take care of you. Let’s go!” Immediately, she displayed her crazy drive.

Grabbing Rams’ hand, she avoided the central staircase and ran towards the stairs at the end of the hallway used by the servants.

Unlike Mathias, Lily was always quite meticulous when it came to accidents.

Moiya and Moni watched the backs of the two children, conflicted.

“Should I stop them or help them? Are you confused, Moni~?”

“Ow~? Just make sure the master doesn’t find out, Moiya~?”

As always, the two held hands affectionately and flew back out the window to cause trouble together.

But someone was eavesdropping.

“What’s a hole?”

Mathias had come out to find his sister and Prince Rams, but he had snuck behind a statue and overheard their conversation.

“Huh, you left me out? I’ll tell everyone!”

Mathias immediately ran down to the banquet hall to find Zelda and Linel.

***

After dinner, the banquet hall resembled a ballroom.

Around the time Linel started drinking wine, he asked Stiane to bring in the band.

Everyone felt pleasantly tipsy and began dancing with their partners. As the music grew more upbeat, they all held hands and danced in a circle, switching partners.

King Hetor kept stepping on their feet, so when it was their turn to be partners with Hetor, they were busy admonishing each other, saying, “Be careful!”, “Keep calm!”, and “Dance while looking down!”

“Everyone, stop being like that and take care of our King. I have to dance without regrets today. Hohoho!”

Melanie waltzed with Linel, then, as soon as the song changed, she danced with Emperor Norton, then linked arms with King Martins and spun around, then, dizzy, returned to dancing properly with Count Ethan.

Melanie, you look so happy.

I burst out laughing, watching Melanie dance until the soles of her feet were on fire. She'd been dancing with Hetor in the Kingdom of Aklatto so many times that her toenails had fallen off three times.

So she declared that today, she would dance freely with other partners.

Because of this, King Hetor became a burden to Rosie, Catherine, and me, and was reduced to a bullying situation.

Catherine stepped in and showed and taught him the basics of ballroom dancing.

“Yes, step your right foot back and your left foot forward naturally... No, that’s not it!”

Catherine’s patience, which had been displaying great kindness, began to crumble. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard that angry voice. I thought she was holding back well somehow.

“How many times do I have to tell you! You have to step naturally, right? With the intention of kicking the other person’s shin... Like that, what if you stick your foot out like that!”

Catherine’s teaching, which had begun with kindness and elegance, was nowhere to be found, and her voice gradually grew louder.

King Hetor, feeling very intimidated, moved his feet, watching Catherine’s reaction, but there was no sign of improvement.

“Whew, I think you should just give up on dancing.”

Catherine raised both hands and finally surrendered.

“I think it’ll be okay if you just do a little more...”

King Hetor spoke pleadingly, but his words trailed off, as if he was still unsure.

King Hetor’s tall stature seemed to shrink before Catherine.

Rosie and I stared at the two, holding back laughter, until our eyes met King Hetor's.

"What's wrong? He's coming towards us."

"It's not me. He's looking at Empress Rosie."

"What's wrong, Your Majesty? He's not heading my way!"

No matter which direction Hetor was walking from, I gently pushed Rosie forward.

Even if he's coming, as long as it's not me.

"Hui, Hui, go to Rosie."

I prayed inwardly, as if reciting a spell.

"Your Majesty, Empress Zelda..."

King Hetor finally called out to me.

I couldn't openly frown; this was so awkward.

Just then, the banquet hall door opened, and Mathias ran towards me.

How adorable.

"Mother~!"

Our son is our savior.

"Oh, right. Mathias~."

I quickly turned my back on King Hetor and opened my arms to Mathias.

"What's wrong?"

"I came to tell you."

Mathias spoke with a voice brimming with mission, like a knight heading to battle.

“...What?”

“Your mother’s daughter escaped the palace through a hole.”

“Mathias, what are you talking about?”

“She even took Prince Rams with her.”

Mathias grumbled with an indignant expression.

What the hell is this? A hole...

How did Lily know about that place?

I calmed down for a moment and asked Mathias,

“Uh, where are you going?”

“I don’t know. But, do you know who Resilia is?”

“?!”
