INAS - Chapter 20

The bustling square was instantly filled with silence.

Not only the crowd but also the Emperor who passed the verdict looked extremely embarrassed.

“What do you mean, take it away?”

That's understandable because not long ago I was the one raising my voice to demand that the culprit who angered the goddess be punished.

But why did this sudden change in position occur?

“Do you think the punishment I gave him is too light?”

I nodded my head in silence at the Emperor's question full of doubt, and bowed my head sadly.

“No matter how great the sin, he was someone I served as a father my entire life. Although they were of low status, I considered them as family. How could I just watch them die? Please show mercy and reduce their punishment.”

My words drew exclamations here and there.

“Oh my, look at that silky heart.”

“How can you think that way about someone who not only killed your parents but even tried to kill you?”

“The daughter of the goddess is indeed a different person.”

The crowd seemed impressed with my willingness to spare the scum, and so did the Emperor.

“Whether I like it or not, we have lived as a family under the same roof for over a dozen years. How could we not be miserable?”

He nodded as if he understood what I was thinking and asked me subtly.

“What punishment do you wish to give to them?”

After a moment of silence with a pained expression on my face at those words, I soon opened my mouth as if I had made up my mind.

“How about giving them a chance to atone for their sins by demoting them to slavery and forcing them to serve in the temple?”

“Hmm, I think the punishment is absurdly light compared to the crime committed...”

The Emperor, who was tapping the armrest of the throne as if embarrassed, asked again.

“Can you really be satisfied with that level of punishment?”

“Yes, Your Majesty. Although they are people who have committed unforgivable sins, I believe it is right to give them another chance, as they are also beings born with the blessings of the goddess.”

The Emperor hesitated for a moment at my words, then nodded.

“Very well, then I will accept your wishes and end this by demoting their status to slaves and sending them to the temple as slaves.”

At the Emperor's declaration, Trash and the two appendages breathed a sigh of relief.

And it was the same for me.

'I've been through so much, I can't just kill you like this.'

I will keep you by my side until you are old and shit on the wall, and make you pay for your sins.

But who knows what's really on my mind?

“Oh my God, how can they be so merciful to people who killed their own parents and took their place to live comfortably!”

“As expected, she is a Saintess!”

“Yes, she is a Saintess, so she can think like that. She is truly an angel.”

The crowd unanimously praised me.

Only one, except the messenger.

“Frozen to death with an angelic heart! He is Satan, Satan. You idiots!”

The lonely truth that flowed from the messenger's mouth was left floating in the air without reaching anyone's ears.

After the trial, they were dragged away by the knights.

The departure of the scum who had gone from being the highest authority in the empire, excluding the royal family, to now being a lowly slave, was truly miserable.

'Oh, yes.'

So much so that I was humming in delight.

That was when I was laughing inwardly at the defeat of the trash.

The Emperor, who was sitting on the highest throne, got up and came up to the podium.

“Those who angered the goddess and brought disaster to Catalonia have been duly punished. I offer my deepest condolences to the people of my empire and Princess Veloce who have suffered from the evil schemes of evildoers.”

The crowd's expressions became solemn at the Emperor's solemn words.

That would be the case because everyone suffered so much because of the disaster that struck without warning.

Farmers had to watch as their crops were destroyed by sudden climate change, and those who made a living from tourism had to swallow their tears as they looked at their empty shops.

Some people had to leave their villages where they had lived their entire lives, their homes blown away by the volcanic ash, while others lost their beloved family members and friends to unknown infectious diseases.

As memories of the hardships they had endured flashed through their minds, the crowd could not stop their tears from flowing.

The Emperor, who had been quietly staring at them, opened his mouth again.

“But we can’t just give up forever. Now we have to move forward again.”

Oh.

I couldn't help but exclaim in admiration at the Emperor's speech, which was more powerful than I had expected.

'But I guess the Emperor is still the Emperor.'

Well, it would be strange if he couldn't do that much considering he was born into royalty and that's what he's seen and learned his whole life.

'In that sense, our trash is truly amazing.'

Born into such a prestigious family, with one of the empire's greatest elites as a father, and trained to be a successor his entire life, the only thing he knows how to do at his age is eat and poop.

'Grandma was such a smart person... Who on earth does that piece of trash resemble?'

At that moment, when I tilted my head because I couldn't understand at all, the Emperor took a moment to catch his breath and continued speaking.

“Of course, it will not be easy to overcome the disaster that devastated the empire for 13 years and regain its former glory. But don’t worry.”

He spoke firmly and then quickly stretched out his hand and pointed somewhere.

“The daughter of the goddess Hethel will be with us!”

...right here, me.

'Why is that guy, who was doing well, tripping me up again?'

After all, it was natural that the Saintess had returned and announced it to all the people of the empire.

But the reason I feel so uneasy is simply because I am not a true Saintess.

“Princess Veloce, please come forward.”

I swallowed a sigh and stood up at the Emperor's instruction.

“Wow!”

With every step I took, the excited cheers of the crowd followed.

Finally, I arrived at the Emperor's side and stopped walking, and the Emperor grabbed my hand tightly.

“I think you all already know. Although it has been somewhat delayed due to dealing with some unpleasant matters, I would like to take this opportunity to announce this to the people of the Empire.”

A silence that weighs down on my shoulders to the point of suffocation.

But that only lasted for a moment.

“Princess Shayne Veloce, successor to the Veloce duchy and the last applicant for the abolition of the throne, has been appointed as the 29th Saintess of Catalonia!”

“Wow!”

As soon as the Emperor raised his hand, a thunderous roar erupted.

“Welcome the new Saintess!”

“May the goddess Hethel's blessings be upon Catalonia and the Catalans once again!”

“Eternal glory to Catalonia!”

They were shouting with excited faces, and soon, without saying who would go first, they started to lie down on the floor one by one.

As if I had welcomed a goddess.

Those who would not bow down even to the Emperor willingly kneel before me.

If it had been a common swindler, he would have been so shocked that he wouldn't even be able to raise his head.

But I wasn't.

'I haven't forgotten how you mocked my death.'

The voice that laughed at me for being chosen as a public servant and becoming food for lions was still vivid in my ears.

These are the people who praised me so much when I gave them the relief food and money but then changed their attitude as if nothing had happened when I was in a difficult situation.

Why should I feel guilty because of them?

Thanks to that, I was able to shamelessly pull my lips in without any hesitation.

“I, Shayne Veloce, am honored to have become the Saintess of Catalonia by following the will of the Goddess. I will dedicate my body and soul to help Catalonia regain its former glory.”

“Wow!”

“Long live the Saintess!”

“Catalon back to the goddess’ embrace!”

“For the revival of Catalonia!”

The crowd could not contain their joy and cheered continuously.

The Emperor, who could not hide his delight at the sight, soon patted my shoulder and said.

“You’ve had a hard time, Saintess. You must have been very upset about what happened at Mushikan.”

“Don’t worry. It’s my job to appease the anxiety of the imperial people.”

“You really are a Saintess. Your size is different. You even prayed for the enemies who killed your parents. Huh?”

The Emperor burst into hearty laughter.

“Yes. Now that we’ve announced this to the people of the empire, let’s go get something to eat.”

“Thank you for your kind words, but I will return to the temple.”

“Why, is there something urgent? The disaster has stopped now, so I don’t think there’s anything particularly busy.”

“Of course, but no one knows what will happen in the future. I plan to pray to the goddess with all my heart.”

Of course, it was a lie.

'The goddess will be very pleased with the prayers offered by an impostor.'

I just wanted to quickly get back to the main temple and train the trash.

“Then I will go back now, Your Majesty.”

Just as I was about to leave after politely bowing to the Emperor,

“If you don’t feel like eating, how about tea?”

A heavy bass sound attacked my back without warning.
