EBS - Chapter 98 < Broken Mirror >

“Your Highness, there is something I haven’t told you. There is a guest in the palace who came to see you.”

“Me?”

However, the palace for business purposes is currently blocked off from the outside.

When Sepia asked with a puzzled look, Elon continued.

“The second son of the Kruds family visited before the palace was put under surveillance. I told him that he could not see you right now... While he was waiting, the knights barged in and locked him in the palace.”

Etensel Kruds.

Sepia was silent for a moment at the name of the red fox that she had momentarily forgotten.

‘Why him?’

Hadn’t she made him understand a relationship formed out of mistaken belief before?

Sepia thought back to the last time she had met Etensel.

At that time, clearly.

‘He told me to be careful of Demios.’

Along with the words that she should call him whenever she needed help.

Etensel’s attitude was questionable, but she didn’t have time to pay much attention to it.

Now that she's worried about that.

But what if he came to see her on purpose because he knew something?

Sepia raised her head after her doubts grew.

“Elon, please call me Lord Kruds.”

“...Ahem, I understand.”

Elon coughed and quickly turned around.

'Why is he doing that?’

Now that she thinks about it, he had been reacting by covering his nose and mouth or turning his head away since earlier.

Although he must have been trying not to show it.

Sepia watched his hunched back as he hurried away with a puzzled expression.

When Elon was out of sight, she looked to the side and saw Roxanne’s lips slightly raised.

She couldn’t tell exactly why, but it was a smile that seemed twisted somewhere.

‘You said you knew that Etensel was that fox, right?’

That meant he might have already noticed Etensel’s feelings.

The thought that suddenly occurred to her led to the hesitation that perhaps she shouldn’t have called Etensel in front of him.

However, it was already spilled milk.

“Excuse me.”

Elon opened the door and came inside.

His curly red hair was visible behind his back.

As if he had been waiting for Sepia’s call, Etensel, who had made quick appearances, met Roxanne’s eyes and stopped just before the threshold.

Elon, puzzled, asked,

“Why are you doing this?”

“I would like to request a private meeting with Her Highness.”

The green eyes of summer seemed particularly stubborn.

Sepia, who had already been concerned about Roxanne, hesitated.

However, Roxanne was the first to move.

He whispered with his lips against Sepia’s ear.

As if he had already read her mind.

“How could I not know?”

What kind of feelings that young males have for you?

After a short whisper, Roxanne pressed his nose to the bridge of her nose and took a deep breath.

“Please show me clearly what kind of body odor you are surrounded by.”

Sepia’s pupils shook at those words.

Because she shared his senses, her range of perception expanded, but in order to detect it, she had to recognize it first. Sepia followed him and took a deep breath, and her lungs were filled with his scent.

'I smell like Roxanne.'

And it was very strong.

It didn't go away even after showering and soaking in rose water for a long time.

It was evidence of the period of liberation they spent together.

When she realized belatedly that this was the reason Elon had covered his respiratory tract earlier, Sepia's face felt hot.

Roxanne left Sepia and passed Etensel.

He was much taller than a fully grown fox, and there was a head difference between him and Etensel.

Etensel's eyebrows narrowed, while Roxanne felt relaxed.

Eventually, the door closed, and Sepia was left with Etensel.

Etensel must have noticed it too.

Roxanne's scent surrounds Sepia.

He must have known it before he came to this room. The entire palace, which had been liberated, was like Roxanne’s territory.

“...You have now become a highness.”

Etensel smiled bitterly.

His chubby cheeks and red eyes were particularly pitiful.

The contrast between their last meeting and this appearance was even more apparent.

“...Why did you come all the way here? I can’t even leave you alone.”

“That doesn’t matter. I just wanted to see you.”

His wet voice blended with his green eyes.

However, the red fox looked determined, as if he would no longer hide his feelings.

“However, I have no intention of forcing my feelings on you. I just wanted to correct the misunderstanding.”

He was telling her that this was not his delusion, but that his feelings were true.

“And I was worried that you might need my help.”

His eyes seemed to know something.

Perhaps he had foreseen this situation.

“...I have to meet the current Empress.”

The security surrounding the palace was tight.

It was nearly impossible to sneak out of this place, where even maids were not allowed, and reach the tower where Titie was imprisoned.

“I have had eyes that were different from other beasts since I was born. Rather than beasts, the reality hidden within them was reflected like an afterimage. That’s why I knew.”

He took a moment to choose his words.

“The fact that His Majesty is closer to a demon beast than a divine beast.”

Previously, it would have been difficult to believe Etensel’s words.

But Sepia also witnessed it.

The wolf with red eyes resembled a hungry ghost.

“I thought Your Highness was human and couldn’t see anything, but I see a string connected to Your Highness.”

“A string?”

“Your Highness is connected to the High Priestess. That’s because the blessing Your Highness received when you were the Empress is acting as a link.”

Sepia’s eyes widened.

Before the High Priestess gave her the blessing, she thought it was just a formal ceremony.

However, the blessing she experienced directly was different.

It was a feeling that couldn’t be explained in words.

However, being blessed didn’t give her any special abilities or noticeable changes.

“He controls the sea, and the sea is water, so Your Highness may be able to use some of the High Priestess’s abilities.”

The High Priest revealed himself using a mirror and water.

His main body always stayed in the sea, but he could communicate with the land using his special abilities.

However, that was a power limited to the High Priestess, and she had never heard of other races being able to control it.

‘...This is something I should think about.’

Sepia felt the seal hidden inside her sleeve.

Like the Drodian that suddenly fell into her hand, she had no idea how the information Etensel had told her would be used.

So, it was a good deal to just get a hint.

“Thank you for telling me.”

“I’m glad if it was of any help to Your Highness.”

Those were the words he had heard from Roxanne before.

However, unlike Roxanne, she was not thrilled or happy at all now.

“I’ll put a pipe in the knight’s mouth and send him out. He’s not related to us.”

“No. I’ll stay here until the incident is resolved. If I leave, I’ll just get questioned more. It’s a shame for my family. So please don’t let me get in trouble.”

Etensel laughed playfully.

It was clearly a serious matter, but she couldn’t get angry at him for covering it up with a smile.

“Then I’ll go back.”

Etensel stepped back calmly, unexpectedly.

As if he had drawn his own line.

Before Roxanne returned, Sepia looked into the mirror in her room.

Her reflection in the mirror seemed particularly unfamiliar today.

'I and the High Priest are connected.'

Was the dream she had in Leopold's territory related to this?

'If what Etensel said was true.'

Then what was that dream?

It was when she thought of the High Priest on Leopold's coast.

At that moment, the mirror seemed to ripple.

'What was that just now?'

Her reflection shook.

When Sepia placed her hand on the mirror, the ripples became a little clearer.

If she could really borrow the High Priest's powers.

'Show me what I want.'

At that moment, Sepia's body was sucked into the mirror.

When she opened her eyes again, the first thing she felt was the damp air and the smell of damp moss.

'Here...'

She could feel the mold growing in the cracks of the old bricks.

When she absentmindedly reached out, something cold was blocking her.

As she thought that, she heard a woman crying from somewhere nearby.

'Woman?'

"Ugh, sob..."

The sound was extremely sorrowful and filled with anger.

When Sepia turned her head following the sound, a pure white figure appeared.

Sitting on a small bed was Tite.

Long, tangled white hair.

The figure, with its emaciated body and strangely swollen belly, looked miserable.

When Sepia was startled by the figure and pressed hard against the glass blocking her way,

'Ugh...!'

Blood flowed from her hand along with a stinging pain.

The glass had sharp cracks.

As soon as Sepia saw her hand bleeding from a cut, she knew that she was inside a broken mirror.
