IWLUBCD - Chapter 42

'Carsis?'

Is this a dream?

Could it be that the guilt towards Carsis has become a real thing and is appearing before my eyes?

I slowly closed and opened my eyes repeatedly as if I couldn't believe what I was seeing with my own eyes.

But nothing changed.

Because Carsis was still sending persistent gazes through the crowd of people.

‘Why, here...’

Wasn't it in the basement?

Did you run away?

Or maybe he wasn't caught in the first place?

Endless questions plagued my mind, one after another.

It's the middle of a wedding, and I don't even realize that the Crown Prince's lips are getting close.

Ernest didn't know what I was thinking.

He was just being true to his feelings at the moment.

And so the lips of the two people covered each other.

The warmth that covers your lips. And the hot breath that seeps in between them.

Even though I and Ernest were sharing each other's warmth, my gaze was focused on one place.

So much so that it almost creates the illusion that I am kissing Carsis.

When I first discovered Carsis, the feeling I had was relief.

It seemed as if Leila and the Crown Prince had been mistaken because Carsis appeared to be completely unharmed.

'Thank god.'

I was worried that he might have been subjected to some kind of harsh torture.

Although I couldn't see it in detail because it was far away, I was relieved that there were no major wounds.

I wanted to meet Carsis quickly and talk to him.

How did you end up in the palace?

How are things going in the palace?

Are there any injuries?

There were so many things I wanted to ask him.

'Where on earth did he go?'

As soon as the main meal was over, I walked towards where Carsis was.

But as if he had never been there, he had already disappeared a long time ago.

I looked around here and there, wondering if he had left any traces, but there was nothing out of the ordinary.

It was clear that he had come to see me, but I became anxious because he had disappeared without a trace like a mirage.

The rebellion broke out while the wedding reception was in full swing.

It started with an ear-piercing scream.

Before the banquet even started.

Right now was the only time I could escape.

'I have to find Carsis by any means necessary and escape the palace together.'

Now that I've seen Carsis' face.

I had no intention of leaving this place alone.

The time of contact with Renaeus is two hours from now.

I planned to disguise myself by changing into a maid's outfit and escape the palace using a secret passage they had prepared.

I looked at the Duke and Duchess talking with other nobles.

They were celebrating the wedding of their only daughter, unaware of the tragedy that was to come.

'They'll be okay.'

Preparations have already been completed to evacuate the Duke and Duchess.

I remembered the conversation I had had with Isaac a few days ago.

[Please set fire to the Duke of Cretian’s residence. However, not the main building, but the eastern wing. There aren’t many people coming and going there right now. Please do your best to avoid hurting anyone.]

I couldn't forget the look in Isaac's eyes as he treated me like I was crazy.

That makes sense, because what kind of woman would ask for her house to be burned down on her wedding day?

'But only then will they leave the palace.'

It seemed like it would take a major disaster, like a house fire, to get them out of the house on their daughter's wedding day.

By the time the Duke and Duchess returned to the mansion and put out the fire, they would have noticed that there had been a rebellion in the palace.

I just hoped that the two of them would just leave the capital.

Even if the Duchess doesn't know, the Duke is a rational person and will be able to face reality coolly.

Even if they went to the palace, they wouldn't be able to save Elizabeth.

It was when a bitter smile spread across my lips.

The Duke and Duchess approached, their eyes locked with mine.

“Ellie. No, I guess I should call you Her Highness the Crown Princess now.”

The Duke said, grumbling.

“Crown Princess. Please call me by my name, Father.”

“Now, I can’t do that to the Crown Princess of a respectable empire.”

In contrast to his firm voice, his eyes looked joyful.

It seemed that I was quite happy to have become the Crown Princesses'.

I smiled happily, matching my father's example.

Then suddenly, I noticed the bracelet the Duke was wearing on his wrist.

The bracelet, made of colorful beads, had a design that only children would make.

Was I looking too closely?

The Duke, noticing my gaze, said.

“Do you remember? It’s the bracelet that Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess gave me on my birthday.”

“Me?”

“Yes. You may not remember now, but when you were little, you used to sew them one by one with your little hands.”

The Duke spoke softly as if lost in memories.

'It was a bracelet that Elizabeth made herself.'

So it looks like he wore that bracelet on purpose to my wedding.

I thought he was just happy to have become his daughter the Crown Princess.

He too, like the Duchess, must have felt sad about sending his only daughter away.

My heart was touched by the sight of the Duke and Duchess who loved me.

And on the other hand, I envied Elizabeth. She must have grown up happily under such loving parents.

It was when a dark aura came over my face.

The Duchess, who had been watching us, asked.

“By the way, where is His Majesty the Emperor? I wanted to pay my respects.”

“His Majesty the Emperor?”

I too followed the Duchess and looked around.

But the Emperor was nowhere to be seen.

“Maybe His Majesty just taking a short break? There’s another party in the evening.”

“Oh my. Come to think of it, shouldn’t you get some rest too? You have to dance with His Highness the Crown Prince at the reception.”

The Duchess then seemed to remember and pushed me back.

“You’ll be bothered by more people during the reception. Go and get some rest.”

“...Yes. That’s right.”

Now it was time to say goodbye to them.

I turned my head and looked at the Crown Prince talking to others.

Just a little while ago, we swore before God that we would be together for the rest of our lives.

That vow is meaningless, for soon we will have to say goodbye forever.

Guilt and regret simultaneously weighed on her.

'It was only for a short while, but it was fun. And.'

Sorry.

I whispered quietly in my heart.

'Goodbye everyone.'

So I said goodbye to them alone.

***

'Where the hell are you?'

It's already been 30 minutes since I started searching for Carsis.

Contrary to expectations that I would find him near the Great Hall, I couldn't find even a single strand of Carsis' hair.

Normally, I would have just been waiting for Linneas in the lounge set up in the Lily Palace by now.

Before I knew it, I was stirring up the palace where I had come to find Carsis.

My pace became more hurried as the time passed longer than expected.

I wondered if he had escaped from the palace, but the palace security was tighter than ever, so he couldn't have escaped without any preparation.

I was lost in thought and pondered over where Carsis might be.

Then suddenly a place flashed through my mind.

'No way.'

Is it in the Emperor's basement?

The Great Hall was also close to the Sollerian Palace, and I thought that if he had come from the basement in the first place, he might have gone back.

‘What should I do...’

I don't know about anywhere else, but I never wanted to go there again.

I, who had been hesitating for a while while biting my nails, raised my head as if I had made up my mind.

'If you're worried, just go and come back quickly!'

The only silver lining was that all the palace servants were gathered in the Great Hall because of the wedding.

First of all, seeing Carsis escape from the Sollerian Palace means that the security there has been slightly relaxed.

I, whose resolve had been strengthened, turned around.

And as she expected, the security at Sollerian Palace was lax.

'It's a little strange.'

Originally, it would have been right for the security of the place where the Emperor resided to be strengthened as more people entered the palace.

Is it because the Emperor is not in the palace?

I, who had been tilting my head in puzzlement, shook my head.

'Now is not the time to think about useless things.'

I need to meet Carsis as soon as possible.
