ASP - Chapter 34 < Flame (3) >

Black asked Liene, who was shaking her shoulders.

“Are you scared?”

“...”

She couldn't say yes or no.

“Still, I endure it.”

And then his lips lowered. Liene gasped for a moment. The feeling of invisible lips touching the back of her neck was indescribably unfamiliar. Maybe it was because no one had ever touched a place with their lips before. It felt like Black was opening up somewhere tightly hidden and pulling it out completely, leaving a mark on it. But she couldn’t say no to it...

It was crazy. The slow sensation of his lips moving along her neck felt like her skin was on fire. At first, she thought her shoulders were shaking, but now her entire body was shaking. No matter how much she bit her lip, she didn’t think she would be able to relieve the stimulation he was leaving behind.

“...”

Finally, a gasp came. Only then did his lips part. But even after the kiss ended, Black didn’t move away but instead wrapped his arms around Liene.

"Why..."

Liene opened her mouth in confusion, but he put strength into his arms and made her lie down. A familiar blanket covered her body. Black lay down next to her.

“I’ll sleep well here too.”

This wasn't a request for permission either. But contrary to his forced words, he kept his distance outside the blankets, where their bodies would not accidentally touch. He was affectionate but forceful, and forceful but ultimately affectionate.

“...And you didn’t even cover yourself with a blanket?”

“I don’t wish for that.”

“It must be cold.”

“I have a lot of body heat, so it’s okay.”

Instead, he turned his body to the side and made himself look at Liene.

“Yes, now.”

The side of her face stung. Liene stared at the ceiling, not having the confidence to face him. The tip of her nose was already cold.

“Then... please bring a blanket.”

Liene couldn't see the seat next to her very well, but it seemed like Black was shrugging his shoulders.

“Do you mean side by side?”

“It’s going to happen anyway.”

“It's one thing for you to cry, it's another for the princess to say it's okay.”

“What’s the difference? The result is the same.”

“...Is it okay if it’s the same?”

“It’s already the same. But there’s no need to sleep in the cold for no reason.”

“...The Princess is a strange person.”

The words were so soft that they almost sounded like a sigh. Liene wanted to tell him the same thing.

To me, you are like that. You are so strange.

Whether he is polite or rude, affectionate or cold, it is all like him, so she just accepts it.

“Then just stay.”

When it didn't look like Black would bring the blanket, Liene got up from the bed.

“Where are you going?”

“It’s a closet.”

Liene went to the closet behind the bed and took out an extra blanket that she used in colder seasons. Liene spread out the blanket and covered Black, who was frozen for some unknown reason. Now, he would no longer be cold next to her. She felt relieved as if she had done her job.

“I think I can sleep comfortably now.”

“...”

Then Black muttered something to himself. Thinking that he might be saying something strange like before, Liene didn't bother to ask.

“Then sleep well.”

Two people lying in the same bed, each covered with a different blanket, closed their eyes similarly. The strange night flowed into a strange dawn. The first one to fall asleep was Liene.

***

The thought that occurred to her when she opened her eyes was that it was too warm. That couldn't be. The dawn at this time of year was usually cold. Her nose was cold, so her head was still asleep, but her body woke up first. It was the season when she would linger in the blanket, neither asleep nor awake, and force herself to open her eyes when she heard Madam Flambard's footsteps.

“...”

Liene blinked open her eyelids. And she realized that she was deeply embraced by Black. The blankets that they had been sleeping under separately had become one for some unknown reason, and just as Black had said that his body was hot, the chest that her cheek was touching was incredibly warm for the season.

“Ugh...”

First, a surprised sound was about to come out. Before that, Liene quickly bit her lip. Black was fast asleep. There was a small wrinkle between his eyebrows. Liene realized that he was exhausted from the injury he had yesterday and that he desperately needed rest...

Let’s not wake him up. This person is sick right now. He’s sick. We should let him sleep when he can...

But she couldn’t believe how he ended up sleeping like this. She had clearly covered him with a separate blanket when he slept, lying flat on his back. She was so nervous about Black being next to her that she placed her hand on her chest and couldn’t move. When on earth did that happen?

She was surprised that she didn’t wake up even once when someone else was hugging her. Even now, she was surprised that the position in which she was hugged was comfortable and cozy as if she was born that way, which made it even more unbelievable.

What is this... What is this... I don’t hate it.

She didn’t hate the sound of his even breathing against her face. The sound of his hair rustling every now and then as he tossed his head was the same. The strength of the two arms that wrapped around her tightly but not painfully wasn’t bad, and the sound of his pounding heart wasn’t bad either.

Liene didn’t hate the fact that she could see Black’s eyes as he fell asleep. Now that she looked, his eyelashes were long. His tall nose was straight as if drawn with a ruler. His pale lips had very distinct lines instead. Looking at those lips reminded her of the kiss he had given her yesterday. The tingling heat that started from the back of her neck and spread through her body came back to life.

“...”

The faint tension spreading through her entire body, and the fact that she couldn't move because of that tension wasn't bad either. She didn't hate any of it. The only thing and didn't know was why...

I... I don't know. Why I don't hate it. Why do I want to stay like this any longer? I can't move my body, it's suffocating, but I don't hate any of that. It's just too weird...

“Umm...”

Black tossed and turned in his sleep. The arms that were wrapped around her body gained strength and he pressed closer to her. His nose, which she had been absent-mindedly admiring just a moment ago, brushed past her forehead. It felt like his lips would touch her eyebrow at any moment. Was he trying to wake up?

Liene forgot to blink and studied Black’s closed eyes right in front of her nose. She wished he could sleep a little longer. She wish he could stay like this a little longer...

At that moment, startled by the unconscious thoughts, Black opened his eyes as if it were a lie.

“...!”

“...”

Liene's eyes widened, while Black's eyes narrowed. He also noticed that his posture was very different from when he fell asleep yesterday.

“...Did I do this?”

"I don't know."

“I didn’t know you had this habit.”

Surprised, neither of them stepped forward to change positions. They remained facing each other, hugging each other. Liene thought it was strange that Black didn’t blink when he looked at her. However, she didn’t realize that she was also looking at Black like that.

“I think this is the first time I’ve seen you this close.”

“...That’s right.”

They were so close that even though they were still, their eyes seemed to be touching each other.

“There’s a scar here too.”

Time passed very slowly. Liene, whose eyes were sore, blinked first and discovered a small, barely visible wound on Black's eyebrow.

"Where?"

"Here."

The tip of Liene's index finger touched a small wound that was slightly whiter than the surrounding skin.

“Are there any scars there?”

It was a face that said he had no idea.

“It’s so small. You can’t even see it well.”

If she hadn't been looking at his face so closely, she wouldn't have noticed it the whole time.

“The Princess has a dot here.”

Black tapped the area below her earlobe, near where her neckline began. It was also a place she didn't even know existed.

“That place is invisible to me. What does it look like?”

“It’s about the same color as hair and very small. Not many people will recognize it.”

“Yes... This is the first time I’ve heard of there being a dot there.”

Black was the first. Maybe he was the only one. There couldn't be anyone else who would stare at her face so intently. The early morning that should have been cold was warm, and there was someone in the empty seat next to her. Liene was staring at someone's face without getting tired of it, and so was Blacm. They were searching for traces that only they knew each other. Liene didn't hate any of it.

“Are there any more?”

“If you want, I can look for it.”

“Yes. Please find it.”

Swish.

Black’s face came a little closer. He didn’t let go of the arm he was holding onto Liene but only moved his hand to push the hair to one side. The side of her face and neck were completely exposed. One finger slid down her jawline.

“Not up to here.”

Black ran his fingers down the nape of her neck, which was covered by her pajamas.

“Can I look into it further?”

“...”

Those words somehow took her breath away.

“Then... I have to pull down my clothes.”

"Yes."

"Therefore..."

“Isn’t that okay?”

“...”

His fingers traced a slow line along the edge of her pajamas. The blue eyes, so close today, made no attempt to hide the explicit meaning contained in the gesture.

“No, you can’t.”

So she knew. Whatever his original intention, revenge or whatever, he wanted her. Her heart wouldn't be much different. Regardless of what he was going to do in Nauk, she wanted him. She wanted him to want her. Would this heart be poisonous? Or the opposite?

Liene wanted to know. Desperately.

“Right now... it’s so bright.”

“If it’s not bright, you won’t be able to find it.”

“It doesn’t have to be bright... If you look closely, you might be able to find it.”

“Are you saying I can take a closer look?”

“If only it weren’t so bright as it is now.”

“...”

The fingers that were tracing the line of the pajamas stopped. An unknown thought settled on Black’s eyebrows. He frowned and slowly rubbed Liene’s cheek with his thumb.

“I wish the Princess knew what I just said.”

“I know... don’t I?”

“No, you don’t know.”

Black sighed lightly.

“So you’re still doing this even after opening your eyes. You don’t even know what the Princess looks like to me right now.”

“How does it... look?”

Suddenly, the gestures stopped.

“You probably don’t want to hear it.”

“Does it look bad?”

“Because it’s the opposite.”

That was a very strange story to Liene.

“It looks good, so why don’t you want to hear it?”

“...”

Instead of answering, Black sighed again.

“That’s why I don’t know.”

“Then you can just tell me.”

“It’s not something worth talking about.”

"Why?"

In an instant, Black's gaze changed.

“That’s why.”

The hand that had been touching her cheek seemed to be touching the bed. She thought he might wake up. In fact, Black lifted his body that was lying on his side.

“...!”

But he didn't get up. He was lying flat on his back, covering Liene with his body, with Liene trapped between his arms.

“Do you understand now?”

“I... I think... I know.”

“No. You still don’t know.”

“No. I...”

Black snickered as if that couldn't be happening.

“If you knew, you would have hit me and run away already.”

"Yes?"

“It's late.”

He suddenly lowered his head. Black’s upper lip came between Liene’s slightly parted lips. The lips parted. The next moment, her eyes closed without her knowing.

“...”

The kiss that started out slow and gentle enough to be tantalizing at first suddenly became a torrential downpour. Two arms wrapped around Black’s neck. Black’s arms wrapped around Liene’s shoulders and back. The positions changed. Black rolled over while holding Liene, and this time Liene was on top of him, pressing him down with her body. The position was so messy that her knees were pressing against his thighs.

"For a moment..."

Liene took advantage of the gap between their lips to take a deep breath.

“Just a minute. Put your legs...”

“The legs?”

“I thought you might get sick.”

"Not at all."

Black's large hand wrapped around the back of her head and pulled her towards him.
