INAS - Chapter 74

'Is that crazy?'

If it were the days when you ran wild, not knowing the fear of the world and relying on the backing of the trash of the past, then it would be understandable, but how dare you smile like that after losing everything you enjoyed and becoming a slave to the temple.

I let out a laugh at the absurdity, but strangely enough, my body was stiffening.

Somehow, the atmosphere felt ominous.

I don't know exactly what it is, but I have a feeling that something really big is going to happen.

'What on earth gave that kid confidence?'

I was busy thinking while feeling the tension enveloping my whole body.

The Emperor next to him muttered.

“That woman is the saint’s half-sister... no, isn’t she the daughter of Mushikan? But why is that woman here...”

He tilted his head as if he was puzzled but soon started walking briskly.

I, who came to my senses late, also hurriedly followed him.

'It's ominous, it's ominous, so we need to assess the situation first.'

As we ran toward her, Melina bowed her head politely.

“His Majesty the Emperor, His Highness the Crown Prince, and Lady Shayne, I greet you.”

For a moment, I burst out laughing.

There was a lot of intention behind Melina's words when she called me Shayne instead of a Saintess.

'Look at this.'

As I was looking at Melina with a puzzled expression, the Emperor next to me couldn't help but chime in, unable to contain his curiosity.

“Aren’t you the daughter of Mushikan? Your name is... hm, Eliza?”

“...This is Melina, Your Majesty.”

Melina's brow furrowed slightly, perhaps offended that he could not remember her name, but the Emperor responded with an indifferent expression.

“Oh, I see. I’m sorry. I’m not so idle as to remember the name ofa sinner’s daughter.”

It may not have been his intention to ignore her. Melina's status was simply too insignificant to be engraved in the Emperor's mind.

So the Emperor continued asking questions without any hesitation.

“Yes, Melina. You were sent to the temple as a servant along with Mushikan when his crimes were revealed... Why are you here when you should be at the temple?”

It was a question everyone was curious about.

I, the Crown Prince, the Emperor, and the masses surrounding us all waited for her to open her mouth.

Melina, who had been enjoying the gaze with a faint smile on her face, finally opened her mouth after a long time.

But what came out of his mouth was... truly shocking.

“This is Melina, I have received a revelation from the goddess.”

For a moment, the surroundings were filled with silence.

If it was a revelation, it meant that she had heard the words of a goddess, in short, that she was a divine being.

While everyone was gaping in amazement, the Emperor also asked, unable to hide his surprise.

“What, revelation? Are you saying that the goddess herself has come to you?”

“Yes, Your Majesty. It was my honor that the goddess Hethel came to me in my dream last night.”

“Huh. The daughter of a sinner receives revelations from a goddess? What is this...?”

The Emperor blinked as if he was shocked and asked urgently.

“So, what revelation did the goddess give you?”

“Yes, the goddess worries about the people of the empire who are suffering in these turbulent times and tells me...”

“Yeah, what to you!”

“That’s... I’m embarrassed to say it myself...”

Melina, who had been blushing shyly, soon spoke in a small but firm voice as if she had made up her mind.

“I have been given the mission to help the suffering people of the empire by following the will of the goddess.”

What a shocking statement.

"Ha."

I burst out laughing without realizing it.

'What nonsense are you talking about?'

Of course, there was no reason why Melina should not have received the revelation.

Because the right to receive the revelations of the Goddess was not given based on one's status.

In fact, among the Saintesses throughout history who were said to be daughters of goddesses, many were of commoner origin.

The reason I still don't believe that is because of Melina's past behavior.

“Hey, where in the world is there a God? Only the weak believe in such things. I’d rather sleep.”

It was Melina who neglected the gods so much that she did not even go to the temple on the goddess's birthday, the biggest national holiday in the empire.

But what kind of mission is that to a child like that?

It was clear that that was a blatant lie.

As I was laughing, the Emperor asked in a bewildered voice.

“Ha, does that mean the goddess has appointed you as a Saintess?”

“I am ashamed to say it, Your Majesty.”

“Huh, what nonsense! There is a Saintess here, so how could you be chosen as the daughter of the goddess? Even if you are a nobody, how dare you impersonate a Saintess? Do you really think you will come to your senses only after being hung in the square?”

The Emperor roared. It was a majesty I had not seen in a long time.

But Melina opened her mouth without being intimidated at all.

“Your Majesty, why do you offend the goddess with such blasphemous words?”

“What, blasphemous?”

The Emperor let out a hollow laugh as if he was in awe.

Melina, who was looking at him with sad eyes, bit her lips and opened her mouth.

“Although I am of humble birth, it is true that I have received revelations from the goddess. But how can you persecute me, the daughter of the goddess, with such doubts?”

The surroundings, which had been noisy for a moment, became silent again.

A slave who calls herself the daughter of a goddess and even lectures the Emperor.

Everyone had a dumbfounded expression.

“Ha, have you ever seen such a cheeky woman?”

The Emperor also clutched the back of his neck with a flushed face as if he was in a state of shock.

However, he was somewhat discouraged by Melina's confident attitude and was unable to shout at her like he had done before.

He just laughed in vain, but after a while, he came to his senses and asked.

“Yes. Let’s say you are truly the daughter of the goddess. Then who is the woman next to me right now? The woman who has saved the empire from countless crises and the lives of countless people! Are you saying that the goddess has sent two Saintesses to this land?”

“Well, I don’t know if the goddess really gave us two daughters or if one of them disobeyed her will and usurped the constellation.”

Melina answered in a gloomy voice and stared at me silently. It was as if she was saying, 'I'm confident, but are you?'

I could hear whispers here and there, wondering if I was the only one who noticed the meaning of those eyes.

“What does that mean? Does that mean our Saintess is fake?”

“What the heck is that...”

“Wait a minute, didn’t you say that some kind of strange plant appeared in the capital yesterday? On the leaves of that strange plant...”

“Hey, didn’t you say that it was a plot by someone to frame the Saintess? Didn’t you hear how furious the Saintess was?”

“That’s right. How many miracles has the Saintess performed so far? How can it be fake?”

“Yes, you have received His Holiness’s approval... Look, the Goddess’s representative is also guarding the Saintess’s side.”

“But isn’t it true that that woman also performed miracles?”

“Yeah. You all saw it. That woman stopped the storm and healed the injured.”

“Besides, there was clearly a pattern on that woman’s forehead...”

For a moment, my expression hardened at the murmurs I heard coming from all over the place.

“Wait a minute, what do you mean this kid stopped the storm and healed the wounded? And what’s with that symbol?”

“Sir, Saintess. That is...”

The crowd, who had been looking puzzled by my question, soon began to hesitate and explain the situation.

Everything from the fact that Melina appeared in a terrible storm causing numerous casualties, to the fact that the storm stopped when she prayed, to the fact that she went around to find the injured people one by one, holding their hands and praying for them, and that their injuries were healed, and finally, the fact that the forehead of the woman performing this miracle had a vivid symbol of the goddess engraved on it.

After hearing all that, I couldn't hide my embarrassment.

That would be the case since only a Saintess could bear the mark of a goddess.

'But how about Melina...'

I wasn't the only one who felt embarrassed.

“Huh, what the heck is this...”

The Emperor, who had been looking back and forth between Melina and me with an expression of disbelief, touched his forehead. It seemed as if he simply could not understand the situation.

He groaned and then let out a short sigh and asked.

“I will ask you one last time. Are you sure that you have received the revelation from the goddess?”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

Melina's eyes, which met the Emperor's gaze firmly, were still full of dignity.

He opened his mouth as if he had made up his mind, with a troubled expression on his face.

“Good, then let’s go to the temple. I will have to verify with His Holiness whether you are truly the goddess’ daughter. No objections, right?”

“Of course, Your Majesty.”

Melina's face still had a confident smile as she answered.
