IWPDY - Chapter 36

“Why are you crying?”

And the dream changed.

“...Winfred?”

Just a moment ago, she was rubbing her face against her mother's cheek, feeling the happiest she's ever felt.

Before she knew it, she was in a different place.

Where am I? She looked around.

Ah, on the roof. On the roof, where she looked at the stars with Winfred.

But did Aila cry at that time? No, she definitely didn't cry.

Oddly enough, her eyes were moist.

“Don’t cry, Aila. If you cry...”

If you cry... Winfred couldn’t continue speaking, but somehow he seemed to know what she was trying to say.

In her dream, Winfred had a heartbreaking expression on his face, as if her tears were his.

"Miss."

“...It’s strange. It’s Cloud.”

A long scar on the corner of his right eye. The dream had changed again, and she saw Cloud before her eyes.

She didn't like this dream one bit. Why did it have to be Cloud, of all people?

Aila puffed out her cheeks in discontent. She was with Winfred.

She didn't like the character in her dream; her eyes stung, and her vision became blurry.

“I’m sorry, Miss. I...”

Cloud apologized to her with an expression that said he couldn't stand the pain.

“...What a strange dream. Cloud, you... wouldn’t apologize to me, right?”

Because Cloud is a bad guy. He's a bad son who deceived Aila and used her for his family's sake.

"...Worry."

“What? What are you sorry about?”

Why are you saying sorry? It was just a dream anyway, so why did you come to see me in my dreams and upset me like this?

Aila was angry and wanted to scream, but she had no strength in her body. It must have been a dream.

“....”

Cloud shut his mouth tightly. It wasn't even funny. Even if it was a dream, there was no way he would confess his crimes.

What were you expecting when you asked?

“...Do you like it when you deceive me?”

Aila asked with a sneer. Cloud's blunt face twisted in guilt.

“Isn’t it fun to fool a stupid child?”

No. She already knew he didn't think it was funny.

Cloud was distressed at having to deceive her. And yet...

Maybe what she's doing is nothing more than venting her anger.

Still, it's a dream.

...Because it’s a dream.

And then, the scene changed again.

***

“Miss, miss?”

Aila, who seemed to have woken up for a moment, soon seemed to have fallen asleep again.

‘...Is it fun to fool a stupid child?’

Cloud, who had been watching over her all night and nursing her, frowned. He couldn't figure out what he had just heard.

It was as if she spoke as if she knew everything.

That can't be true. So, it won't work.

Although the fireplace was warming the air, a cold wind blew down his spine.

'...Did you know that?'

Since when and until when?

Does she know that she is not Byron's biological daughter? Or that he is raising her to be an assassin to kill her biological father?

'No. It can't be.'

It couldn't be. How on earth could a thirteen-year-old child know all this and pretend not to know, and live her life as usual, behaving like Byron?

As he was watching Aila sleeping with a face filled with shock and guilt, Laura, who had gone to sleep, opened the door and came in.

“Excuse me, Uncle. I can take care of her now... Go and rest.”

“Oh, yes. I’ll go now.”

Even as he left Aila's room, replacing Laura, Cloud's gaze kept on Aila. And his pupils trembled slightly.

Absolutely not, he thought it couldn't be that.

A small doubt arose in his heart.

What a ridiculous thought, that maybe that little kid knows the whole truth.

He kept raising his head.

***

‘...Why is my head so heavy?’

Aila sat up blankly. Then, a wet towel fell from above her head. What is this? Aila shook off the sleepiness hanging from her eyes and looked around to figure out the situation.

Laura was sitting on a chair next to the bed, nodding off.

Only then did the memory come back to me.

'Oh, I fell down.'

In the cold rain, she gritted her teeth and held on.

She wasn't in the shape to collapse just because she got rained on. It seemed to be due to accumulated fatigue.

'How long did I sleep?'

Her back was sore, and her head felt dull. It had been so long since she had slept this well that she had no idea how much time had passed.

“Oh. You’re awake, miss.”

The rustling sound she made startled Laura awake from her slumber.

“What happened...?”

“...How did it happen? Do you know how surprised the master was when the young lady suddenly collapsed? And you had been sleeping for two whole days.”

'Two days...? I slept for that long?'

It was an unbelievable story. Had she ever slept so long in her life? She was used to regular life, always going to bed early and waking up early.

She had probably never lain down for this long, except perhaps as a newborn.

‘...And yet I'm sleepy? I must really be unwell.’

Even though she had slept for two whole days, she felt like she could fall asleep as soon as she lay down again.

“Your fever... seems to have gone down a lot. Aren’t you hungry?”

Laura's hand, which was still resting on her forehead, seemed to be quite cold, indicating that she still had a slight fever.

“Uh. Yeah, I’m hungry.”

After hearing Laura's words, her stomach finally started growling. It was understandable, since she hadn't eaten anything for two days.

“Please wait a moment. I’ll bring you something to eat right away.”

Laura grumbled for a moment that she was bothering her because she was sick for no reason, and then quickly brought her a steaming bowl of chicken soup.

‘...Now that I think about it, I think I had a dream.’

Aila took a sip of her hot soup and sat lost in thought. After two days of sleep, she must have had quite a few dreams.

There wasn't a single dream that she could clearly remember.

She had good dreams about her biological mother and father, and she also had bad dreams about Byron.

She thinks she had a dream about Winfred, too.

'It's not important.'

Aila concentrated on eating the soup. She was hungry after not eating for two days, but the soup was really delicious.

Even though she was her enemy who deceived her, she couldn't help but acknowledge Capella's cooking skills.

As Aila emptied the bowl, Laura handed over some medicine that was obviously very bad.

After frowning and taking the medicine, she fell asleep again.

"...Can I sleep some more?”

“Yes, sir. My master has ordered me to rest until I fully recover.”

Laura straightened her pillow and blanket and lay down on the bed. She had been asleep for two days, so she thought it would be hard to fall asleep again, but her worries were in vain as she quickly fell asleep.

***

Aila had been sick for quite some time.

She thought it was okay because it was the first time in her life that she had been this lazy, but no matter how much she slept, she still felt sleepy, and it was not easy to get out of bed.

When she woke up after spending weeks in bed, the season had completely changed.

The trees that had once been covered in colorful leaves are now, one by one, leaving only bare branches, and the first snow of this winter has also covered the world in a soft white.

It seemed like she had grown a lot in her last life around this time, and it was the same in this life. However, there were still a few years left until she became the person she remembered.

It wasn't that she slept a lot because she was sick, but she had grown so much that she thought she was trying to grow taller.

“I think I need to get some new clothes.”

Laura clicked her tongue in disapproval as she saw that her short, chubby arms and legs were gradually growing longer, and the sleeves of her training uniform were dangling too short.

It's natural for a child to grow up, so why are they so dissatisfied?

Aila understands that it's not pleasant to have so much work to do, since Laura and Capella will be cutting and sewing new clothes.

She couldn't figure out why it was necessary to show it off like this in front of her.

In her past life, she was so depressed that she even apologized for growing taller. Thinking back now, it was really absurd.

“...Yeah, that’s right.”

Aila gave a vague nod in a soulless voice.

She knew that Laura wanted her to be the one to apologise in a huff. But if she didn't, there was nothing Laura could do about it.

Because growing taller was really natural.

“...”

As expected, it was as she had expected. Laura seemed to be displeased with Aila's attitude, but since there was nothing she could do, she kept her mouth shut.

Since she had nothing to wear right away, Aila put on Laura's coat. It was a little long, but since Laura wasn't very tall, it was okay.

The weather has gotten quite cold, and Laura is worried because Aila has been sick for a long time. She puts on a fluffy scarf and earmuffs.

“You haven’t trained much lately, so you’ll have to work that much harder to catch up. Otherwise, Master will be disappointed.”

“...Yes, Laura. I’ll try my best.”

It was nice not having to hear Laura's nagging while she was sick and lying in bed. It felt like she was back to her daily routine.
