This Love Is Like Death - Chapter 38

Amelia was a con artist against the Empire. Of course, it wasn't her intention, but when the truth comes out and the blood boils, can the play's main character survive?

“Well, isn’t it a relationship that we’ll have to sort out anyway?”

No way, thought Ivan.

Rodan looked at Ivan like that and thought that he was very cold-hearted for a woman who had given birth to his child. However, if he thinks about it, Ivan's decision was right. There was no reason for Ivan to consider Amelia's situation.

Moreover, Ivan was the Emperor. He was a man who learned to use the people around him like chess pieces while growing up.

Aaron came to visit. Amelia didn't seem too happy about his sudden visit. At least, as long as Louis was by her side, she couldn't ignore his calls.

"What's the matter?"

Amelia spoke first.

“Has the child found stability now?”

But Aaron was just talking nonsense. It was funny to ask about Ian's well-being when he didn't even care. In fact, isn't Aaron the one who most wants Ian to die?

“It’s still hard without me at night.”

Even so, she couldn't avoid answering Aaron's question. Amelia answered with a suitable lie. It was true that Ian still visited Amelia every night, but she was worried that Aaron would immediately drag her away if she told him that the child had calmed down. The fact that he came in person meant that it was the most likely possibility.

“I see. It’s a big problem that the child is so attached to the Priestess and won’t leave you.”

But, surprisingly, Aaron didn't seem offended at all. Instead, he acted like she was really pitiful and couldn't stand it. Amelia was taken aback by his unexpected attitude.

“It will be difficult to bring you here in a short time.”

Even Aaron spoke as if he was going to leave her here for a long time. Amelia couldn't say anything easily and just watched Aaron's expression.

“Does that mean I can stay in the palace longer?”

“If His Majesty the Emperor permits, there is no reason why it would be impossible. The child who will become the bridge between the Imperial Family and the Temple must grow up safely and securely.”

It sounded extremely practical and common sense. That's why she couldn't believe it. There must be another intention. Amelia narrowed her eyes without letting go of her suspicions. Aaron seemed to sense her gaze and glanced at the maids.

“Louis. Sent out the other servants around you, and Louis is out too.”

As soon as Amelia gave the order, Louis hurriedly sent all the servants out into the hallway. Then, she went outside and closed the door tightly. It was to check the situation from the outside in case anyone was listening.

“What are you thinking?”

Amelia asked first. Aaron smiled leisurely, savoring the aroma of the tea.

“Aaron.”

“It is exactly as I said.”

But as Amelia kept urging him, it seemed she couldn't relax completely. Aaron put his teacup back on the saucer without even taking a sip.

“I can stay in the palace as long as I want? Is that what you meant?”

"You're right."

"Why?"

Amelia asked directly. His attitude, which had never been one to allow her to cross the temple walls, suddenly changed, and she had a gut feeling that he was up to something.

“Didn’t you say you had something to do here? The child would be a good excuse for you to stay here. That’s why I told you that you can stay with the child.”

As expected, Aaron completely revealed his hidden feelings. Even if you think about it, it doesn't seem like a normal or sensible thing to do, but Aaron, who was trying to make her do it, had an incredibly calm and shameless face.

“I had something to do? What was it?”

Amelia asked, her fur standing on end like a wary cat.

“It’s about getting close to His Majesty the Emperor. You’ve been concerned that relations between the Imperial Family and the Temple are looking bad, so please take this opportunity to make it clear to others.”

“...”

“Since we have a child who is a common denominator, it shouldn’t be that difficult.”

Aaron's words sounded very meaningful. As if he were saying that she couldn't live with sin, her heart started beating fast. Amelia tried hard to hide her worry that Aaron might have found out who Ian's biological father was. However, her tongue stuck out, unable to hide her discomfort, and she wet her lips for no reason.

“And then all of a sudden you want to be Empress, but you don't.”

“Stop beating around the bush.”

“I wonder.”

Aaron seemed to have been waiting for those words, and immediately changed his attitude to say yes. It seemed like it didn't matter since there were no ears to hear it anyway.

“Seduce the Emperor and spend the night with him.”

"...what?"

Amelia asked back with a bewildered face. Aaron's order was completely contrary to the life he had been forcing upon Amelia. Aaron was the one who had told Amelia that it was her destiny to spend the night with a man with black hair and black eyes and to give birth to a daughter who would continue the line of Priestesses.

“So that everyone knows that you slept with the Emperor, and you can’t deny it.”

But suddenly, he wants her to spend the night with Ivan? Does that mean he wants her to see a child from him? Ivan was a man with blond hair as beautiful as the sun. His eyes were also green and sparkling like young leaves. He was not a person they would consider.

Amelia was confused by the order that came out of nowhere.

“What are you planning to do? If I spend the night with the Emperor, what do you plan to do?”

Of course, Aaron's order seemed easy to Amelia. After all, sharing a bed with the man she loved. It didn't seem difficult.

But apart from that, if Ivan had anything to lose because of it, it was definitely something she had to be careful about. She didn't want Ivan's life to be threatened or for his position to be in any trouble.

She thought she had lost him once and held on for a year. It was a despair close to the abyss, and Amelia did not want to experience similar pain again. The relationship between the royal family and the temple was not good, so she did not want to get involved in something useless and be hated by Ivan.

“The Emperor will be the thug who raped you, and the temple will risk a holy war in your honor.”

Aaron answered obediently. Amelia knew at that moment that this was something she absolutely could not do. For Ivan's sake, she had to keep their relationship a secret as it was up until now.

“Do you really think I’d just go into bed with a guy I barely know?”

Aaron laughed at Amelia's answer, as if he had already expected such a sensible answer.

“You already did it.”

Amelia had already spent the night with a man she didn't like and had a child with him. She had already done it once, so doing it a second time wouldn't be that bad.

“Please throw away your petty feelings of guilt and regret. Your children are precious to you.”

It also meant that if she wanted to protect her precious child, she had to do whatever he said.

“Don’t think that Louis is the only one watching over you and the child in the palace.”

Aaron warned. Amelia naturally recalled the cold voice and the hand that deliberately scratched her ankle, which had been bitten by the dog. As she recalled his face asking, “Will you let your child die like this?”, goosebumps suddenly appeared all over her body.

Amelia had faith in Aaron for one thing. Aaron was a madman who could kill a newborn baby. Besides, Amelia didn't know where her child was in the palace. It was just a gesture of reconciliation. Whether he was bitten by a beast or not, it wouldn't be easy to cover it up as an accident.

“If you do as I say, you will be free. The sacred legend will end with you.”

“...”

“Of course, I won’t need your daughter anymore. If you need your precious son, I’ll give him back to you.”

This time, Aaron changed his attitude and whispered softly. His voice was so sweet and gentle that it was impossible to refuse. As if he had swung the whip once, and now it was time to offer a carrot.

Amelia paused involuntarily and looked at Aaron's face. Unlike the previous times when she had not been able to properly meet his eyes.

“If you continue not to do as you should and you need help, please let me know. I will also get some medicine just in case.”

Aaron seemed to know that Amelia's heart was wavering as much as her eyes.

“See you later.”

So, that's why he left without any further persuasion or threats.
