IWAEBS - Chapter 86 < Swamp of Illusion >

“Even if you just take a quick look, don’t you think I look more picturesque than Prince Norton?”

He was serious.

“...Oh, right! You're much more picturesque, aren’t you? That’s why I can’t touch Linel’s face sometimes, too?”

I actively supported his opinion.

“Ahem, why?”

“Your face is so painterly that if I touch it, it feels like the paint will really spread? Ohohoho.”

He stared at my face intently. Was I too blatant in my flattery? I was worried that it might have backfired. I should have just done it in moderation... I swallowed hard and waited anxiously for his reaction. After a while, he leaned forward in front of me and whispered a secret.

“As expected, you are objective.”

He was applauding me with his eyes. Huh? This kind of flattery works.

“His face is like that, but Prince Norton doesn’t have any masculinity.”

My mouth moved mechanically.

“I told you before, didn’t I? I said I wanted to give you a dress you don’t wear, even if it’s just a dress you don’t wear. Oh ho ho.”

I had to try my best to please him. That way, I thought, Rosie wouldn't get mad at me as much.

“That's what I'm saying!”

He opened his eyes wide and clinked the teaspoon he was holding against his teacup.

“He looks weak on the outside, so how can he possibly hear compliments when he gets married?”

“What kind of compliment is that?”

“In bed, you know. Like me.”

Linel pressed the tips of his two thumbs against his chest as if making a stamp.

“...Yes, that’s a valid point!”

I quickly raised my thumb and pressed it against his chest, agreeing with him.

“Should I hear a compliment tonight or not?”

He wrapped my thumb in his hand and spoke quietly as if he was talking to himself. It was such an awkward sound coming from such a dignified face that I couldn’t laugh out loud. However, I kept looking at his face because I found his appearance strangely cute and lovely. Even so, his complaints about Rosie’s remarks continued. I nodded unconditionally and put a sweet pie in his mouth.

“It’s probably because Rosie doesn’t have the eye for it yet. She doesn’t know men, she doesn’t know.”

“How could it be that it’s not there? What did she say yesterday... that her heart felt like it was going to burst the moment she saw Prince Norton? Is he a handsome man she can’t find in the Lapion Empire? Haa, this is it.”

His voice rose again.

“Calm down, Your Majesty.”

I quickly put down the cup of tea I was about to drink and patted the back of his hand to suppress his excitement.

“This is the first time in my life that I have ever sat still and heard such unacceptable words.”

"Me too."

“I was quiet because someone else was confessing, but if it was official, I would have said something.”

"Me too."

Yes. Last night, when Rosie told Prince Norton that he was 'a handsome man you wouldn't find in the Lapion Empire', even Prince Norton, who had been frozen, twitched his facial muscles. At the same time, Linel's face twitched, but it was a movement with a different meaning from Prince Norton's. By the way... He didn't like Rosie's words themselves, but ironically, he didn't seem to be particularly impressed by her confessing her love to a Prince from another country.

“Your Majesty, are you really not bothered by the fact that Rosie has feelings for Prince Norton?”

“Surprisingly, that’s true.”

After hearing my question, he thought for a moment, then shrugged his shoulders slightly and answered.

“But still, Rosie is a concubine.”

“That’s the problem.”

He drummed his fingertips on the table, his expression now serious.

“What are you going to say?”

Please, let it pass without incident. Please, let it end as a warning. I clasped my hands together under the table and prayed silently.

“First, let’s talk to both of them.”

“You’re not going to be mad at Rosie, are you?”

I looked at him again and asked cautiously.

“Are I angry? I’m already angry. I’m going to ask her again later who’s more handsome. Without any selfish intentions!”

He propped his elbows on the table again, rested his chin on them, and spoke solemnly.

“...Then you won’t punish your concubine, Rosie, for having feelings for another man, right? Yes?”

“What are you doing?”

His calm but firm voice melted away my worries.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I don’t mind as long as you’re not in love with someone else.”

I jumped up from my chair, walked over to him, sat on his lap, and put both arms around his neck.

“Thank you. My husband is handsome, but how can he have such a handsome heart?”

“Yeah, I envy you too.”

“Yes? Me?”

I buried my face in the nape of his neck, then raised my head and smiled broadly, and asked.

“You have a husband like me.”

“Phew, that’s right. Your Majesty must find it a bit bothersome to have a wife like me.”

"What?"

“Because I keep making life miserable.”

“What does that mean... ahem?!”

I went to war with him right between his lips. It was the only place I could defeat him.

“Ugh, wait a minute, Zelda... If you move like this, I won’t be able to stand it...”

He held my thigh tightly and spoke pleadingly.

“I’m saying this because I don’t think I can stand it if I stop now. So just accept it.”

Our lips met again. As our softnesses tangled, a strange sound was heard along with the morning birdsong. Even our breathing was becoming more intense. Linel whispered as he gently brushed my neck with his lips.

“Zelda, I wonder what it would feel like to receive a compliment in the morning.”

As soon as he finished speaking, he hugged me and placed me on the bed as he spoke again.

“I have to hear it, now...”

His body was already in a position to be praised.

“Why do you look into the mirror like that? Nothing will change.”

Moiya looked at Rosie, who was sitting in front of the dressing table and looking at herself in the mirror, with a pitiful expression, and then whispered to Aoshi.

“Meow. (You know a lot, but you still don’t know that.)”

Aoshi also agreed with Moiya. Last night, when Rosie seemed to be in the best mood, Moiya explained to her what had happened in the temple backyard very dryly, sporadically, and vaguely. When he mentioned that Emperor Linel had happened to show up at the scene where she was confessing her love, her face turned pale. Of course, it was because she was worried about Prince Norton. He also hinted that Emperor Linel had called the two to his office yesterday. Rosie, who knew that the confessor was Prince Norton, fell asleep after worrying about the Prince’s safety all night. Her worries continued until she left the bedroom.

“Why did I put Prince Norton in danger by confessing in front of His Majesty?”

Rosie hoped in her heart that Linel would be generous and forgive Prince Norton. But for some reason, she spent more time in front of the mirror today than usual.

“Anyway, I am a concubine and he is a Prince of another country.”

Since a while ago, Rosie had been mumbling while repeatedly putting in and taking out a large flower-shaped hairpin on her head.

“Besides, he is from the southern continent, where there might be another war.”

No matter how much she and Emperor Linel were not interested in each other, she was still a concubine of a country, so it was fate that she could not be connected to Prince Norton. Regardless of that fact, Rosie's heart kept pounding. She finally stood up, putting a large hairpin in her hair.

“You’ve got a big flower on your head? Wow, it’s crazy... It suits you so well.”

Moiya clapped her hands and praised him.

“Really? I wanted to try it today. Anyway, I’ll go and comfort Prince Norton. Don’t cause any trouble and stay in the bedroom.”

Rosie bent down and gave Moiya and Aoshi a firm warning.

“We will be in peace. Don’t worry.”

'Rosie, worry about yourself.'

Moiya answered confidently, but couldn't bring himself to add anything else.

“I don’t believe it, but I have to go to the main palace first, so I’ll go and see.”

“Meow. (Rosie, can you come back?)”

Aoshi cried sadly.

“I don’t know what the hell is going on. Ugh, this is annoying.”

Contrary to what she had said, Rosie’s steps as she left the bedroom seemed somehow light. As soon as the bedroom door closed, Aoshi immediately pushed open the terrace door with her front paw, indicating her intention to escape.

“Mi-mi-yaong. (I’m going to be out for a few days.)”

No matter how much Aoshi thought about it, it seemed like Moiya had caused a major accident. If all the facts were revealed, Moiya would not be in good hands in Rosie's hands.

“I won’t go. The great wyvern doesn’t run away!”

Moiya, who had been speaking confidently with both hands on his hips, quickly flew towards the bed a few seconds later and disappeared under the bed. Aoshi tilted her head and followed Moiya under the bed.

“Miya... Meow? (Don’t be like that, let’s go out together... Huh? What are you doing?)”

“I’m going to stay here for a while. I think Rosie is going to kill me with her curses.”

Moiya said, curling up inside the eggshell. Inside the basket was the wyvern eggshell that Moiya had been in for 300 years, split in half.

“Hey, can you cover me with the roof before you go out?”

“Meow? (Wouldn’t it be better to hide somewhere else?)”

“Running away is cowardly.”

“Meow... (I guess it’s better than being this stupid...)”

“I told you to cover it up quickly. This is the place where my heart rests.”

Aoshi sighed deeply and lifted the eggshell with both front paws, but accidentally dropped the eggshell.

“Meow! (Sorry!)”

The eggshell fell to the marble floor and shattered into many pieces. Moiya felt as if a 300-year-old house had collapsed overnight.

“What a fucking piece of cotton!”

Moiya clenched his fists and jumped out of the egg again.

“Me, meow. (Sorry, I didn’t do that on purpose.)”

As Aoshi backed out of bed, Moiya scooped up some eggshell crumbs from the floor and threw them at Aoshi, shouting.

“Ah, sir! You’re going to get sprayed too!”

***

After leaving the residence, Rosie headed to the main palace with her servant. The weather was nice today, and the flowers smelled even better. Thinking about it, she felt really refreshed. Without realizing it, she hummed and looked up at the sky, and waved her hand to the birds flying by. Then, she forced herself to lower the corners of her mouth that had been raised.

“This is not the time for me to be like this.”

Prince Norton is in a difficult position because of her, and she's just humming along leisurely. Rosie tried to calm her somewhat excited mood.

“Then why did you confess...”

Tsk, if she gets caught, she'll get caught in front of His Majesty. It was clearly something she said out of worry, but she couldn't understand why the corners of her mouth kept going up. Prince Norton was in a very awkward position because the Emperor's concubine confessed to him.

“But it’s not a crime to like someone, right? Why don’t you just write a letter instead? Then things wouldn’t have gotten this bad.”

Rosie was genuinely worried about Prince Norton.

“His Majesty won’t punish him severely, right? It won’t be something like throwing him in an underground prison for a few days...”

As she said, the image of Prince Norton sitting alone in the prison cell, thinking of him, flashed through her mind. She frowned and shook her head. Emperor Linel had no interest in her. Neither did she.

“Are you just calling me out of caution?”

Rosie hoped her guess was right. Even though she had never touched His Majesty's hand, she was still a concubine. And she reminded herself that she was in no position to accept Prince Norton's feelings.

“How should I comfort him? No, it’s better to be cold to him.”

Rosie made up her mind and made a resolution. But on the other hand, she still felt bitter.

“Your Highness Rosie.”

“Oh my, Prince Norton.”

The person who had been worrying her since last night had appeared. Rosie tried to smile, but instead, she pursed her lips and repeated to herself. A cold expression, a cold expression. A proud expression.

“Are you waiting for me?”

“...Yes? Isn’t Your Highness on your way to the main palace right now? I think we might have some business to attend to today.”

“Oh, right.”

Rosie replied with a fresh expression. Prince Norton's face looked rough as if he hadn't slept well the night before.

“Your Highness, since we’ve already met, let’s go together. Let’s talk about the things we couldn’t finish talking about yesterday.”

“I can’t help it since we met like this. I like it.”

"...Yes."

The two began to head to the main palace together. Prince Norton glanced at Rosie and walked at her slow pace. No matter how much he thought about it, her courage last night was truly admirable. Despite being a concubine, she boldly confessed her love to a foreign Prince. He didn’t know it when he met her a couple of times before, but when he saw her again today, she seemed more confident.

'She's a woman who doesn't care about what other people think.'

Prince Norton thought as he looked at the large, flower-shaped, rustic hairpin on the side of her head. Rosie clicked her tongue inwardly as she felt Prince Norton's eyes constantly glancing at her.

'Your Highness, no matter how much you look at me with such longing eyes, I cannot accept your heart.'

Prince Norton, seeing her slumped shoulders, also felt sorry inwardly.

'Your Highness, you showed great courage yesterday, but each of you has your own place, so you must abandon vain love.'

They were each sending comforting glances to each other.

“You look like you haven’t slept at all?”

After walking in silence for a while, Rosie was the first to speak to Prince Norton.

“If you slept well after going through that yesterday, you’re not even human.”

The Prince deliberately answered in a more subdued tone, feeling sorry.

“Ha, I hope not. I feel really uneasy in many ways.”

What should I do? Prince Norton's face has become half-shaven because of her. There was a hint of the winner's composure in Rosie's worried eyes. Prince Norton, who could not have known this fact, was touched by Rosie's words.

“Your Highness Rosie is very considerate.”

Even though she knew that it was an impossible relationship, she bravely confessed and was called to the office, but she was worried about him. The misunderstandings between them flowed like a stream and gradually reached a vast ocean.

“Um... I know this isn’t the right time to say this, but there’s something I really want to tell you.”

Before arriving at the main palace and entering the lobby, Rosie. stopped Prince Norton's steps with a determined voice.

“Go ahead, Your Highness Rosie.”

Prince Norton looked at her with a generous gaze. If it was a request to hold her hand, he would do that much. Even a hug, he would gladly do it.

“Yesterday’s incident happened yesterday, and I have a favor to ask of you, Your Highness.”

Rosie brought up the matter in a straightforward manner.
