IARMDH - Chapter 108

“This is what the medium I met in the South introduced me to.”

“Yes.”

Lionel rolled his eyes incessantly, wondering how he could get rid of Marquis Cain Mosley, who was about to settle down in his townhouse.

It was impossible to suck blood because the security guards that Cain had brought were standing guard all over the townhouse.

They say that slaves are the property of their masters, but even so, they cannot drink slave blood in front of the police.

'I have to get those guys out of my house quickly.'

In order to do that, it would have been better to actively cooperate with the investigation. And Cain had figured out Lionel’s psychology and was using it effectively in the investigation.

“So, have you ever met the psychic who sold the youth-absorbing elixir?”

“Yes, yes. It was so dark that I couldn’t see his face very well, but yes, he looked young. Eighteen? Seventeen? Something like that.”

Lionel, seeing the wrinkled back of his hand, became impatient and started blurting out things that weren't even asked.

If the shaman who sold the medicine was caught, it would be impossible to buy the medicine anymore, but it seemed like he didn't think about that.

'Let's give it a little more stimulation.'

Cain looked around Lionel's bedroom and found a hand mirror.

“There’s something on your face, Baron.”

“On my face?”

“Oh my, look again, it’s not a stain, it’s a wrinkle.”

Cain placed a hand mirror directly in Lionel's hand. Lionel's body trembled as he saw the wrinkles around his once-puffy eyes.

“I, I need to take a rest.”

It's not stability, it's drinking blood.

Seeing Lionel acting impatient like a starving animal before food, Cain deliberately acted more relaxed.

“I have told you everything I know, Marquis.”

“I just have a few more questions.”

“Damn, ask them quickly. Ask them all at once instead of one by one!”

Lionel, who was becoming anxious, could not hide his impatient temper.

“Yes, calm down, Baron. Now, where did you make contact with the medium?”

***

“Oh, Ma’am, are you okay? Shouldn’t you rest more?”

“It’s okay. It’s not bad enough to make me sick.”

Cain stopped by the incense shop to check on Judith's condition and to report the results of his investigation.

He looked at Judith, who was guarding the shop with a bandage around her neck and lowered his eyebrows in pity.

“How did the investigation go?”

“Baron Morbius confessed to everything, that he bit off a man’s head and killed him.”

“Did the Baron confess readily?”

“Yes, that’s right. He probably thought that since the targets of his crimes were all civilians, he could avoid a heavy punishment.”

In fact, Lionel's judgment was not wrong. Lionel was a noble, and the victims were all commoners. If they settled for a few gold coins, even if they went to trial, there was a high chance that they would receive a light punishment.

But when the noble Judith steps in, things change.

“Ha, so you’re saying that he knew that if he touched Miss Harrington, things would get worse?”

Erne, who had been listening from the side, chimed in as if he found it ridiculous.

“He said he really wanted to drink Madam’s blood. And then he planned to head straight south.”

Until then, Baron Morbius considered his crimes to be perfect, and he planned to leave the capital immediately after consuming Judith's blood.

“Anyway, the Baron is claiming mutual assault.”

Cain shook his head, saying that he would do anything to get a light punishment.

“He claimed that Madam had split a broom and stabbed him in the side with the sharp end.”

Cain added, looking at Judith with gentle eyes.

“Don’t worry, Ma’am, I don’t believe that.”

"... Yes?"

Judith's eyes shook as if there was an earthquake. Erne, who was watching her, spoke on Judith's behalf.

“No, that is true. The Baron, if nothing else, only spoke the truth.”

“True? Is it really true that Madam...?”

Cain trailed off as if he couldn't believe it.

“Yes, Miss Judith Harrington dug a hole in the Baron’s side.”

“Not to the point of a hole!”

Judith's words, blurted out as if she was being wronged, were tantamount to confirming her fate.

“No, really, Ma’am?”

Cain couldn't believe it.

Looking at Judith, he thought she wasn't a pushover, but it was still hard to believe this.

“Yeah, that’s right.”

Erne fully understood Cain's feelings. When he saw the wound on Lionel's side that night, Erne thought that he had been injured when he was thrown by Gold.

But when he returned to the store, he saw that the broom was split in half and there was blood on the tip.

Judith's actions were obvious, but Erne couldn't believe it. She didn't seem to know how to fight, but she broke a broomstick and attacked her opponent? And even that was a preemptive strike?

It was a great improvisation and he did praise it at first, but...

“Is this considered mutual assault?”

Judith asked cautiously, and Cain answered with a still confused face that he would not do so. Thinking that he should not bother Judith in the future either.

“Even if it was a mutual assault, the probability of Madam being punished is low. It seems that the medium who sold the youth-absorbing elixir to the Baron was a priest.”

A method in which a medium who hides his identity seeks out a suitable noble and introduces him to a priest; a young medium, a wealthy noble, and strange sorcery.

It was difficult not to think of the priest in these four combinations.

'The medium who sold the medicine to the Baron is like a priest?'

Are you saying that everyone who knew the word vampire and cast the contagion spells on me was a priest?

It was not yet certain that the contagion had been a spell, but Judith's mind was in turmoil.

“When giving this potion, the medium instructed that it only absorb the youth of people with brown hair and brown eyes.”

Cain took a small vial out of his pocket.

“I retrieved it from the Baron’s mansion. They say it’s the fountain of youth.”

Cain took back all the medicine from the Baron's house, fearing that the Baron would take the medicine again and suck blood.

As promised, the security force was withdrawn from the townhouse, but the guards outside were left in place to prevent the butler from buying slaves out of false loyalty.

“Could you please find out what kind of medicine it is? I will look into it myself, but I would like to borrow your godmother’s opinion.”

Cain offered the vial to Judith.

“But isn’t this medicine really ominous?”

Judith shook the 'fountain of youth' she had received from Cain.

Even in the warm autumn sunlight, the fountain of youth was pitch black. It was a color that did not really fit with its name, the fountain of youth.

***

As soon as Judith returned to the Rhineland mansion, she offered Beichi the fountain of youth. Beichi was horrified, saying that it was the first time he had seen such an ominous liquid.

He carefully opened the vial to investigate what medicine was in the fountain of youth.

“What is this smell...?”

Judith, curious about the identity of the elixir, followed him into the lab and sniffed.

“It’s Bulran.”

A fragrance similar to coriander.

Judith's eyes grew dim at the unique scent she could never forget.

“Why Bulran?”

Among the many medicinal herbs in the world, was Bulran used?

Even medicines for drowning that is not commonly available on the market contain bulran, and medicines that absorb youth also contain bulran.

Could this coincidence really be a coincidence?

While Judith was lost in thought, Beichi let out a short scream.

“What’s wrong, Mr. Bechi?”

“There are bugs in this medicine.”

“A bug?”

“I don’t know if it was stored incorrectly or if it got into the manufacturing process.”

With a look of disgust on his face, Beichi poured the fountain of youth into a large dish, revealing all the foreign substances inside.

“This is the torso, and this looks like a leg.”

“Mr. Beichi, these transparent things floating around here look like wings, right?”

Ugh. Beichi and Judith looked at the medicine carefully, even though they were disgusted. Something was strange.

Of course, bugs can get into a bottle, but they're in such a mess.

When the dismembered corpse was connected, a complete insect emerged.

“It’s strange that all the pieces are in one bottle, even though bugs can get in and break it during the process of making the medicine.”

Beichi muttered, bending down and examining the wide plate.

“And the cross-section is so clean. Isn’t it strange to see such a clean appearance, Miss Harrington?”
