HFMD - Chapter 54 < Two Sense Of Foreboding >

“For our king, Baynas!”

“For Venice!”

The servants, screaming madly and wielding sharp shards of glass, rushed towards the nobles.

“Whoa!”

The banquet hall, which had been filled with laughter, turned into a scene of chaos in an instant. The musical instruments that had been playing sweet sounds just moments ago were now rolling and breaking on the floor, adding to the eerieness.

“Sylvia!”

Randall was about to run towards Sylvia as soon as the commotion broke out. However, as he was making his way through the crowd, he saw a servant rushing towards Count Florette and his wife. He gritted his teeth and snapped the servant’s arm as he was aiming at the couple. There was a cracking sound and the servant screamed.

“Oh. It’s a dark bug.”

Meanwhile, David clicked his tongue and stretched out his hand when he saw the servant rushing at him from behind. As it was a royal banquet, weapons were prohibited except for the knights on guard, so for now he had no choice but to fight with his bare hands. David grabbed the woman's wrist, causing the glass shards to fall, and twisted her arm and pushed her away.

“Ahh!”

With a loud crash, the female servant was thrown far away. David shook his hand lightly and glanced around at the chaotic surroundings.

'A dark bug? Could it be that the current Demon King's name is Baynas...?'

Sylvia frowned at the unexpected situation. The surroundings were a complete mess. The nobles without weapons were desperately trying to block the dark bugs with their bare hands, and the knights who were armed were struggling with their numerical inferiority. At this point, it was a situation where one-third of the servants in the banquet hall were dark bugs.

'Where is Auston?'

Sylvia looked for wizards, including Auston. They said they couldn't bring weapons, but they couldn't stop magic. Besides, no one wanted to put a restraint on a wizard and then fight them off. Even if they were the King. So it was obvious that the court wizards had been invited to the birthday party.

For some reason, the court wizards were nowhere to be seen, and Auston was shouting frantically on the other side of the banquet hall, protecting the people. It seemed that he didn't have time to leisurely prepare to cast area-of-effect magic because it was a melee.

At first glance, she thought she saw Rubia next to him. Sylvia bit her lip nervously, not knowing whether to be happy that she was in danger or sorry that Randall and her parents were caught up in a dangerous situation.

At that moment, David shook off another dark bug that was approaching him and pulled Sylvia under his cloak as if embracing her.

“It’s dangerous, so stay close.”

"What..."

Sylvia looked up at him in embarrassment as she was suddenly pressed up against David. And at that moment, David, whose eyes met someone's, smiled bitterly. Sylvia unconsciously turned her head to follow his gaze at that malicious smile. Then, she saw Randall gritting his teeth with a face that looked like he was about to jump out from beyond the crowd.

Behind him, the knights leading him were protecting some nobles, including Count Florette and his wife. Randall glared at David for a moment and then tried to look at Sylvia. However, his gaze quickly turned away as the dark bug pounced on him again.

'You did that on purpose.'

At that smile, Sylvia realized it was like lightning. David had obviously intentionally pulled her into a hug a moment ago. And he showed that to Randall. It was only to hurt Randall.

'You dare.'

The moment she realized that Sylvia’s face turned cold. Magical energy surged around her for a moment, and then the banquet hall shook with a heavy thud.

“What, what is it!”

“Eww!”

People, dark bugs and nobles alike, hurriedly tried to regain their balance. The battle was briefly in a lull. Randall realized that the path between him and Sylvia had been momentarily empty, and he immediately kicked the ground. Up to that point, it was as Sylvia had intended. To open the way for Randall to run here. However, the hand that gripped her chin viciously was something she had not expected. She reflexively grimaced and groaned.

“Ugh.”

“What did you just say?”

A large hand gripped her jaw so tightly that it seemed as if it would break it.

David grabbed Sylvia's chin with one hand and pulled her face close to meet his eyes. His golden eyes searched her closely as if searching for something, just like a madman's.

“Just now, clearly... that was...”

David muttered like a madman and pulled his hand closer. For a moment, Sylvia was overwhelmed by the momentum and couldn’t even think of resisting. She just stared at him with purple eyes. A dark, deep purple that seemed to have a smell.

'Those eyes...'

The moment she, frozen without even breathing, realizes the identity of familiarity.

“Where the hell do you dare put your hands...!”

She thought she heard a voice like the growl of a wild beast, and then the strength that had been clenching her jaw disappeared in an instant. Then, with a dull thud, she saw David’s body fall far away like a dark bug.

“Sylvia. Are you okay? There’s a bruise on your chin...”

Randall mercilessly pushed David away and hurriedly looked at Sylvia. He was fidgeting, but he couldn’t touch Sylvia’s body, fearing that he might lose control of his strength, so he just distorted his face.

"Ah."

Only after seeing her face reflected in Randall's eyes did Sylvia realize that her jaw was bruised and she unconsciously tried to put her hand on it. However, Randall was startled and lightly grabbed her hand.

“You must not touch it.”

Sylvia was able to calm down only after feeling the familiar warmth warming her hand. Later, she felt pain all over her body, including her jaw. It seemed to be because she was surprised by the sudden situation.

Somehow, that fact made her laugh, so Sylvia smiled quietly and interlocked her hands.

“...That’s right. It hurts even when I just sit still, but it would hurt even more if I touched it.”

Randall froze in shock at the tickling sensation between his fingers. While a series of events were unfolding, the noise in the banquet hall had somewhat subsided. From afar, Auston came running after clearing away the dark bugs.

“Master, Madam! Are you all right? Ouch, there’s a bruise on your face, Madam!”

Auston was horrified when he saw Sylvia's face. Only then did Randall realize that he had thrown David and blocked Sylvia's path. It was understandable, since David, who had strong pride, could not have stayed still after being pushed by Randall.

Of course, David was the one who had treated Sylvia rudely at first, but once he set his eyes on her, he didn't care at all. However, contrary to Randall's expectations, David was lying on the floor in a sloppy position, still staring at Sylvia.

“Your Highness, are you alright?”

It wasn't until a knight discovered David had fallen and ran over to ask for help that he finally came to his senses.

“...I'm fine.”

David then realized that he was in an unseemly posture and twisted his lips in disgust as he stood up. As he was straightening his appearance, the knights of the guard and the court magicians came rushing into the banquet hall.

"Your Highness!"

“Is everyone alright! It’s been a while since I heard the news, as it wasn’t an attack through the darkness!”

“And outside too... !”

“Outside? What’s going on?”

At the words of a court magician, the King, who was staggering on his throne, glared fiercely. The magician who had spoken to him hurriedly lowered his head and parted his lips.

“That... similar incidents occurred not only here but also throughout the palace, killing several servants. Fortunately, the others only suffered minor injuries...”

At those words, the air in the banquet hall became chilly. The fact that the dark bugs were acting so brazenly in the middle of the capital, and in the royal palace at that. It felt like a signal flare announcing the start of some great war.

***

Meanwhile, just before the dark bugs caused a commotion in the banquet hall.

“Mr. Dosler, me and...”

“Haha, yeah. Let’s talk about that next time. I’m a little busy right now.”

Auston slowly moved toward a corner seat, trying hard to hide his rotting face. As soon as he turned his back on the people, he scrunched up his face and clicked his tongue.

'The Nobles who are worse than bats. When they treat you so poorly, how can their attitude change so much just because Belfort is behind them? That's why I didn't want to come to the capital.'

After Auston settled in the Belfort Duke’s household, the attitudes of the people toward him had changed noticeably. It was so funny. That’s why he didn’t want to come to the capital... but since he was just Randall’s aide and didn’t know what would happen if he didn’t attend, he had no choice but to come along. It was fortunate that these events only involved attending the King’s birthday and the foundation of the nation’s foundation, otherwise, he would have died suddenly from stress a long time ago.

Auston looked for a corner to avoid the nobles who were clinging to him, putting aside his pride. He found Rubia, who, like him, seemed to be leaning against a dark spot, trying to avoid people, and sighed, covering her eyes with her hand.

“Oh my god. This is truly the time of the Auston Dosler ordeal.”

“Don’t react like that when you see someone.”

“Were you a human?”

“They say that what you see is what you get, and this is exactly what you’re talking about, Dosler.”

"I beg your pardon?"

The last time they cooperated because of the scandal about Sylvia, their relationship was back to being like a dog and a cat, nothing more or less. They had lived together for so long hating each other, so their relationship couldn't improve right away just because they had collaborated once.

Auston let out an exaggerated sigh and muttered softly.

“I guess I should stay by your side, Madam. You have a talent for killing people with your eyes.”

Sylvia was mostly expressionless, and even when she smiled occasionally, she had an air that made it hard for people to approach her. Perhaps she was a magician of great skill, and she secretly exuded the majesty of a predator!

That was what the savage Auston thought. Rubia's eyebrows twitched uncomfortably as she heard that muttering. She glanced at the back of Auston's head, who was leaning over the pillar to see where Sylvia was, and began to speak suspiciously.

“By the way, you. I’ve heard rumors that you’ve been following the Duchess around like crazy lately... No way, the Duchess.”

“What the hell are you talking about!”

Auston jumped immediately when he realized that her words meant, 'Do you really like the Duchess?'

The moment he saw that reaction, Rubia felt uncomfortable feeling slightly relieved, and she was embarrassed herself.

'What?'

Rubia placed her hand on her chest and took a deep breath, as her heart was beating at an odd rhythm. Fortunately, her heartbeat returned to normal shortly after.

'Was it because I was so angry that I thought that kind of person liked the Duchess?'

Rubia tilted her head in puzzlement. Meanwhile, Auston was venting his anger.

“Who the hell is spreading such rumors! Do you have anything to kill? My Lord  still have to pay my salary!”

‘...Yes. This is that person.’

Seeing him take the money first even in a life-threatening situation, it seemed like the little bit of resentment she had against him was quickly gone. Rubia, who was about to spout out sharp words as usual, stopped when she noticed something. Her purple eyes opened wide. Auston, who was preoccupied with protesting his innocence, didn’t notice it.

“Tell me what’s really on your mind! Could it be that guy you were talking about at the Countess’s party last time...?”

“Damage!”

And then, right after that, Rubia grabbed Auston by the collar and pulled him towards her. Their bodies suddenly overlapped. Auston's eyes widened in surprise.
