30. Side story 04
Sophie, lying in bed, clutched the blanket tightly with her blue eyes sparkling like the morning stars.
“Teacher, please tell me again what we talked about yesterday.”
"Which?"
“It’s the story of the girl with a broken leg who escaped from the cabin by fooling the monster. I couldn’t hear the end of it yesterday because of my mother.”
The girl's eyes, which were nagging at her tutor, were completely empty of sleep.
“If I wake up late tomorrow, my mom will scold me.”
“I think it’s better than not being able to sleep because you’re curious.”
Few people could break Sophie's stubbornness. In the warm south of the Carter Duchy, the eldest daughter of a wealthy farmer had changed tutors four times in the past year alone due to her difficult and eccentric personality.
“Miss Claire. Yes? Come on.”
“Yes. What was I talking about yesterday?”
Sophie smiled brightly, revealing a missing front tooth. The stories coming out of the new governess's mouth were all fascinating. She had never heard of a story about a foolish Princess falling in love with an enemy disguised as a gypsy before.
“Letters. Letters the girl wrote before she escaped.”
“Yeah. The first thing the girl who couldn’t leave the castle did was contact her family, who lived far away.”
“To ask for help?”
"No."
“Then why?”
“To avoid danger.”
Warm brown eyes blinked slowly. Sophie listened to her story while tucked into the blanket. It felt like she was entering the cold north wind of a neighboring country.
