TCORIYH - Chapter 169

At Saragan's last words, not only Libencia but also the maids standing behind her turned pale.

Libencia was foolish, but she was never a fool. It was obvious what Saragan meant. It meant that Saragan herself would take the position of the second Princess, and their statuses would change completely.

'The situation will change...?'

The small fists of Libencia clenched tightly and trembled. She wanted to beat up Saragan just like that, but the door behind her was open, so it was difficult to do so. She even thought that maybe Saragan had taken that into account and was deliberately scratching her insides. Libencia was so angry that her teeth were grinding.

“If you’re not going in with me, could you please step aside?”

Saragan came up to Libencia's eyes. Her eyes were as shiny as beads that had never been touched by a single speck of dust, and she seemed to be mocking Libencia while also pressuring her. Know your place, and you, who have lost interest in Krald's eyes, cannot dare to look down on me.

"...Try to do well somewhere.”

“Are you encouraging me? I appreciate it too.”

She couldn't stand it any longer. Libencia openly pushed Saragan's shoulder and strode away. Hearing the whispering voices and the laughter behind her, she couldn't stand it any longer.

To be humiliated like this, of all people, myself!

It was something she absolutely couldn't bear.

However, despite her grumbling, the only place Libencia could go was the private room that had been given to her. She passed the pillars with beautiful ceremonial decorations and opened the doors on both sides, pulling out the heavy diamond earrings that were hanging from her ears and throwing them on the floor.

“No, Lady Libencia!”

A maid of the same age as Libencia, who was carrying a vase to change water, suddenly saw an earring rolling towards her feet and screamed in surprise. Libencia threw away the other earring as well and threw herself on the sofa, crying bitterly.

“What’s wrong, Lady Libencia? What happened to you?”

The maid asked again, but Libencia did not answer and instead slammed the sofa down and groaned. Then as if she had lost her temper, she grabbed the armrests and shook them roughly.

“Anne Mille, this is so disgusting! I have to go back to the capital!”

Libencia screamed. Then the maid, who had been looking dumbfounded, flinched and stepped back. She was the same Anne Mille who had previously served Flavia.

***

There were quite a few circumstances before Anne Mille came to the South to become Libencia's maid.

On the day that Flavia's father, Count Bloset, tried to kidnap Judith by sending men to kill her, Anne Mille sensed more than anyone that Flavia and the Count's family would be completely ruined, and she ran away early. If Flavia was taken away for the crime of trying to harm the Crown Princess, it would be impossible for Flavua to not reveal that Anne Mille had procured medicine for her and tried to harm Judith.

If Flavia had really mentioned Anne Mille's name, then Anne Mille herself, who had run away, would have certainly been ruined, as would her family of humble origin. Fortunately, however, Flavia did not have enough sanity left to denounce Anne Mille's wrongdoings.

No one knew what had happened to Flavia, who had been screaming incomprehensible the whole time she was dragged to the tower after she was confined, and no one was interested in where the maid who had always followed the second Princess around and served her had disappeared. Anne Mille had never been more grateful for Flavia's dullness than at that moment.

Anne Mille, who had been hiding near the capital and keeping an eye out, took advantage of the quiet to go straight to her parents' estate. She had an older brother and three younger siblings who were not yet adults, so she was not given a warm welcome.

Her parents, who had secretly hoped that their daughter would marry one of the capital's nobles and help their poor family, were clearly disappointed. Perhaps because of this disappointment, they seemed to criticize Flavia's wrongdoings even more fiercely.

Because of this, Anne Mille could not honestly say what she had done. She had only been eating the food of the people for a day or two, and above all, she had become accustomed to the luxurious and colorful life in the capital and the palace, so she could not like the boring days of her country estate.

Anne Mille had not even lived two months when one night she stole a few of her remaining treasures and left the castle with them as travel expenses. She thought about selling them and starting a small business somewhere, or going back to the capital and looking for a job among noble families who did not know her... While wandering around with such thoughts, she encountered a robber.

It was obvious what would happen if she met a robber in the middle of the street where no one was passing by. Just as she was about to lie down flat, thinking that she had to save her life even if she had to lose everything she had, she suddenly saw a carriage approaching. At the moment when the robbers were bewildered by the unexpected event, Anne Mille pushed them away with all her might and jumped in front of the carriage.

“Please save me! Those people! Those people took all my stuff! They tried to kill me!”

The coachman, who almost hit Anne Mille, was surprised and had no time to fall over, but was met with an even more shocking surprise. He was momentarily taken aback, but the robbers seemed to think they had met well, and they all rushed toward the carriage. At that moment, the carriage door opened, men with fierce expressions jumped out, and in an instant, they cut off the robbers’ heads.

“Young lady, you must be in a bad situation if you go down this road alone. Are you hurt anywhere?”

Anne Mille was watching the men carelessly throw the bodies of the robbers into the bushes when someone spoke to her. It seemed like the master of the men who had dealt with the robbers was the Count of Montfort, the father of Libencia. Anne Mille happened to be there by chance on her way back from meeting a friend who lived quite far from the capital.

Anne Mille thought this was a new opportunity as she rode in his carriage to the capital. The Count and Countess of Montfort did not know Anne Mille’s face, so she deliberately did not reveal her identity. Anne Mille, who became the maid of the Countess of Montfort, tried her best to please her and was able to hear everything that was happening at the palace.

While serving the Countess, Anne Mille learned that the Count and his wife held a considerable grudge against Queen Gilsis. It was because of her opposition that Libencia was not able to become the Crown Princess, and she was still regarded as a woman taken in by the Prince, without any power as a government official.

The Count of Montfort was also in frequent contact with the nobles whom the Duke of Laetian had favored, and from overhearing their conversations she learned that a significant number of the capital's nobles had effectively turned their backs on the Queen and the Duke of Laetian.

In the meantime, Krald suddenly received the title of Grand Duke and was appointed to the Southern Margrave. The Count of Montfort was worried about his only daughter going so far away, but he could not give up Krald now. So he called Anne Mille and said this.

“I already know that you were the second Princess’s maid.”

“Your Grace, I...”

“You can’t say I didn’t know anything when the second Princess did something so shameless, can you? Do you realize that if I were to report you now, neither you nor your family would be safe?”

Anne Mille, who was deeply embarrassed, collapsed on the spot. How could she have achieved this peace of mind today, only to have it disappear so vainly?

She could not accept it. She even thought of killing the Count de Montfort, who was acting so solemnly, which was not befitting of him. Then the Count continued.

“There is only one way for you to live now.”

“...”

“As you know, my daughter is going south with Krald. I will appoint you as her maid, so you should go with her. And you should report to me regularly about what is going on there. I know you have that much insight and intelligence, so don’t even think about using tricks. Remember. Depending on what you do, your future and that of your family will change.”

Anne Mille thought it was ridiculous and thought that neither Libencia nor Krald would know her face, but Count de Montfort did not listen to her. He did not care if Krald remembered Anne Mille's face and she was in danger.

After Krald, who had become the Grand Duke, left for the south ahead of the long procession, Anne Mille met with Libencia for the first time in a long time. When she had been serving Flavia, she had wished she could go somewhere and die, but now that her life was in the hands of the Count of Montfort, she had no choice but to lie flat on her face.

“You’re the new maid that my father hired? Hmm... I’ve seen your face somewhere. Were you in the palace?”

Libencia didn't recognize Anne Mille's face. She even looked down on Flavia, who was the princess, so there was no way she could remember the maid next to her.

Anne Mille was lucky.

***

So Anne Mille was now the maid of Libencia Montfort, from Flavia's maid. She faithfully carried out the work that Count Montfort ordered her to do, and did not do anything that could be blamed on Libencia, who had a temperamental temperament. She was cunning and quick-witted, so it was not difficult for her to please the unruly and spoiled Libencia if she wanted to.

“Lady Libencia, calm down. Your makeup is all ruined.”

“Who cares whether it’s broken or not? His Highness doesn’t care about me anymore anyway! You don’t know how much time passes when he's with that woman! Do you say such things knowing that?”

“But what if you just keep crying like this? If you do this, the Count and his wife in the capital will be worried.”

“Yes, I don’t need any more. I’m going to the capital.”

Libencia stood up, shaking off Anne Mille's hand. She was the type of person who had to do whatever she set her mind to, so she might have told her to just pull the carriage out like this. Anne Mille thought she had to stop that, so she held onto Libencia's ankle and held her back.

“What are you doing! Let go of this!”

“Miss Libencia, please listen to me for a moment.”
