IWAEBS - Chapter 237 < My Stomach Hurts >

The second trial began.

More nobles attended than at the first.

The anticipation of seeing the "Incarnation Sword" firsthand seemed to have piqued their curiosity.

A completely different tension hung in the courtroom than yesterday.

For me, standing face to face with Prince Tesla was more agonizing than the trial itself.

"In today's trial, we will begin by determining the authenticity of the evidence recovered from Her Highness Zelda's residence."

As the High Priest spoke, four priests brought out the sword wrapped in a white cloth.

The evidence was placed squarely in the center, where Prince Tesla and I stood. It was placed on a high table so that it could be clearly seen by the audience.

Nevertheless, the heads of the nobles sitting in their chairs began to pop up, one by one.

Prince Tesla took advantage of the commotion to look at me and secretly pretended to draw a line with his hand.

Crazy bastard.

He didn't realize that the action he had just taken would be his future destiny.

Roxana, who had taken the same fateful route, also looked bright.

She wore a veiled hat today.

I could still feel the heat on her burned face.

Why haven't they treated it yet? Are the burns too severe to heal?

"Vice-priest, remove the evidence."

At the high priest's voice, I tore my gaze from Roxana and looked at the vice-priest.

"Yes, Your High Priest."

The vice-priest removed the white cloth, revealing the "Incarnation Sword."

However, it was merely a "fake" that resembled the Incarnation Sword; the real one beat within my heart, alongside my very life.

The ruby gem Melanie had procured from the hilt of the fake Incarnation Sword emitted a dazzling light.

The size and shape of the sword were so similar to the Incarnation Sword that those who had never seen the real Incarnation Sword could not help but believe it.

Even Prince Tesla, who had stabbed me with the real Incarnation Sword, couldn't recognize the fake.

However, Roxana, who had kept the Incarnation Sword, looked shocked.

It was quite a sight to see their once triumphant expressions plummet to the abyss.

“The captains of the main palace guards, who first discovered the sword in Her Highness Zelda’s quarters, and the captains of the Empress’s palace guards, please come to the witness stand.”

At the High Priest’s call, the two captains of the guards quickly came to the witness stand.

The two imposing captains of the guards were actually Moiya and Moni.

I was anxious that they might make a mistake.

Sharon must have been just as anxious as I was, watching the two of them transform into captains of the guards in the quarters yesterday.

Moiya and Moni, who had successfully completed their witness oaths, glanced at me and gave me a look that told me not to worry. The more confident they looked, the more my anxiety grew.

“First, I will ask the captain of the main palace guards, Roseto Erno. Is it true that you discovered the sword in Her Highness Zelda’s quarters yesterday?”

“Yes, that is correct.”

“Crop Chaconne, Captain of the Empress’s Guard, I heard that you were the first to discover the sword in the dressing room of the bedroom. Is that true?”

“Yes, it is true, Moni... No, what is it?”

“...? Are you saying it is true?”

“Of course it is true, Moni... What is it?”

Moni looked up at the High Priest and said with a slightly annoyed tone.

“The High Priest is old and can’t understand what I’m saying, Moni~”

Moni clicked her tongue and muttered softly.

Fortunately, the witness stand and the platform where the High Priest was sitting were a certain distance away, so Moni’s monologue seemed unheard.

After confirming with the two captains of the guards how the evidence was acquired, the High Priest immediately called the next witness.

He appointed Magic Tower Lord to the witness stand to determine whether it was indeed the ‘Incarnation Sword.’

Wasn’t Magic Tower Lord not on the witness list I received yesterday? Roxana was already listed as the person to determine the Incarnation Sword. But it seemed that Linel had put the Magic Tower Lord on the list before the trial.

“The Magic Tower Lord will be the witness requested by His Majesty the Emperor to determine the authenticity of the Incarnation Sword.”

Linel continued the High Priest’s words.

“As the original owner of the Incarnation Sword, I have determined that the Magic Tower Lord is more suitable than the Empress. Of course, the Empress will also come to the witness stand to verify the Incarnation Sword’s authenticity.”

Roxana looked at Linel and the Magic Tower Lord in turn with a bewildered expression, but could not object.

“Magic Tower Lord, is the sword in front of you really the Incarnation Sword?”

My best friend opened his mouth slowly, as if deliberately taking a pause, in response to the High Priest’s question.

“That is... not the Incarnation Sword, Your High Priest.”

“...Are you sure?”

“Yes, I am sure. That is a sword very similar to the Incarnation Sword.”

The courtroom began to stir.

“No way, I must have seen it wrong!”

Prince Tesla shouted, rising to his feet.

“There’s no way I would recognize the Incarnation Sword. There’s even less reason to lie. This sword isn’t the Incarnation Sword.”

In response to the demonstrator’s firm testimony, the High Priest quickly summoned the subordinate priests for a meeting, then addressed the observers.

“We’ll take a short recess and resume the trial at 3 p.m.!”

The High Priest, too, seemed distraught, as the evidence Prince Tesla had claimed to be the Incarnation Sword turned out to be fake.

After Melanie and Count Ethan testified in the afternoon trial, the atmosphere would shift in my favor.

I smiled as I watched Roxana hurriedly leave the courtroom.

***

After the recess, Rosie and Melanie left the Grand Hall. They decided to have a quick lunch at Melanie’s quarters, which were the closest to the Grand Hall, before returning.

“It would be nice to bring Her Majesty the Empress with you...”

Rosie looked at Zelda's carriage, which had already left the Great Hall.

"You're not supposed to be with an important witness during the trial, are you?"

Melanie looked at Rosie, who had laughed and sighed, referring to herself as an important witness.

"Is it because of yesterday? I heard His Majesty told you to go to the Pasha Empire with Prince Norton first? What are you worried about?"

Melanie asked teasingly, her eyes wide.

After yesterday's trial, Rosie had been drinking tea with Melanie in his quarters and told her everything that had happened in the waiting room.

"Why haven't you made up your mind yet?"

"It's only been a day?"

"It's been a day. You're going to follow Prince Norton anyway, so why are you acting so worried?"

Melanie, already quite upset about being separated from Rosie, spoke with a sullen tone, but she patted Rosie on the back again.

"First, eat something and think about it. I need to eat well so I can testify properly later, right?"

"Yes, that's right. The important thing is that the trial goes well."

The two smiled affectionately as they headed toward the carriage.

As they walked to Melanie's waiting carriage, someone called out to Rosie from behind.

"Come talk to me for a moment."

It was Princess Resilia.

Rosie hesitated for a moment, then collected herself.

"What's the matter?"

"Are you asking because you don't know?"

Princess Resilia asked sharply.

"Aha, I see Princess Resilia heard the news, too? You're here to congratulate Her Highness Rosie, right?"

Melanie interrupted with a laugh.

It was the perfect comment to upset Princess Resilia.

"You... are a bit out of it, aren't you? Talk to Her Highness Rosie."

Princess Resilia pursed her lips and glared at Melanie.

Melanie, unwilling to be outdone, immediately shot back,

"You're out of it, too. Why are you interested in other people's love lives, so obscene?"

"...What? Obscene?!"

"Oh, promiscuous? No? Obscene seems to be the right word."

Princess Resilia and Melanie snarled, their faces close together.

“Speak,”

Rosie said to Princess Resilia, pulling them apart.

“You’d better understand the subject.”

Princess Resilia’s voice was laced with anger.

“What are you talking about?”

“Norton was my man. I’d be remiss if you didn’t know.”

Princess Resilia was no longer blunt.

The Kingdom of Shattonil, already treated as a vassal of the Lapion Empire, was now on the verge of total ruin because of Prince Tesla.

'If you were going to stab her, you should have killed her!'

Her brother’s botched actions had put her life in jeopardy. While attempted murder would spare him the death penalty as a foreign royal, she feared the future repercussions for the Lapion Empire.

'I must find a way to survive.'

Princess Resilia had decided to abandon her powerless homeland after today’s trial.

“No, I already know what kind of relationship you two had. But you betrayed the Prince, didn’t you?”

“...That’s not betrayal! Don’t speak carelessly when you don’t even know him well.”

“You abandoned young Rams and returned to the kingdom, and you’re saying that’s not betrayal?”

Rosie’s voice trembled slightly, but her eyes remained steady.

“How, you know Rams..m?!”

Princess Resilia’s eyes shook wildly.

“Oh my, Princess. ‘You’? To the one who will become the Crown Princess of the Pasha Empire.”

Melanie deliberately said sarcastically.

When Princess Resilia made a bewildered expression, Melanie quickly added,

“He was so cute, smiling so brightly, unlike any child abandoned by his mother.”

“Wh-what are you talking about? When did Her Highness Melanie ever see our Rams?”

Princess Resilia’s eyes widened.

“I saw him at Mama Rosie’s residence. While you were at the Lapion Imperial Palace, wasting your time.”

Melanie replied with a pleased smile.

Of course, it was a lie. Melanie had merely made it seem like she’d seen Rams herself, based on what Rosie had told her.

Princess Resilia stared at the two of them for a moment, shocked, before speaking again.

“Listen carefully! I never abandoned Norton or Rams... I never did. And Rams’s biological mother is me. Even if Emperor Linel approved of your relationship, do you think the Pasha Imperial Palace would acknowledge Your Highness Rosie? Wake up!”

“Princess Resilia, you should stop being so clingy and let Prince Norton go.”

Rosie, not to be outdone, snapped back.

“What? Such insolence...!”

Princess Resilia’s eyes lit up, and she gasped for breath.

“Fine, do as you please. After all, you’re destined to live and die as a concubine in the Pasha Empire.”

With a satisfied smile, she warned Rosie.

“Do you think you can spit out everything you want?”

Rosie responded calmly, suppressing her anger.

“If you’ll stay by Norton’s side until the end, then let’s live happily ever after with one man between us.”

Princess Resilia suddenly became polite and, with a confident expression, extended her hand to Rosie.

“!”

Rosie stared blankly at her outstretched hand.

‘Princess Resilia is also thinking of following the Prince to the Pasha Empire! What should we do...?’

***

Pecilini’s carriage arrived at the main palace.

During the break, Linel summoned Pecilini and arranged for her to have lunch at the main palace first. He had something to ask her about her father, the Marquis of Astor, one of the key ministers.

After the meal, Pecilini was escorted by Stiane to the study where Linel was waiting.

“Madam Pecilini, you must wait a moment. There is a guest meeting His Majesty first. If it is difficult, His Majesty has ordered you to be escorted to the reception room.”

Raphael came out of the study and spoke to her.

“No, I think it would be okay to wait here...”

Pecilini replied with a gentle smile.

“Yes, as you wish. I am sure you will not be speaking for long.”

“Of course. Thank you for your consideration.”

Raphael gave her a brief bow and was about to re-enter the study when he spotted Roxana ascending the central staircase.

Roxana saw Pecilini in front of the study, then walked over with a determined gaze.

“I greet Your Majesty the Empress...”

Raphael and Pesilini greeted Roxana simultaneously.

“I have come to speak to His Majesty about the trial.”

Roxana glared at Pesilini and explained her reason for coming to Raphael.

“Excuse me, but he is currently in his office speaking with Grand Duke Martins of the Kingdom of Shattonil. You will have to wait a moment.”

“Really? You came to see me about Prince Tesla’s trial, right? I came to see him about that, too, so I think we can meet together. Tell me.”

Roxana seemed quite uncomfortable.

“...Yes, please wait a moment.”

Raphael glanced at the frightened Pesilini and reluctantly followed Roxana’s orders into the office.

As the office door closed, Roxana turned to Pesilini and asked her threateningly,

“I see you are here. I asked you to do so, and you couldn’t wait to tell His Majesty that you are pregnant?”

“Wow, Your Majesty, this is unfair. His Majesty found out about the pregnancy first and came to my residence...!”

“Ha! Are you asking me to believe that now?”

Roxana cut Pecilini off and demanded an explanation.

“But it is true, please believe me, Your Majesty!”

“The pregnant concubine is quite impressive. To think that someone like you has even started visiting the main palace.”

Although she spoke in a low voice, Roxana’s murderous aura in her tone was palpable.

Pecilini’s whole body tensed up as he felt the murderous energy.

Already unstable due to Prince Tesla’s trial, meeting Roxana made her stress level extremely high.

“Since you broke your promise first, I guess the baby in your womb is not that precious?”

Pecilini’s face began to turn pale at Roxana’s threatening tone.

It was when the study door opened.

“Ah, ah!”

Pecilini put both hands on her stomach and bent forward as if she was about to fall forward.

“Empress, what on earth is going on!”

Linel, who had come out of the study, quickly supported Pecilini and looked at Roxana in front of him.

“Your Majesty, I, I don’t know anything...”

Roxana took a step back in panic.

“I think the baby was startled because of Her Majesty, sob...!”

Pecilini, who had been hanging her head, raised her head with tears streaming down her face and sobbed.

“Shut up!”

Roxana shouted at Pecilini.

Pecilini flinched and clung to Linel’s arm.

“Your Majesty... my stomach, my stomach hurts!”
